Abstract
Acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) molecular rotors have drawn substantial attention for their applications in monitoring temperature variations within cellular microenvironments, biomimetic photocatalysis, and bioimaging. In this study, we have synthesized two novel rotor molecules, NBN1 and NBN2, by incorporating benzodithiophene (BDT) as the donor core and naphthalic anhydride/naphthalimide (NA/NI) moieties as acceptors using Pd-catalyzed Stille coupling reactions. These molecules exhibited distinct charge transfer (CT) behavior in both their absorption and emission spectra and displayed prominent emission solvatochromism. Notably, NBN1 exhibited better CT properties among the two molecules. Moreover, these A-D-A molecular rotors demonstrated remarkable sensitivities of their emission spectra toward solvent polarities and temperatures. Rotors NBN1 and NBN2 showed positive temperature coefficients with internal temperature sensitivities of 0.34% °C-1 and 0.13% °C-1 in chloroform, respectively, and thus hold significant promise for detecting temperature variations in cellular microenvironment. Furthermore, we have modeled these molecules with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to form composite systems and performed theoretical calculations to obtain valuable insights into their charge transfer behavior. Theoretical results suggested that these molecules have the potential to efficiently sensitize and modulate the band gap of g-C3N4 and show potential for diverse photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Numerous methods, including pH meters and optical sensors, have been developed for the detection of pH, which is an important indicator in various fields. However, those methods are susceptible to errors in strongly acidic and basic ranges and inaccurate pH measurement due to sample turbidity, hindering their application such as photographic industries and wastewater treatment facilities. Eco-friendly and non-invasive 19F NMR spectroscopy is a promising technique for measurement of strong acids and bases owing to its high sensitivity and little interference; nevertheless, inconsistencies in reproducibility impede its widespread adoption. Herein, we developed a19F NMR-based pH sensor by introducing an intramolecular internal standard strategy into a pH-responsive fluorinated material. Based on the acceptable deviation (ΔδF = 17-19 ppb) in the evaluation of the internal standard signal, this pH-sensing platform enabled reproducible pH measurements in strongly acidic and basic environments. Moreover, its 19F NMR response showed reversibility and high stability to potential interfering factors, and the low absolute difference (0.026-0.086 in pH) for real samples such as diet Coke suggests its potential suitability for various acidic beverages.

Abstract
The synthesis, sensor activity, and logic behavior of a novel 4-iminoamido-1,8-naphthalimide bichromophoric system based on a "fluorophore-receptor" architecture with ICT chemosensing properties is reported. The synthesized compound showed good colorimetric and fluorescence signaling properties as a function of pH and proved itself as a promising probe for the rapid detection of pH in an aqueous solution and base vapors in a solid state. The novel dyad is able to work as a two-input logic gate with chemical inputs H+ (Input 1) and HO- (Input 2) executing INHIBIT logic gate. The synthesized bichromophoric system and the corresponding intermediates demonstrated good antibacterial activity toward Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria when compared with the Gentamycin standard.

Abstract
The structural properties of the polyethylenimine (PEI) polymer are generally tuned and selectively modified to reinforce its potential in a broad spectrum of applied domains of medicine, healthcare, material design, sensing, and electronic optimization. The selective modification of the polymer brings about changes in its interfacial characteristics and behavior. The current work involves the synthesis of naphthalimide conjugated polyethylenimine organic nanoparticles (NPEI-ONPs). The interfacial molecular structure of NPEI-ONPs is explored in an aqueous medium at pH 7.4 using surface tensiometry and sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS). The hydrophobic functionalization rendered a concentration-dependent surface coverage of NPEI-ONPs, where the SFG-VS analysis exhibited the molecular rearrangement of its hydrophobic groups at the interface. The interaction of NPEI-ONPs with double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) is carried out to observe the relevance of the synthesized nanocomposites in the biomedical domain. The bulk-specific studies (i.e., thermal denaturation, viscometry, zeta (ζ) potential, and ATR-FTIR) reveal the condensation of dsDNA in the presence of NPEI-ONPs, making its structure more compact. The interface-sensitive SFG-VS showcased the impact of the dsDNA and NPEI-ONP interaction on the interfacial molecular behavior of NPEI-ONPs at the air-aqueous interface. Our results exhibit the potential of such hydrophobically functionalized ONPs as promising candidates for developing biomedical sealants, substrate coatings, and other biomedical domains.

