Abstract
BACKGROUND Risk preference is often defined as the tendency to engage in risky activities. Increasing evidence shows that risk preference is associated with mood disorders. However, the causality and direction of this association are not clear. METHODS Genome-wide association study summary data of risk preference in 939,908 participants from UK Biobank and 23andMe were used to identify general risk preference. Data for 413,466 individuals taken from The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium were used to identify bipolar disorder (BP). Data for 807,553 individuals taken from The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium were used to identify major depressive disorder (MDD). The weighted median, inverse-variance weighting, and Mendelian randomization-Egger methods were used for the Mendelian randomization analysis to estimate a causal effect and detect directional pleiotropy. RESULTS GWAS summary data were obtained from three combined samples, containing 939,908, 413,466 and 807,553 individuals of European ancestry. Mendelian randomization evidence suggested that risk preference increased the onset of BP, and BP also increased risk preference (P < 0.001). In contrast, there were no reliable results to describe the relationship of risk preference with MDD (P > 0.05). Furthermore, there was no significant relationship between MDD and risk preference. CONCLUSION Using large-scale GWAS data, robust evidence supports a mutual relationship between risk preference and BP, but no relationship between risk preference and MDD was observed. This study indicates a potential marker for the early identification of MDD and BP. Additionally, it shows that reducing risk preferences for patients with BP may be a valuable intervention for treating BP.

Abstract
Alexithymia, difficulties in emotion regulation, and negative affect play an important role in adolescents who present pathological gambling. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were, firstly, to analyze the differences between alexithymia, difficulties in emotion regulation, and positive and negative affect in adolescents with and without risk of gambling problems. Secondly, the relationships between all the variables of the study in adolescents with and without risk of problem gambling were analyzed separately. Thirdly, we analyzed the mediating role of positive and negative affect in the relationship between alexithymia and dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies (ERS) in adolescents at risk of gambling problems. The sample was composed of 206 adolescents with ages ranging from 12 to 18 years (M = 15.52; SD = 1.43). They were divided into two groups according to the score obtained in the South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents (SOGS-RA). Thus, 84 were included in the group without risk of gambling problems and 122 in the group at risk of gambling problems. The results obtained revealed higher scores in negative affect and pathological gambling in the group at risk of gambling problems. Likewise, positive relationships between alexithymia, maladaptive emotion regulation strategies (MERS), and affect were found. Mediation analyses showed that difficulties in identifying feelings were indirectly related to greater use of dysfunctional ERS through their relationship with negative affect in at-risk gamblers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The stress-to-disease association has been well-accepted for some time. However, the understanding of how stress exposure contributes to psychological disease progression remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To test the real-time impact of variable stress exposure on risk-related clinical phenomena and affective disease progression in a high-risk sample of active-duty firefighters. METHODS Participants completed weekly diaries reporting stressful event exposure, affect, sleep, and risk-related and healthy behaviors over six-months and were evaluated for lifetime and current psychiatric disease using clinical interviews before and after the sampling period. RESULTS Stress exposure impacted clinical phenomena in differing ways. Major personal events and day-to-day hassles predicted health-impairing shifts in sleep and behavior that were associated with increases in symptoms and psychological distress over the 6-month period. In contrast, highly aversive incidents predicted greater adaptive behaviors that were uniquely predictive of symptom decreases over the six-month period. CONCLUSION These findings shed new light on stress-to-disease processes, demonstrating how variable stress exposure influences critical shifts in behavior and sleep, contributing to psychological adjustment of firefighters over time. These data suggest practical ways to monitor risk in high-risk samples (e.g., monitoring sleep latency) and offer avenues for further explication of disease processes in real time.

Abstract
Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and ecological momentary intervention (EMI) are alternative approaches to retrospective self-reports and face-to-face treatments, and they make it possible to repeatedly assess patients in naturalistic settings and extend psychological support into real life. The increase in smartphone applications and the availability of low-cost wearable biosensors have further improved the potential of EMA and EMI, which, however, have not yet been applied in clinical practice. Here, we conducted a systematic review, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, to explore the state of the art of technology-based EMA and EMI for major depressive disorder (MDD). A total of 33 articles were included (EMA = 26; EMI = 7). First, we provide a detailed analysis of the included studies from technical (sampling methods, duration, prompts), clinical (fields of application, adherence rates, dropouts, intervention effectiveness), and technological (adopted devices) perspectives. Then, we identify the advantages of using information and communications technologies (ICTs) to extend the potential of these approaches to the understanding, assessment, and intervention in depression. Furthermore, we point out the relevant issues that still need to be addressed within this field, and we discuss how EMA and EMI could benefit from the use of sensors and biosensors, along with recent advances in machine learning for affective modelling.

Abstract
Clinical and epidemiological research suggests that behavioral addictions (BA) are associated with a wide range of psychiatric disorders. However, the relationship between BA and bipolar disorders (BD) has not been thoroughly explored. The aim of this systematic review was to critically summarize and evaluate the current available evidence regarding a possible association between BA and BD. A systematic review of major electronic databases according to PRISMA guidelines was conducted from inception to 31st December 2017. We sought quantitative studies data concerning prevalence of comorbidity, features and treatment related to BA-BD comorbidity. Data were narratively synthesized. Of the 1250 studies returned from the search, a total of 28 articles were included in this review. BA may be overrepresented in BD samples, and the other way around. Pathological gambling and kleptomania were the most prevalent conditions followed by compulsive buying, compulsive sexual behavior and internet addiction. BA was also associated with other mood disorders, anxiety disorders and substance use disorder. BD-BA comorbidity was related with more severe course of illness. Studies on treatment strategies for BD-BA comorbidity are rather limited; only one randomized controlled trial that fulfilled inclusion criteria was identified. Methodological heterogeneity in terms of design and results among studies was found. BD-BA commonly co-occurs although there is a need for rigorous studies. Routine screening and adequate assessment may be helpful in BD patients to identify individuals at risk for BA and to effectively manage the complex consequences associated with BA-BD comorbidity.
