The Calculation of Discrepancy Scores in the Context of Biased Self-Perceptions of Acceptance

The Perspective Matters: A Multi-informant Study on the Relationship Between Social-Emotional Competence and Preschoolers' Externalizing and Internalizing Symptoms

Recent research demands a multi-informant and multi-factorial assessment of preschool-age psychopathology. Based on a tripartite model, we tested the relationship between emotional and social competence and their contribution to externalizing and internalizing symptoms in a preschool-age community sample (N = 117, M = 4.67 years, SD = 2.75 months). We assessed teachers' (N = 109) and parents' (N = 77) perspective using the Strengths-and-Difficulties-Questionnaire and children's perspective using the Berkeley-Puppet-Interview and a standardized emotional-competence-test (MeKKi). We found externalizing symptoms being negatively related to prosocial behavior in teachers' and parents' reports and positively related to social initiative in teachers' reports. In teachers' reports only, a mediation effect of emotional competence via social competence on externalizing symptoms was shown. Children, but not caregivers, reported internalizing symptoms being positively related to prosocial behavior. These results highlight the importance of multiple informants and especially of children's self-perception in preschool-age psychopathology.

Biased self-perceived social competence and engagement in subtypes of aggression: Examination of peer rejection, social dominance goals, and sex of the child as moderators

This study expands on prior research suggesting that children who either over- or under-estimate their social competence relative to others' reports are more likely to be aggressive. Linear and curvilinear associations between biased social self-perceptions and forms (physical vs. relational) and functions (proactive vs. reactive) of aggression were tested along with three moderators (peer rejection, social dominance goals, and child sex). Children in the fifth through eight grade (N = 167) completed self-reports of perceived social competence and social dominance goals. Teachers completed ratings of children's social competence, peer rejection, and reactive and proactive physical and relational aggression. Bias in self-perceived social competence was quantified as the residual difference between child and teacher ratings of the child's social competence. There was a significant interaction between quadratic bias and peer rejection predicting reactive physical aggression; rejected children with a positive bias or a negative bias were highest in reactive physical aggression. The interaction between linear bias, social dominance goals, and the sex of the child was also significant when predicting proactive physical aggression. Among girls who highly valued social dominance, a positive bias predicted greater proactive physical aggression. Results are discussed in terms of implications for aggression theory and intervention. Positively Biased Self-Perceptions: Who Has Them and What are Their Effects?

This study examined demographic and social competency characteristics of children who hold overly-positive self-perceptions of their social acceptance (positive bias). The effects of holding positive bias on aggressive and depressive symptoms were examined in a sample that excluded children on the extreme negative end of the bias continuum. Measures of peer-rated and self-perceived acceptance were obtained for 366 children in the 3rd through 5th grades. Peer-rated aggressive behavior and self-reported depressive symptoms were also collected. Results demonstrated sex, ethnicity, and social preference were uniquely associated with positive bias. Positive bias was related to aggression beyond the effects of social preference. Positive bias was not related to depressive symptoms. This study clarified who is likely to hold positive bias and replicated findings that suggest positive bias is a risk factor for aggressive outcomes. The idea that positive bias is neither a risk nor protective factor for depressive symptoms is discussed.
