Synthesis of Novel Thiazole Based Carbaldehyde as Potential Sensor for Fluoride Anion and their Spectroscopic Properties

Fluorenone-naphthyl encapsulated dual sensor for recognition of F- and Hg2+: Syngenetic effect with drug sobisis and molecular docking studies

A novel fluorenone-naphthyl pendant sensor (FTU) possessing thiourea functionality has been synthesized via a simple condensation method and utilized for the recognition of F- and Hg2+ ions in the solution of CH3CN. The addition of F- and Hg2+ ions to the FTU solution led to the appearance of red-shifted absorption bands at 340 and 315 nm, respectively. On the other hand, in the fluorescence spectrum, the two-fold decrease in fluorescence intensity of probe FTU was observed with F- ions; while complete quenching of the fluorescence intensity was noticed with Hg2+ ions at 423 nm. The limit of detection values of F- and Hg2+ ions were found to be 1.02 & 29.1 nM, respectively, measured by UV-vis studies and 0.0185 & 0.81 nM, respectively, measured by fluorescence studies, which are less than recommended by WHO. DFT computational assessments and 1H NMR titration experiments pointed to F- induced deprotonation of thiourea NH signals. However, the chelation-enhanced quenching effect (CHEQ) was held responsible for fluorescence quenching with Hg2+ addition. Moreover, the in-situ formed FTU + F- complex was utilized for secondary sensing of drug sobisis. Furthermore, the real-world applicability of sensor FTU has been successfully scrutinized for the recognition of F- ions in the toothpaste samples. In addition, molecular docking studies revealed that FTU exhibited excellent antibacterial potency towards different gram-positive as well as negative strains.

Colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of fluoride ion using thiazole derived receptor

Thiazole based receptor 3, was designed and synthesized by condensation reactionof5-chlorosalicylaldehyde with 4-(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)semicarbazide for colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of fluoride ion. Receptor 3 was characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and HRMS, and shows absorption in 280-400 nm region with emission at 442 nm in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Addition of fluoride ion to the THF solution of receptor 3 results in color change from colorless to yellow with significant change in UV-Visible absorption. The receptor-anion interaction occurs via hydrogen bonding followed by deprotonation which results in large bathochromic shift in absorption spectra and naked-eye color change. The colorimetric changes show selective response for fluoride ions over other anions. Fluorescence studies exhibit remarkable enhancement in emission intensity upon addition of fluoride ion with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.6 nM. The ¹H NMR titration studies exhibit deprotonation of the -OH proton of the salicylaldimine moiety resulting significant colorimetric and fluorimetric changes.

Fluoride ion (F^-) contamination can be accumulated along the water and the food chain and cause serious risk to public health. It is of the greatest importance that selects the suitable chromophores and fluorophores for the design and synthesis of outstanding selective, sensitive chromogenic and fluorogenic probes for detection of fluoride ion. In this review is mainly focused on the current progress of fluoride ion detection according to their receptors into several categories like anthracene, azo, benzothiazole, BODIPY, calixarene, coumarin, imidazole, diketopyrrolopyrrole, hydrazone, imidazole, naphthalene, naphthalimide, quantum dots, Schiff base and urea group sensing in the year 2015-2019.
