A Visual and Ratiometric Chemosensor Using Thiophene Functionalized Hydrazone for the Selective Sensing of Pb2+ and F- Ions

Colorimetric and Fluorometric Determination of Fluoride in Tetrahydrofuran and Dimethyl Sulfoxide Using a 4-Hydroxypyrene Probe

F- ions (fluoride ions) are crucial in various chemical waste and environmental safety contexts. However, excessive fluoride exposure can pose a threat to human well-being. In this study, a simple 4-substituted pyrene derivative known as 4-hydroxypyrene (4-PyOH) was designed as a colorimetric probe for detecting F- through the formation of hydrogen bonds between F- and a hydroxyl group. The probe 4-PyOH exhibited exceptional sensitivity and selectivity towards F- ions and was successfully utilized as test strips for detecting F- ions in organic solvents. The detection limit reached an impressively low level of 3.06 × 10-7 M in the organic solvent. The recognition mechanism was confirmed through 1H NMR titration.

An "off-on" fluorescent nanosensor for the detection of cadmium ions based on APDC-etched CdTe/CdS/SiO2 quantum dots

In this study, we have developed a novel fluorescent "OFF-ON" quantum dots (QDs) sensor based on CdTe/CdS/SiO2 cores. Ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC), ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) served as potential chemical etchants. Among these three etchants, APDC exhibited the most pronounced quenching effect (94.06%). The APDC-etched CdTe/CdS/SiO2 QDs demonstrated excellent optical properties: the fluorescence of the APDC-etched CdTe/CdS/SiO2 QDs system (excitation wavelength: 365 nm and emission wavelength: 622 nm) was significantly and selectively restored upon the addition of cadmium ions (Cd2+) (89.22%), compared to 15 other metal ions. The linear response of the APDC-etched CdTe/CdS/SiO2 QDs was observed within the cadmium ion (Cd2+) concentration ranges of 0-20 μmol L-1 and 20-160 μmol L-1 under optimized conditions (APDC: 300 μmol L-1, pH: 7.0, reaction time: 10 min). The detection limit (LOD) of the APDC-etched CdTe/CdS/SiO2 QDs for Cd2+ was 0.3451 μmol L-1 in the range of 0-20 μmol L-1. The LOD achieved by the QDs in this study surpasses that of the majority of previously reported nanomaterials. The feasibility of using APDC-etched CdTe/CdS/SiO2 QDs for Cd2+ detection in seawater, freshwater, and milk samples was verified, with average recoveries of 95.27%-110.68%, 92%-106.47%, and 90.73%-111.60%, respectively, demonstrating satisfactory analytical precision (RSD ≤ 8.26).

Ethyl 3-aminobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylate Derived Ratiometric Schiff Base Fluorescent Sensor for the Recognition of In3+ and Pb2

An ethyl 3-aminobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylate derived ratiometric Schiff base fluorescent sensor R was devised and synthesized. R exhibited a highly sensitive and selective ratiometric response to In3+ in DMF/H2O tris buffer solution. R exhibited a colorimetric/fluorescent dual-channel response to In3+. More importantly, R can distinguish In3+ from Ga3+ and Al3+ in less than 5 min. R exhibited a good linear correlation with the concentration of In3+ in the 5-25 μM range and the limit of detection for In3+ was found to be 8.36 × 10-9 M. According to the job`s plot and MS spectra, R formed a complex with In3+ at 1:2 with a complexation constant of 8.24 × 109 M2. Based on Gaussian theory calculations, the response mechanism of R to In3+ can be explained by photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanisms. In addition, R can be used for the detection of indium in tap water with satisfactory recoveries. Meanwhile, R displayed a linear relationship to micromolar concentrations (0-50 μM) of Pb2+ and recognized Pb2+ in a ratiometric response with a detection limit of 8.3 × 10-9 M.

