A Selective Turn off Fluorescence Sensor Based on Propranolol-SDS Assemblies for Fe3+ Detection

Exploring the pH-Responsive Interaction of β-Blocker Drug Propranolol with Biomimetic Micellar Media: Fluorescence and Electronic Absorption Studies

Interaction of neutral and charged lipophilic beta-blocker drug, propranolol (PPL) with biomimicking nanocavities formed by micelles bearing same and opposite charges namely, cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a surface-active ionic liquid 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (HDMIC) and anionic sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) have been investigated using fluorescence and absorption spectroscopic techniques. Binding of PPL to SDS at pH < pKa is characterised by biphasic interactions with decrease in fluorescence intensity at lower concentrations and subsequent increase post micellization. All the surfactants show significant interactions with the neutral drug molecule at pH > pKa, which is evident from the strongest binding constant ( K b ) values at pH 10.4. Results of quenching studies indicate that the location of drug molecule is determined by its charge, which is influenced by both pH and charge on micelle surface. For PPL-CTAB and PPL-HDMIC systems, quenching was strongest at pH 10.4, moderate at pH 7.4 and was absent at pH 3.5. However, the PPL-SDS system displayed similar K SV values at all pH conditions, suggesting that the probe is at the same position regardless of pH. Non-covalent interactions, which play crucial role in biological systems, are similarly the primary driving force governing the interaction between PPL and surfactant micelles.

Functionalized Amphiphilic Block Copolymers and Complex Emulsions for Selective Sensing of Dissolved Metals at Liquid-Liquid Interfaces

Increasing contamination in potable water supplies necessitates the development of sensing methods that provide the speed and selectivity necessary for safety. One promising method relies on recognition and detection at the liquid-liquid interface of dynamic complex emulsions. These all-liquid materials transduce changes in interfacial tensions into optical signals via the coupling of their chemical, physical, and optical properties. Thus, to introduce selectivity, it is necessary to modify the liquid-liquid interface with an interfacially stable and selective recognition unit. To this end, we report the synthesis and characterization of amphiphilic block copolymers modified with metal chelators to selectively measure the concentrations of dissolved metal ions. We find that significant reduction in interfacial tensions arises upon quantitative addition of metal ions with high affinity toward functionalized chelators. Furthermore, measurements from UV-vis spectroscopy reveal that complexation of the block copolymers with metal ions leads to an increase in surface excess and surfactant effectiveness. We also demonstrate selective detection of iron(III) cations (Fe3+) on the μM levels even through interference from other mono-, di-, or trivalent cations in complex matrices of synthetic groundwater. Our results provide a unique platform that couples selective recognition and modulation of interfacial behaviors and demonstrates a step forward in the development of the multiplexed sensing device needed to deconvolute the complicated array of contaminants that comprise real-world environmental samples.

Fluorescence Quenching of Carbazole by Selected Phenols in a Cationic Micellar System of Cetyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB)

A group of selected phenols i.e., picric acid, p-Nitrophenol, m-Nitrophenol, o-Nitrophenol, and phenol interactions were studied with a fluorescent probe carbazole in a micellar system of CTAB. CTAB concentration was optimized for maximum quenching of carbazole for each studied phenol. Interaction was studied in 0.02 and 0.1 mol/dm³ CTAB. All the studied phenols resulted in the quenching of carbazole in both CTAB concentrations though lower CTAB concentration was found optimum for highest quenching of the probe carbazole. Carbazole fluorescence quenching with phenols were explained with the help of Stern-Volmer equation that produced the constants of Stern-Volmer ([Formula: see text]). [Formula: see text] shows the sensitiveness of the method for the studied phenol and were observed in the order picric acid > phenol > m-Nitrophenol > p-Nitrophenol > o-Nitrophenol. Detection threshold (DT) and quantification threshold (QT) were observed in the order 1.76 [Formula: see text] 10^-7 - 6.30 [Formula: see text] 10^-7 mol/dm³ and 5.898 [Formula: see text] 10^-7 - 2.11 [Formula: see text] 10^-6 mol/dm³ respectively. The method is reproducible and is effective for the determination of studied phenols in the samples.