Abstract
A new highly water-soluble 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore designed on the “fluorophore-spacer-receptor1-receptor2” model has been synthesized. Due to the unusually high solubility in water, the novel compound proved to be a selective PET-based probe for the determination of pHs in aqueous solutions and rapid detection of water content in organic solvents. Based on the pH dependence of the probe and its high water solubility, the INH logic gate was achieved using NaOH and water as chemical inputs, where NaOH is the disabler and the water is an enabler. In addition, the probe showed effective fluorescence “off-on” reversibility on glass support after exposure to acid and base vapors, which defines it as a promising platform for rapid detection of acid/base vapors in the solid-state, thus extending the molecular sensing concept from solution to the solid support.

Abstract
We reported here the unique ability of a Rhodamine 6G-based probe (3) to detect discriminately several targets, including H+, HO-, Cu2+, Hg2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Sn2+, Ni2+, Al3+, Pb2+, Ce3+and Ag+, by unambiguously colorimetric and fluorimetric outcomes. In aqueous solutions, the presence of proton induced the ring-opening of rhodamine moiety but the presence of hydroxide induced the conversion of 2-hydroxyphenyl hydrazone moiety from the non-fluorescent benzenoid form into the fluorescent quinoid form. The probe could to distinguish between different cations in DMF and to work like an artificial tongue at molecular level. Several logic gates including OR, INHIBIT and TRANSFER, were performed by the probe. Moreover, the probe is able to execute three INHIBIT logic gates by two inputs, which was exploited to execute a digital molecular comparator.

Abstract
A novel Al3+ chemosensor NPA was designed and synthesized on basis of the mechanism of ICT and CHEF. Upon addition of Al3+, the probe NPA displayed a bright green fluorescence under UV radiation and visual color change from yellow to colorless. Spectrum titrations showed that NPA could be recognized as a fluorescent turn-on probe with 10-8 M detection level. The probe was successfully applied in real water sample and test paper. More important, NPA-Al3+ complex were used as a fluorescent turn-off probe for the detection of ClO- with the detection as low as 2.34 × 10-8 M. The performance of NPA to Al3+ and NPA-Al3+ complex to ClO- demonstrated that NPA could be served as a sensitive probe and exhibit INHIBIT logic gate behavior with Al3+ and ClO- as inputs.

Abstract
A highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for the determination of fructose is developed. The fluorescent sensor was prepared by incorporating a new naphthalimide dye with a planar structure as a selectophore and graphene oxide (GO) nanoplatelets as a quencher for rapid optical detection of fructose. The designed probe, made with the high fusion loop-containing dye, along with the GO nanoplatelets, detected fructose over the other monosaccharides very well. The proposed sensor displays a linear response range of 7 × 10-5 to 3 × 10-2 M with a low limit of detection of 23 × 10-6 M in solution at pH 7.4. This sensor shows a good selectivity towards fructose with respect to other saccharides. The proposed sensor was then applied to the determination of fructose in human plasma with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A simple pH fluorescent probe, N-(6-morpholino-1, 3-dioxo-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-2(3H)-yl) isonicotinamide (NDI), based on naphthalimide as the fluorophore and isonicotinic acid hydrazide as the reaction site was synthesized and characterized. It is useful for monitoring acidic and alkaline pH. The results of pH titration indicated that NDI exhibits obvious emission enhancement with a pKa of 4.50 and linear response to small pH fluctuations within the acidic range of 3.00–6.50. Interestingly, NDI also displayed strong pH-dependent characteristics with pKa 9.34 and linearly responded to an alkaline range of 8.30–10.50. The sensing response mechanism was confirmed by 1H NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopy. The mechanism of the optical responses of NDI toward pH was also determined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, NDI displayed a highly selective and sensitive response to hydrogen ions and hydroxyl ions. The probe was successfully applied to image acidic and alkaline pH value fluctuations in HeLa cells and has lysosomal targeting ability. When the probe was in the protonation process, the fluorescence intensity gradually decreased, whereas when the probe was in the deprotonation process, the fluorescence intensity gradually increased.![]()

Abstract
In this communication, we have developed an optical chemosensor 2-amino N-(6-bromo-1,3-dioxo-1H-benzo[de]isoquinolin-2(3H)-yl)benzamide (NAPH) for selective detection of Al3+ by reacting 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalic anhydride with 2-aminobenzohydrazide. In (DMSO:H2O, 1:1, v/v) medium, the selective and specific nature of NAPH towards Al3+ was observed by the quenching along with a blue-shift in the absorption of NAPH at 465 nm that resulted in the distinct colour change from light brown to colourless. The selective complexation that occurred between NAPH and Al3+ was investigated by 1H NMR and DFT methods. Under similar conditions, the weakly fluorescent receptor NAPH showed a distinct fluorescence enhancement at 555 nm in the presence of Al3+ among the other tested metal ions and anions. The NAPH·Al3+ complex formation is reversible upon addition of strong chelating agent EDTA. The receptor NAPH can be applied to detect Al3+ down to 2.9 μM without any interference from other tested metal ions. In addition, the receptor NAPH was successfully applied to detect Al3+ in live HeLa cells.

