Selective guest inclusion by crystals of calixarenes: potential for application as separation materials

Self-Assembling Systems Based on Pillar[5]arenes and Surfactants for Encapsulation of Diagnostic Dye DAPI

In this paper, we report the development of the novel self-assembling systems based on oppositely charged Pillar[5]arenes and surfactants for encapsulation of diagnostic dye DAPI. For this purpose, the aggregation behavior of synthesized macrocycles and surfactants in the presence of Pillar[5]arenes functionalized by carboxy and ammonium terminal groups was studied. It has been demonstrated that by varying the molar ratio in Pillar[5]arene-surfactant systems, it is possible to obtain various types of supramolecular systems: host-guest complexes at equimolar ratio of Pillar[5]arene-surfactant and interpolyelectrolyte complexes (IPECs) are self-assembled materials formed in aqueous medium by two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (macrocycle and surfactant micelles). It has been suggested that interaction of Pillar[5]arenes with surfactants is predominantly driven by cooperative electrostatic interactions. Synthesized stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric IPECs specifically interact with DAPI. UV-vis, luminescent spectroscopy and molecular docking data show the structural feature of dye-loaded IPEC and key role of the electrostatic, π-π-stacking, cation-π interactions in their formation. Such a strategy for the design of supramolecular Pillar[5]arene-surfactant systems will lead to a synergistic interaction of the two components and will allow specific interaction with the third component (drug or fluorescent tag), which will certainly be in demand in pharmaceuticals and biomedical diagnostics.

Inclusion of Amine Isomers with Open-Chain Hosts Having a Partial Structure of p-tert-Butylthiacalixarene

Porous materials, which can capture a specific compound from a hard-to-separate molecular mixture, are strongly desired for practical separation and purification processes. Aiming to develop such materials, we have investigated the performance of our original host compounds, [3,3'-thiobis(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzene)-1,1'-diyl]diacetic acid (2) and its monopropyl ester (3), in discriminating among regio- or stereoisomers of three groups of amines, 2-, 3-, and 4-methylpyridine, 2-, 6-, and 8-methylquinoline, and cis- and trans-4-cyclohexanamine. Diacid 2 selectively included 4-methylpyridine in hexane and 3-methylpyridine in toluene in competitive inclusion among the three regioisomers. Mechanistic studies revealed that the inclusions of 3- and 4-methylpyridine are favored under kinetic and thermodynamic control, respectively. Solvent-dependent switching in guest selectivity was also observed in competitive inclusion among the methylquinoline isomers with diacid 2, whereas trans-4-methylcyclohexanamine was selectively included over the cis-isomer by monoester 3, as well as diacid 2, regardless of the solvent employed. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the resulting inclusion crystals suggests that the wide guest scope of the host compounds originates from their flexible ability to form complexes with amines.

Recent progress to construct calixarene-based polymers using covalent bonds: synthesis and applications

The combination of supramolecular chemistry and polymer sciences creates a great possibility to afford calixarene-based polymers offering unique features and applications. The enhancement of calixarene's versatility in this manner has made chemists better able to achieve different objectives in host-guest chemistry. The calixarene-based polymers can be divided into covalent polymers and supramolecular polymers regarding the interactions. Although there are several studies available on the calixarene-based supramolecular polymers, there is a paucity of studies on the calixarene-based covalent polymers. In this paper, the most recent developments and applications of the calixarene-based covalent polymers in the last two decades have been reviewed. We have particularly focused on the polymers, including those where the calixarene molecules have been used as macromonomers and polymerize through covalent bonds. Moreover, covalent polymers or solid supports functionalized with calixarenes are highlighted as well.

Synthetic Macrocycle-Based Nonporous Adaptive Crystals for Molecular Separation

The exploitation of new materials for adsorptive separation of industrially important hydrocarbons is of great importance in both scientific research and petrochemical industry. Nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) as a robust class of synthetic materials have drawn much attention during the past five years for their superior performance in adsorption and separation. Pillararenes are the main family of macrocyclic arenes used for NACs construction, where the structure-function relationship has been intensively studied. In the past two years, some emerging types of synthetic macrocyclic arenes have been successfully brought into this research field, showing the gradual enrichment and diversification of NACs materials. This Minireview summarizes the recent advances of synthetic macrocycle-based NACs, which are categorized by various practical applications in molecular separation. Besides, NACs-based vapochromic supramolecular systems are also discussed. Finally, future perspectives and challenges of NACs are given. We envisage that this Minireview will be a useful and timely reference for those who are interested in new molecular and supramolecular crystals for storage and separation applications.

