A Versatile Aggregation-induced Emission Fluorescent Probe for Visible Detection of pH

Multiresponsive Bilayer Hydrogel Actuator with Switchable Shape Morphing Capability and Visible Color/Fluorescence Change

Bilayer hydrogels, endowed with multiresponsive and switchable color-changing properties, have garnered significant attention for bioinspired artificial intelligent materials. However, the design and fabrication of such hydrogels that can fully mimic the adaptation of the live organism, i.e., simultaneous changes in shape, fluorescent, and/or visible color, still remain significant challenges. Herein, a multiresponsive (e.g., temperature, salt, and pH) and multiadaptive (shape, fluorescent color, and visible color changes) hydrogel was fabricated by employing monomers featuring pH-responsive fluorescence 4-(2-(4-(dimethylamino) phenyl)-1-isocyanovinyl) phenol (DP) and switchable color-changing 4-(2-sulfethyl) -1-(4-vinylbenzyl) pyridinium betaine (VPES). The bilayer hydrogel comprises a temperature- and pH-responsive gel layer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate), along with a pH-, temperature-, and salt-responsive gel layer, poly(acrylamide-co-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-VPES)@DP. Due to the opposite swelling/shrinking behavior between the two layers, the prepared hydrogel exhibits shape changes in response to thermal, salt, and pH stimuli, along with switchable fluorescent color and visible color change that originate from DP and polyVPES, respectively. Apart from multiresponsive behavior, this hydrogel also shows an excellent antifatigue property and high sensitivity, which makes it hold significant potential in many applications. We anticipate that this strategy to realize multiresponsive capability in this work can also inspire the design of the biomimetic smart materials.

The Synergistic Mechanisms of AIE, ESIPT and ICT in the α-cyanostilbene-based Derivative: A Red-fluorescence Probe With a Large Stokes' Shift for Copper (II) Ion Determination and Reversible Response to Amine/acid Vapor

Herein, α-cyanostilbene-based luminogen with an electron donor-π-electron acceptor (D-π-A) architecture was formylated into the salicylaldehyde-analogue luminogen, followed by the Schiff base reaction with phenylamine, a red-emitting luminogen was elaborately designed and successfully synthesized in a high yield of 89%. Its well-defined structure was confirmed by FT-IR, MALDI-TOF-MS, HR-MS and 1H/13C NMR technologies. Based on the synergistic mechanisms of aggregation-induced emission (AIE), excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), it enjoyed a red-fluorescence emission at 627 nm in THF/water mixtures (fw = 95%) and was used as a probe. Moreover, the TLC-based test strips loaded with the probe not only exhibited the reversible fluorescence response to amine/acid vapor but also showed sensitive and selective fluorescence response towards Cu2+. Furthermore, the fluorescence titration experiment between the probe and Cu2+ in THF/water mixtures (fw = 95%, pH = 7.4) revealed that the detection limit was 1.18 × 10-7 M and the binding constant was 1.59 × 105. Job's plot experiment and HR-MS analysis revealed the 2:1 binding stoichiometry of the probe with Cu2+. The method enabled real-time assessment for Cu2+ in real water samples. This study could offer insightful opinions on the development of long-wavelength emissive luminogens based on α-cyanostilbene.

An Ultra-low Detection Limit Fe3+ Optical Fiber Fluorescent Sensor Based on a Anti-B18H22 Derivative with Aggregation-induced Emission Enhancement

A fluorescent Fe3+ probe ((C10H7NO2)2B18H20, M1) by introducing two isoquinoline-1-carboxylic acid group into the 6,9-position of anti-B18H22 was designed and synthesized. The structure of M1 was investigated by 1H NMR, MS, FT-IR and theoretical calculation, and its optical properties were characterized with UV-Vis and PL. M1 showed aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties in THF/H2O solution, and exhibited an excellent selectivity toward Fe3+ in THF/H2O (v/v, ƒw = 95%) solution with a detection limit of 1.93 × 10-5 M. The interaction mechanism of probe for detecting Fe3+ is attributed to the involvement of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. Furthermore, a optical fiber fluorescent Fe3+ sensor based on M1 sensing film was developed, the detection limit of the optical fiber Fe3+ fluorescent sensor could be improved to13.8 pM, the ultra-low detection limit is superior to most reported fluorescent probes (or sensors) towards Fe3+. This method has the advantages of high sensitivity, anti-interference and easy to operate, and has great potential in the field of the analysis of environmental and biological samples.

