A Nano-sized Nd–Ag@polyoxometalate Catalyst for Catalyzing the Multicomponent Hantzsch and Biginelli Reactions

A stable hybrid catalyst (POM-PPPh3/L/Ni) for the reduction of toxic nitroarene compounds in water

Reduction of nitroarenes to aminoarenes using novel and selective catalysts is an important and desirable approach in green chemistry. In this work, a new heterogeneous nanocatalyst, POM-PPPh3/L/Ni, was designed and prepared via functionalizing a Keggin-type polyoxometalate (H3PMo12O40) with (3-bromopropyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide (BPPPh3Br) through strong electrostatic interactions to prepare [PMo12O40][PPPh3]3 (denoted as POM-PPPh3). The obtained compound was modified via nucleophilic attack of the nitrogen donor of a multidentate Schiff base ligand (L) on its propyl chain to produce [PMo12O40][PPPh3/L]2 (denoted as POM-PPPh3/L), which was finally metallated with nickel cations to achieve [PMo12O40][PPPh3/L/Ni]2 (denoted as POM-PPPh3/L/Ni). After full characterization of the prepared material with various physicochemical methods, its catalytic behavior was investigated in the catalytic nitroarene reduction. The influence of various factors on catalytic conversion and selectivity was considered. The synthesized nanocatalyst showed excellent performance in the reduction of nitroarenes in aqueous media in the presence of NaBH4 as a reducing agent. Mild reaction conditions and a short reaction time (10 min) are the prominent features of this new nanocatalyst. In addition, the catalyst was recovered and reused for up to four cycles of catalytic reduction without any significant loss of conversion.

A series of viologen/POM materials with discoloration properties under the stimulation of X-ray, UV, electricity, and organic amines

At present, viologen-based compounds can undergo reversible chemical/physical changes under external stimuli such as light and electricity. This makes these compounds have potential applications in smart windows, displays, and sensors. In order to obtain such materials, three viologen-POM inorganic-organic hybrid compounds have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method, namely {[Cu2(cybpy)8(α-P2W18O62)2}·18H2O (1), (Hbpy)·(cybpy)·[H4(α-P2W18O62)]}·32H2O (2) and {(Hcybpy)2(β-Mo8O26)}·2H2O (3) (cybpy·Br = 1-cyclobutylmethyl-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium bromide, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine). Three compounds exhibit good discoloration behaviors under various external stimuli, especially under the stimulation of X-ray, UV, electricity, and organic amines. In addition, in order to promote the compounds in the actual production of more applications, they were doped into the polymer matrix to construct hybrid films, which not only have the same response to external stimulation but also increase the repeatability of the photochromic process. Moreover, 1-3 powder samples in ethanol solution were ultrasonic treated and deposited on filter paper, which can be successfully used in erasable inkless printing.

Fabrication of stable solid fluorescent starch materials based on Hantzsch reaction

In this paper, a series of fluorescent starches were prepared simply and effectively by Hantzsch multi-component reaction (MRC). These materials showed bright fluorescence emission. Notably, due to the existence of polysaccharide skeleton, starch molecules can effectively inhibit the common aggregation induced quenching effect caused by the aggregation of conjugated molecules in traditional organic fluorescent materials. Meanwhile, the stability of this material is so excellent that the fluorescence emission of the dried starch derivatives would not destroy after boiling at a high temperature in some common solvents, and even brighter fluorescence can be stimulated in alkaline solution. In addition to fluorescence, starch was also endowed with hydrophobic property by one-pot method connecting long alkyl chains. Compared with native starch, the contact angle of fluorescent hydrophobic starch increased from 29° to 134°. Furthermore, the fluorescent starch can be prepared into film, gel and coating by different processing methods. The preparation of these Hantzsch fluorescent starch materials provide a new way for the functional modification of starch materials and has great application potential in detecting, anti-counterfeiting, security printing and other related fields.

The new life of traditional water treatment flocculant polyaluminum chloride (PAC): a green and efficient micro–nano reactor catalyst in alcohol solvents

Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is an inorganic polymer material that has the advantages of a simple preparation process and special electronic structure. It is considered to be the most efficient and widely used flocculation material for water treatment. In this work, PAC has been used as a Lewis acid catalyst in interdisciplinary fields because of its polynuclear Al–O cation structure. Further, its catalytic mechanism in green organic synthesis has been studied in detail by using the multicomponent Biginelli reaction as the probe. The effect of solvent on the self-assembly and aggregation process of PAC materials was investigated using optical microscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, particle size analysis, XPS, IR, SEM and HR-TEM. The results show that the PAC materials have different morphological characteristics in different solvents. The Al–O–Al cations were transformed in the ethanol solvent to form new multi-nuclear cation aggregates Al_b, which could be used as inorganic micro–nano reactors with unique synergistic catalysis in catalytic reactions. This is the first time the role of PAC in the Biginelli reaction has been analyzed with a liquid in situ infrared instrument, which provided favorable evidence for the speculated reaction mechanism. The PAC–ethanol system is, therefore, considered to be a green, efficient (best yield >99%), economic and recyclable catalyst for catalyzing organic synthesis reactions. The development and utilization of PAC materials in organic synthesis will bring new vitality to this cheap material, which is widely used in industries.

Silver nanoparticles-decorated Preyssler functionalized cellulose biocomposite as a novel and efficient catalyst for the synthesis of 2-amino-4H-pyrans and spirochromenes

Silver nanoparticles-decorated Preyssler functionalized cellulose biocomposite (PC/AgNPs) was prepared and fully characterized by FTIR, UV–vis, SEM, and TEM techniques. The preparation of PC/AgNPs was studied systematically to optimize the processing parameters by Taguchi method using the amount of PC, reaction temperature, concentration of silver nitrate and pH of medium. Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal (4 parameters, 4 level) was used for the experimental design. The SEM analysis confirmed the presence of the Preyssler as a white cloud as well as spherical AgNPs on the surface of cellulose. The formation of AgNPs on the surface was observed by changing of the color from yellow to deep brown and confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. The best yield of AgNPs forming was obtained in pH 12.5 at 80 ºC in 20 min. TEM analysis confirmed the formation of spherical AgNPs with a size of 50 nm, at the 1% wt. loading of Preyssler. This easily prepared PC/AgNPs was successfully employed as an efficient, green, and reusable catalyst in the synthesis of a wide range of 2-amino-4H-pyran and functionalized spirochromene derivatives via a one-pot, multicomponent reaction. The chief merits realized for this protocol were the utilization of commercially available or easily accessible starting materials, operational simplicity, facile work-up procedure, obtaining of high to excellent yields of the products and being done under green conditions. The catalyst could be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused several times without observing any appreciable loss in its efficiency.
