Creep induced rate effects on radial cracks in multilayered structures

Load-bearing capacity of lithium disilicate and ultra-translucent zirconias

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the load-bearing capacity of monolithic lithium disilicate (LiDi - IPS e.max CAD) and novel ultra-translucent zirconia restorative systems of various compositions: 5Y-PSZ (5 mol% yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia) and 4Y-PSZ (4 mol% yttria-partially-stabilized zirconia); relative to a 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia) control.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Experiments were carried out with 10 disc specimens (Ø12 ×1 mm) per ceramic material. The zirconia intaglio surface (as machined) was sandblasted (50 µm Al₂O₃ at 2 bar), while LiDi was etched with 5% HF for 20 s. The ceramic discs were then adhesively bonded onto a dentin-like substrate (G10, a high-pressure fiberglass material) using Multilink Automix cement and Monobond Plus primer, producing a ceramic/cement/dentin-like substrate trilayer structure. The bonded specimens were stored in water for 3 days at 37 °C prior to a Hertzian indentation flexural radial fracture test. The plate-on-foundation theory was used to validate the load-bearing capacity of the trilayer systems based on the flexural tensile stress at the ceramic intaglio (cementation) surface-a cause for bulk fracture of ceramic onlays.

RESULTS

The experiment data showed that, when bonded to and supported by a dentin-like substrate, the load-bearing capacity of LiDi (872 N) is superior to the 5Y-PSZ (715 N) and can even reach that of 4Y-PSZ (864 N), while 3Y-TZP still holds the highest load-bearing capacity (1195 N). Theoretical analyses agree with experimental observations. The translucency of 5Y-PSZ approaches that of LiDi, which are superior to both 4Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP.

CONCLUSIONS

When adhesively bonded to and supported by dentin, lithium disilicate exhibits similar load-bearing properties to 4Y-PSZ but much better than 5Y-PSZ.

COHESIVE FINITE ELEMENT SIMULATIONS OF CONTRACTION AND SHAPE EFFECTS ON CELL DE-ADHESION

Cohesive-interface-based finite element simulations were conducted to investigate the critical shear stress required for cell de-adhesion from extracellular substrates. The interface ligand–receptor bonds are modeled by a cohesive interface model with initial stiffness, interface strength, and fracture energy as the governing parameters. The ratio of the cell modulus to the interface stiffness defines a length scale. If this length is much less than the contact size, the de-adhesion process can be modeled by the linear elastic fracture mechanics, while the opposite limit leads to the concurrent sliding of the cell or, equivalently, debonding of all the interface ligand–receptor pairs. Since it generates additional shear-stress concentration along the interface, cell contraction generally reduces the critical de-adhesion stress. Cell de-adhesion is more prone to take place for three-dimensional irregular cell shapes because of the much easier failure in the anti-plane Mode III shear, as well as the additional stress concentration in these geometric irregularities.

Bio-inspired dental multilayers: effects of layer architecture on the contact-induced deformation

The ceramic crown structures under occlusal contact are idealized as flat multilayered structures that are deformed under Hertzian contact loading. Those multilayers consist of a crown-like ceramic top layer, an adhesive layer and the dentin-like substrate. Bio-inspired design of the adhesive layer proposed functionally graded multilayers (FGM) that mimic the dentin-enamel junction in natural teeth. This paper examines the effects of FGM layer architecture on the contact-induced deformation of bio-inspired dental multilayers. Finite element modeling was used to explore the effects of thickness and architecture on the contact-induced stresses that are induced in bio-inspired dental multilayers. A layered nanocomposite structure was then fabricated by the sequential rolling of micro-scale nanocomposite materials with local moduli that increase from the side near the soft dentin-like polymer composite foundation to the side near the top ceramic layer. The loading rate dependence of the critical failure loads is shown to be well predicted by a slow crack growth model, which integrates the actual mechanical properties that are obtained from nanoindentation experiments.

Competition of fracture mechanisms in monolithic dental ceramics: flat model systems

Monolithic (single layer) glass-ceramic restorations often fail from chipping and fracture. Using blunt indentation of a model flat porcelain-like brittle layer bonded onto a dentin-like polymer support system, a variety of fatigue fracture modes has been identified and analyzed: outer cone, inner cone, and median cracks developing in the near-contact region at the occlusal surface; radial cracks developing at the internal cementation surface along the loading axis. Our findings indicate that monolithic glass-ceramic layers are vulnerable to both occlusal surface damage and cementation internal surface fracture. Clinical issues in the longevity of ceramic restorations are discussed in relation to biting force, physical properties of ceramic crowns and luting cement, and thicknesses of ceramic and cement layers.

Bio-inspired design of dental multilayers: experiments and model

This paper combines experiments, simulations and analytical modeling that are inspired by the stress reductions associated with the functionally graded structures of the dentin-enamel-junctions (DEJs) in natural teeth. Unlike conventional crown structures in which ceramic crowns are bonded to the bottom layer with an adhesive layer, real teeth do not have a distinct "adhesive layer" between the enamel and the dentin layers. Instead, there is a graded transition from enamel to dentin within a approximately 10 to 100 microm thick regime that is called the Dentin Enamel Junction (DEJ). In this paper, a micro-scale, bio-inspired functionally graded structure is used to bond the top ceramic layer (zirconia) to a dentin-like ceramic-filled polymer substrate. The bio-inspired functionally graded material (FGM) is shown to exhibit higher critical loads over a wide range of loading rates. The measured critical loads are predicted using a rate dependent slow crack growth (RDEASCG) model. The implications of the results are then discussed for the design of bio-inspired dental multilayers.

Modeling of water absorption induced cracks in resin-based composite supported ceramic layer structures

Cracking patterns in the top ceramic layers of the modeled dental multilayers with polymer foundation are observed when they are immersed in water. This article developed a model to understand this cracking mechanism. When water diffuses into the polymer foundation of dental restorations, the foundation will expand; as a result, the stress will build up in the top ceramic layer because of the bending and stretching. A finite element model based on this mechanism is built to predict the stress build-up and the slow crack growth in the top ceramic layers during the water absorption. Our simulations show that the stress build-up by this mechanism is high enough to cause the cracking in the top ceramic layers and the cracking patterns predicted by our model are well consistent with those observed in experiments on glass/epoxy/polymer multilayers. The model is then used to discuss the life prediction of different dental ceramics.
