Effects of Hydrogen Bonding on the Transition Properties of Ethanol–Water Clusters: A TD-DFT Study

Microscopic origin of breakdown of Stokes-Einstein relation in binary mixtures: Inherent structure analysis

Aqueous binary mixtures often exhibit dramatic departure from the predicted hydrodynamic behavior when transport properties are plotted against composition. We show by inherent structure (IS) analysis that this sharp composition dependent breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation can be attributed to the non-monotonic variation in the average inherent structure energy of these mixtures. Further IS analysis reveals the existence of a unique ground state, stabilized by both the formation of an optimum number of H-bonds and a favorable hydrophobic interaction at this composition. The surprisingly sharp turnaround behavior observed in the effective hydrodynamic radius also owes its origin to the same combination of these two factors. Interestingly, the temperature dependence of isothermal compressibility shows a minimum at the particular composition. Extensive studies on water-dimethyl sulfoxide and water-ethanol mixtures using two different force-fields of water reveal many features that are nearly universal. A justification of this quasi-universal behavior is provided in terms of a mode-coupling theory (MCT) of viscosity, which can serve as the starting point of a remarkable correlation observed with the nearest neighbor structure, as captured by the first peaks of the radial distribution function, and the slowdown in the intermediate scattering function at intermediate wavenumbers. Therefore, the formation of the local structure captured through IS analysis can be correlated with the MCT.

Hydrogen bonding between hydrides of the upper-right part of the periodic table

One of the most important electrostatic interactions between molecules is most definitely the hydrogen bond. Understanding the basis of this interaction may offer us the insight needed to understand its effect on the macroscopic scale. Hydrogen bonding is for example the reason for anomalous properties in compounds like water and naturally life as we know it. The strength of the bond depends on numerous factors, among them the electronegativity of participating atoms. In this work we calculated the strength of hydrogen bonds between hydrides of the upper-right part of the periodic table (C, N, O, F, P, S, Cl, As, Se, Br) using quantum-chemical methods. The aim was to determine what influences the strength of strong and weak hydrogen bonds in simple hydrides. Various relationships were checked. A relation between the strength of the bond and the electronegativity of the participating atoms was found. We also observed a correlation between the strength of hydrogen bonds and the inter-atomic distances, along with the dependence on the charge transfer on the atom of the donor. We also report characteristic geometries of different dimers.

Raman Spectroscopy of Water-Ethanol Solutions: The Estimation of Hydrogen Bonding Energy and the Appearance of Clathrate-like Structures in Solutions

The structure of aqueous alcohol solutions at the molecular level for many decades has remained an intriguing topic in numerous theoretical and practical investigations. The aberrant thermodynamic properties of water-alcohol mixtures are believed to be caused by the differences in energy of hydrogen bonding between water-water, alcohol-alcohol, and alcohol-water molecules. We present the Raman scattering spectra of water, ethanol, and water-ethanol solutions with 20 and 70 vol % of ethanol thoroughly measured and analyzed at temperatures varying from -10 to +70 °C. Application of the MCR-ALS method allowed for each spectrum to extract contributions of molecules with different strengths of hydrogen bonding. The energy (enthalpy) of formation/weakening of hydrogen bonds was calculated using the slope of Van't Hoff plot. The energy of hydrogen bonding in 20 vol % of ethanol was found the highest among all the samples. This finding further supports appearance of clathrate-like structures in water-ethanol solutions with concentrations around 20 vol % of ethanol.

Understanding the azeotropic diethyl carbonate-water mixture by structural and energetic characterization of DEC(H2O)(n) heteroclusters

Diethyl carbonate (DEC) is an oxygenated fuel additive. During its synthesis through a promising green process, a DEC-water azeotrope is formed, which decreases DEC production efficiency in the gas phase. Molecular information about this system is scarce but could be of benefit in understanding (and potentially improving) the synthetic process. Therefore, we report a detailed computational study of the conformers of DEC, and their microsolvation with up to four water molecules, with the goal of understanding the observed 1:3 DEC:H2O molar ratio. The most stable DEC conformers (with mutual energy differences < 1.5 kcal mol(-1)) contribute to the energetic and structural properties of the complexes. An exhaustive stochastic exploration of each potential energy surface of DEC-(H2O)n, (where n = 1, 2, 3, 4) heteroclusters discovered 3, 8, 7, and 4 heterodimers, heterotrimers, heterotetramers, and heteropentamers, respectively, at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. DEC conformers and energies of the most stable structures at each heterocluster size were refined using CCSD(T)/6-311++G(d,p). Energy decomposition, electron density topology, and cooperative effects analyses were carried out to determine the relationship between the geometrical features of the heteroclusters and the non-covalent interaction types responsible for their stabilization. Our findings show that electrostatic and exchange energies are responsible for heterocluster stabilization, and also suggest a mutual weakening among hydrogen bonds when more than three water molecules are present. All described results are complementary and suggest a structural and energetic explanation at the molecular level for the experimental molar ratio of 1:3 (DEC:H2O) for the DEC-water azeotrope.