Smart Molecular Recognition: From Key-to-Lock Principle to Memory-Based Selectivity

The formation and decomposition of inclusion compounds with a solid-solid phase transition may be very selective to the guest molecular structure. This selectivity may function in essentially different ways than defined by the classical concept of molecular recognition, which implies the preferential binding of complementary molecules. Solid inclusion compounds may take part as an initial or/and final state in several processes of different types summarized in this review, which selectivity is boosted by cooperativity of participating molecular crystals. Some of these processes resemble switching electronic devices and can be called smart giving practically absolute molecular recognition.

Smart control of calixarene polymorphic states

Solid calixarene is switched to the stable and metastable polymorphs by exposure to guest vapors in binary and ternary systems.

Studies on the constituents of Helleborus purpurascens: use of derivatives from calix[6]arene, homooxacalix[3]arene and homoazacalix[3]arene as extractant agents for amino acids from the aqueous extract

The task of this work was to investigate the extraction capacity of various calixarenes for free and esterified amino acids from aqueous acid phases. Furthermore, this method was applied to aqueous extracts of Helleborus purpurascens. Generally, it is known that calixarenes can be used as extractants for ammonium compounds due to π-cation and lone pair cation interactions. As first, tert-Butyl-calix[6]arene and derivatives thereof were used. They had already proven their worth in previous investigations. In addition, tert-Butyl-hexahomooxa-calix[3]arene was used also, which can also enter into lone pair cation interactions. In addition to these well-known calixarenes, new calixarenes were produced and tested. Based on the tert-Butyl-hexahomooxa-calix[3]arene, a phosphor(III)bridged derivative was prepared, combining the three aromatic hydroxyl groups to a phosphite. As a seldom-described class of calixarenes, tert-Butyl-hexahomoaza-calix[3]arene derivatives were used. The nitrogen analogues of tert-Butyl-hexahomooxa-calix[3]arene could be produced as N-benzyl derivatives. The structure of the esterified carboxymethylated derivative of N,N',N″-Tribenzyl-tert-Butyl-hexahomoaza-calix[3]arene could be verified by X-ray structure analysis. It crystallized as a partial cone. The extraction capacity of the described calixarenes was investigated for amino acids from aqueous acidic solutions into an organic phase. For the testing were chosen asparagine, aspartic acid, tyrosine, tryptophane, phenylalanine and pipecolinic acid and their methyl esters. The amino acids and their methyl esters were dissolved in water at different pH values. The calixarenes were dissolved in dichloromethane (DCM) or chloroform. After this preparation, the aqueous acidic amino acid solutions were mixed with the solutions and shaken intensively. In addition, blank values were determined by extracting the aqueous stock solutions of the amino acids and their methyl esters with pure solvents. To determine the extraction rate, the phases were separated and each analysed using GC-FID, partially GC-MS(EI). The evaluation is performed in two ways. On the one hand the depletion in the aqueous phase and on the other hand the content in the organic phase was determined.

Smart control of guest inclusion by α-cyclodextrin using its hydration history

Hydration history was found to control the inclusion capacity of α-cyclodextrin (aCD) for volatile organic guests, so that its level may be switched from zero to the stoichiometric value and back by the variation of aCD hydration/dehydration order and direction. Such variation of the inclusion capacity is caused by the balance of two water roles: the activation of guest inclusion and guest/water competition. These observed concurrent roles and the cooperativity of guest inclusion and hydration make possible the smart tuning of the guest inclusion by the subtle change of preparation procedure. Depending on the hydration history, aCD was shown to form hydrates with the same water contents but different packing types and different kinetics of dehydration, which correlates with their different inclusion capacities for organic guests. This correlation reveals how the “high-energy” and “low-energy” water works in the guest inclusion by aCD, which may be relevant for other cyclodextrins and hydrophilic receptors of biomimetic and biological natures. The results can help to rationalize the technologies of producing various inclusion compounds of cyclodextrins.

Using fast scanning calorimetry to detect guest-induced polymorphism by irreversible phase transitions in the nanogram scale

Fast scanning calorimetry with a heating rate of 1000 K s⁻¹ enables successful screening of polymorphs for separate microcrystalline aggregates in thiacalixarene powder.

Synthetic Evolution of the Multifarene Cavity from Planar Predecessors

The stepwise evolution of curved multifarene structures from planar precursors is demonstrated, highlighting three architectural design elements: 1) employment of various aromatic units, 2) changing the hybridization of the linking atoms from sp² to sp³ , and 3) rigidification of the system by the introduction of five-membered rings. Similar design elements have been employed to transform graphene sheets into curved carbon structures. Specifically, the stepwise synthetic evolution of multifarene[2+2], which has a curved, quite rigid structure, begins with a planar, tetraimine precursor, conversion to pairs of vicinal diamines, and the transformation of these pairs to cyclic thiourea groups. This process was probed by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Since varying the carbonylation conditions resulted in carbamates or thiocarbamates rather than the urea or thiourea isomers, the isomeric interconversion was studied both experimentally and by DFT computations. The carbamate versus urea preference was found to reflect either kinetic or thermodynamic control, respectively.