Recent Progress on Fluorescent Probes in Heavy Metal Determinations for Food Safety: A Review

One of the main challenges faced in food safety is the accumulation of toxic heavy metals from environmental sources, which can sequentially endanger human health when they are consumed. It is invaluable to establish a practical assay for the determination of heavy metals for food safety. Among the current detection methods, technology based on fluorescent probes, with the advantages of sensitivity, convenience, accuracy, cost, and reliability, has recently shown pluralistic applications in the food industry, which is significant to ensure food safety. Hence, this review systematically presents the recent progress on novel fluorescent probes in determining heavy metals for food safety over the past five years, according to fluorophores and newly emerging sensing cores, which could contribute to broadening the prospects of fluorescent materials and establishing more practical assays for heavy metal determinations.

Detection of Heavy Metal Ions by Ratiometric Photoelectric Sensor

In recent years, heavy metal pollution has become increasingly serious. Heavy metals exist in an environment mainly in the form of ions (heavy metal ions, HMs). They can contaminate food, water, soil, and the atmosphere, leading to serious harm to plants and animals. With high bioavailability and nonbiodegradability, HMs can accumulate through biomagnification. Consequently, heavy metal pollution has become the cause of many fatal diseases threatening human health and ecological environment. Therefore, the accurate detection of HMs is vital and necessary. In this paper, the harm and limit standards of heavy metals were systematically summarized and the common analysis methods were overviewed and compared. Specifically, the latest research progress of ratiometric photoelectric sensor, including optical and electrical sensor, were mainly described. The research status and advantages and disadvantages of a photoelectric sensor were summarized. Furthermore, the future directions were proposed, which provided the reference for the further research and application of the ratiometric photoelectric sensor.

A Fluorimetric Method Based On Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer For Selective Detection Of Chlorferon

In the present work, reusable magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers have been used for the first time as an adsorbent for the determination of chlorferon. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers have been used for the selective separation of chlorferon from the solution and sensitive fluorimetric determination has been performed using the native fluorescence of chlorferon. The developed method is rapid and determination of chlorferon was completed in an hour. Limit of detection (LOD) of the method was found to be 0.0027 µM and the linearity of the calibration graph was observed within the range of 0.01-0.36 µM (2.5 - 75 µg L^-1). Adsorption isotherms point out the multilayer adsorption and the heterogeneous distribution of binding sites for imprinted polymer and homogeneous binding site for non-imprinted polymer. The adsorption capacities of imprinted polymer and non-imprinted polymer were calculated as 2.03 μmol g^-1 and 0.96 μmol g^-1, respectively and the imprinting factor was found to be 2.11. The interference effects of some organic compounds and characterization studies were also evaluated. The method has been applied to honey and tap water samples and the recoveries were found to be in the range of 91.3 and 101.1 %.

Quantum Dots Based Fluorescent Probe for the Selective Detection of Heavy Metal Ions

Heavy metal ions are one of the primary causes of environmental pollution. A marshal effect of heavy metal ions is a paramount ultimatum to humans, aquatic animals and other organisms present in nature. Multitude arrays of materials have been proclaimed for sensing of heavy metal ions and also many methodologies are applied for heavy metal ion sensing. Due to their toxicity and non-biodegradability, it is required to be perceived immediately prior to its manifestation of harmful effects. Quantum Dots (QDs) are zero-dimensional nanomaterial particles and owing to their distinctive optical and electronic properties, they are utilized as nanosensors. QDs have enriched fluorescence properties which includes broad excitation spectrum, narrow emission spectrum and photostability. QDs offer eclectic and sensitive detection of heavy metal ions due to presence of discrete capping agents and different functional groups present on the surface of the QDs. These capping layers and functional groups attune the sensing capability of the QDs, which leverages the interactions of QDs with various analytes by different mechanisms. This review, comprising of papers from 2011 to 2020,focuses on heavy metal ions sensing potential of various quantum dots and its applicability as a nanosensor for on field heavy metal ions detection in water.
