Fluoridated hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanocomposite coating fabricated by a modified electrochemical deposition

Native Osseous CaP Biomineral Coating on a Biomimetic Multi-Spiked Connecting Scaffold Prototype for Cementless Resurfacing Arthroplasty Achieved by Combined Electrochemical Deposition

The multi-spiked connecting scaffold (MSC-Scaffold) prototype with spikes mimicking the interdigitations of articular subchondral bone is an essential innovation in surgically initiated fixation of resurfacing arthroplasty (RA) endoprosthesis components. This paper aimed to present a determination of the suitable range of conditions for the calcium phosphate (CaP) potentiostatic electrochemical deposition (ECD_V=const) on the MSC-Scaffold prototype spikes to achieve a biomineral coating with a native Ca/P ratio. The CaP ECD_V=const process on the MSC-Scaffold Ti4Al6V pre-prototypes was investigated for potential V_ECDfrom −9 to −3 V, and followed by 48 h immersion in a simulated body fluid. An acid–alkaline pretreatment (AAT) was applied for a portion of the pre-prototypes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of deposited coatings together with coatings weight measurements were performed. Themost suitable V_ECD range, from −5.25 to −4.75 V, was determined as the native biomineral Ca/P ratio of coatings was achieved. AAT increases the weight of deposited coatings (44% for V_ECD = −5.25 V, 9% for V_ECD = −5.00 V and 15% for V_ECD = −4.75 V) and the coverage degree of the lateral spike surfaces (40% for V_ECD = −5.25 V, 14% for V_ECD = −5.00 V and 100% for V_ECD = −4.75 V). XRD confirmed that the multiphasic CaP coating containing crystalline octacalcium phosphate is produced on the lateral surface of the spikes of the MSC-Scaffold. ECD_V=const preceded by AAT prevents micro-cracks on the bone-contacting surfaces of the MSC-Scaffold prototype, increases its spikes’ lateral surface coverage, and results in the best modification effect at V_ECD = −5.00 V. To conclude, the biomimetic MSC-Scaffold prototype with desired biomineral coating of native Ca/P ratio was obtained for cementless RA endoprostheses.

Remineralization and repair of enamel surface by biomimetic Zn-carbonate hydroxyapatite containing toothpaste: a comparative in vivo study

Consumption of acidic foods and drinks and other factors that cause enamel wear are responsible for the daily enamel loss and degradation. Use of some toothpastes that have been showed to possess different properties of remineralisation and/or repair of the enamel surface may help to protect tooth enamel. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of toothpaste containing Zn-carbonate hydroxyapatite (CHA) nanostructured microcrystals may exert remineralization/repair effects of the enamel surface. Two groups of patients, aged between 18 and 75 years, used a Zn-CHA nanocrystals-based toothpaste (experimental group) and a potassium nitrate/sodium fluoride toothpaste (active control group) for 8 weeks. At the end of this period, extractions were performed in five subjects per study group. Negative controls consisted of two subjects treated with non-specified fluoride toothpaste. Teeth were processed for morphological and chemical-physic superficial characterizations by means of Scanning Electronic Microscopy with Elementary analysis, X-Ray Diffraction analysis and Infrared analysis. In this study, the use of a Zn-CHA nanocrystals toothpaste led to a remineralization/repair of the enamel surface, by deposition of a hydroxyapatite-rich coating. On the other hand, the use of both a nitrate potassium/sodium fluoride and non-specified fluoride toothpastes did not appreciably change the enamel surface. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the toothpaste containing Zn-CHA nanostructured microcrystals, differently from nitrate potassium/sodium fluoride and non-specified fluoride toothpastes, may promote enamel superficial repair by means of the formation of a protective biomimetic CHA coating.

Preparation and properties of composite MAO/ECD coatings on magnesium alloy

Magnesium alloys are potential biodegradable implants because of their outstanding biological performance and biodegradability in the bioenvironment. However, the rapid corrosion of magnesium and its alloys in human body fluids or blood plasma limits their clinical application. In the present work, we first fabricated porous micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings containing Ca/P on the magnesium alloy substrate by conducting MAO in the electrolyte containing calcium gluconate. Subsequently, hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings were prepared using electrochemical deposition (ECD) on the MAO coatings. Finally, a MAO/ECD composite coating was successfully fabricated on the magnesium alloy. The phase, morphology and composition of the biological coatings were monitored with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and corrosion resistance was evaluated by means of electrochemical methods in a simulated body fluid. The experimental results indicated that the formation of HA-containing composite coatings on magnesium alloy effectively decreases its corrosion rate and more importantly endows it with a potential bioactivity. We believe that the combined use of MAO and ECD to modify magnesium alloys would make them more attractive for clinical applications.