Ratiometric fluorescent probe based on non-conjugated polymer dots for pH measurements in ordinary Portland cement-based materials

An organic fluorescent probe, citric acid-1,3-Propanediamine-Rhodamine B (CPR) was synthesized to determine pH of ordinary Portland cement requiring only a small sample size (less than 500 μL cement leachate). The SEM, XRD, and FTIR investigations demonstrate that citric acid-1,3-Propanediamine are polymer dots with a fusiform structure. Ratio pH probe is constructed by rhodamine B with polymer dots, which exhibits a linear response in high alkaline range. A 6-fold increase in fluorescence intensity (455 nm) is achieved at pH from 12.00 to 13.25. Combined with measurements of the isothermal calorimeter, mineral composition, and microscopic morphology, variation of pH is used to evaluate the changes of components during hydration. Furthermore, CPR can be applied to measure pH of high-dose pulverized fuel ash blending systems, the non-pure cement with slightly lower alkalinity.

A novel AIEE active anti-B18H22derivative-based Cu2+and Fe3+fluorescence off-on-off sensor

A novel fluorescence sensor for successive detection of Cu²⁺and Fe³⁺based on anti-B₁₈H₂₂derivative which possesses 5-hydroxyisoquinoline as an ionophore was synthesized via a one-pot and its structure and photophysical properties were characterized by NMR, HRMS, FTIR, UV-vis, PL and theoretical calculation. The fluorophore displays two emission peaks at 460 nm and 670 nm in THF solution coming from the emission of the locally excited state and intramolecular charge transfer fluorescence, respectively. The complex exhibited obvious aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics in THF/H₂O solution by increasing the aqueous concentration from 70% to 95%. The AIEE molecules showed a high selectivity towards Cu²⁺over other metal ions by forming a 2:1 metal-to-ligand complex in THF/H₂O (fw = 20%) solution, the fluorescence intensity increased as a linear function of the Cu²⁺concentration at 460 nm due to the inhibition of PET effect. The fluorescent emission was quenched linearly by the addition of Fe³⁺, which provides a method for successive determination of Cu²⁺and Fe³⁺based on 'off-on-off' fluorescence of the fluorescent. The detection limit of Cu²⁺and Fe³⁺was 5.7 × 10^-6M and 7.2 × 10^-5M respectively. Morever, a rapid identification of Cu²⁺in the aqueous solution by naked eyes can be realized. In addition, the molecules were pH-sensitive, the fluorescence quenching can be observed in strongly alkaline environment. The method has been applied to the determination of copper ions in water samples with satisfactory results.

Design, synthesis and photophysical studies of BODIPY-o, m, p-phenylenediamine-based probes: Insights into their responsiveness under different pH conditions

In this paper, a series of novel phenylenediamine-fluoroboron pyrrole fluorescent derivatives were prepared which have distinct responsiveness under different hydrogen ion concentration (pH) conditions. It is noticed that the products showed excellent fluorescence properties in different solvents, especially in tetrahydrofuran and dichloromethane, with the most prominent fluorescence intensity, while the fluorescence in methanol, acetonitrile, and dimethyl sulfoxide was weaker. Responsiveness under different hydrogen ion concentration conditions in aqueous solutions were also observed, where the fluorescence intensity is quenching when the pH is 4.0. With regard to cells imaging investigation, the products showed the prominent fluorescence in HeLa cells. Further acidic cell imaging results showed that under acidic conditions made of formic acid or acetic acid, the intracellular fluorescence of the compounds was clustered around the cells and intensive enough different from without acidity control group. Especially, the compounds have unique fluorescence in acidic environment and has great potential and research value as acidic probes.