Abstract
We investigated the pKa increasing effects on meso-phenol BODIPY to achieve fluorescent pH sensors working in extreme alkalinity. We demonstrated the effects of substituents on meso, α, γ and position of the hydroxyl group on pKa. By considering these parameters, we developed pH sensors working above 11.0 in aqueous medium (ethanol/water 1:1). One of these sensors had a pKa of 12.0 and enabled the measurement of pH up to 13.6. This highly photostable and bright sensor compound could be synthesized easily from cheap starting materials.

Abstract
Abstract2-(Quinolin-2-yl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one (Q) was synthesized via the Brønsted acid-promoted tandem cyclization/dehydrogenation reaction with a good yield. Compound Q is a selective ‘turn-on’ fluorescent sensor for Zn2+ ion without interference by Cd2+. The 1:1 binding model of Q to Zn2+ was confirmed by the Benesi-Hildebrand analysis, Job’s plot analysis and a ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) titration experiment. Furthermore, the light-on fluorescent response can be observed by the naked eye under UV-lamp irradiation (365 nm).

Abstract
Conversion of multicolor luminescence is one of desirable goals in study and development of next-generation molecular emitters, whereas involving visible light into the control of the above-mentioned ability has been poorly addressed due to the need of a relatively complicate molecular design. In this work, we present a novel dyad with a linkage of 4-piperazinyl-1,8-naphthalimide and cyanostyryl-modified azulene moiety, upon which the luminescence signal can be orthogonally controlled by protonation and green light irradiation. The superior features of the protonation induced excited state energy alteration, followed by green light driven photoisomerization led to a progressive luminescent color conversion among blue, yellow and green at the single molecular level. This strategy may bring in novel insights for preparing advanced function-integrated optoelectronic materials.

Abstract
A novel fluorescence sensing 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore is synthesized and investigated. The novel probe comprising two different binding moieties is capable to detect selectively Fe3+ over the other representative metal ions as well as a combination of biologically important cations such as Fe3+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ in the physiological range without an interfering effect of the pHs. Due to the remarkable fluorescence changes in the presence of Fe3+, Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions, INH and AND logic gates are executed and the system is able to act as a single output combinatorial logic circuit with three chemical inputs.

Abstract
A series of luminescent iridium(iii) complexes were synthesized and evaluated for their ability to interact with hydroxide ions in semi-aqueous media at ambient temperature. Upon the addition of OH-, a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction takes place at the bromine groups of the N^N ligand of complex 1, resulting in the generation of a yellow-green luminescence. Complex 1 showed a 35-fold enhanced emission at pH 14 when compared to neutral pH, and the detection limit for OH- ions was 4.96 μM. Complex 1 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity, long-lived luminescence and impressive stability. Additionally, we have demonstrated the practical application of complex 1 to detect OH- ions in simulated wastewater.

Abstract
We report the existence of a short-lived triplet electronic state of 2,6-ANS (2-anilinonaphthalene-6-sulfonic acid), which, together with nonplanar (NP) and planar [charge-transfer (CT)] states, is produced following photoexcitation; these results are based on nanosecond transient absorption and time-resolved decays. The short-lived triplet state has a lifetime of ∼126 ns and is observed via triplet-triplet (T-T) transitions after exciting 2,6-ANS with a pump laser pulse of 355 nm (probe wavelength range of 360-500 nm). Moreover, the CT state, which is very close to the NP state produced from the locally excited state/NP state, emits active fluorescence with a lifetime of ∼11 ns. The solvent plays a major role in the rotation of the phenylamino group during the conversion of the NP state to the CT state, and vice versa. Intersystem crossing occurs from the CT state. Thus, investigating the triplet state together with the CT/NP states of 2,6-ANS, a commonly used probe for sensing proteins and other biomolecules, is highly relevant and helps reveal its photoexcitation dynamics.

Abstract
Two novel highly water-soluble fluorescence sensing 1,8-naphthalimides are synthesized and investigated. The novel compounds are designed on the "fluorophore-receptor1-spacer-receptor2" model as a molecular fluorescence probe for determination of cations and anions in 100% aqueous media. The novel probes comprising N-imide and N-phenylpiperazine or morpholine substituents are capable to operate simultaneously via ICT and PET signaling mechanism as a function of pH and to recognize selectively Cu2+ and Hg2+ over the other representative metal ions. Due to the remarkable fluorescence changes in the presence of protons, hydroxyl anions, Hg2+ and Cu2+, INH and doubly disabled INH logic gates are executed and the systems are able to act as a single output combinatorial logic circuit with four chemical inputs.
