Determinants of Subjective Social Status and Health Among Latin American Women Immigrants in Spain: A Qualitative Approach

Association of immigrant status with self-rated health in Spain: 2014-2020

OBJECTIVE

To examine inequalities in self-rated health between immigrant and native populations in 2014 and 2020, and whether these inequalities vary by sex/gender and social support.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study used information from adults aged ≥18 years who participated in the European Health Interview Survey in Spain in 2014 and 2020. Self-rated health was specified as good or bad/poor. Immigration status and length of stay were considered to specify the exposure. Poisson regression was used to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) in each survey. Interaction terms between immigration status and survey; and immigration status, survey, and sex/gender or social support were tested.

RESULTS

The adjusted analyses showed that when compared with Spanish native adults, immigrants with 6-15 years residing in Spain had a 1.34 (95%CI:1.18, 1.53) greater probability of rating their health as bad/poor in 2014. This probability was 1.48 (95%CI:1.28, 1.75) in 2020. No heterogeneity was observed for the associations of immigrant status/length of stay with self-rated health for sex/gender or social support in either survey (p-interactions for sex/gender: 0.41 and social support: 0.71).

CONCLUSION

Given the growth of the immigrant population in Spain and the importance of immigration as a social determinant of health, these findings call attention to a deeper examination of inequalities, with the aim of identifying potential factors leading to bad/poor rating of health over time.

Loneliness and time abroad in Polish migrants in the UK: Protective role of religious experience

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between time spent abroad, level of religious experience, and loneliness in Polish migrants in the UK. Factors differentiating the level of loneliness were migration time (up to one year, from one to five years, and over five years) and religious experience, which was postulated to have a protective function against the level of loneliness experienced. The R-UCLA test was used to verify the level of loneliness, and religious experience was measured with the Religious Experience Scale in participants (N = 200) who were Polish migrants. The results showed that the relationship between time abroad and loneliness is not linear-the highest levels of loneliness were experienced in those who had been living in the UK between one and five years, which is consistent with the observations of Homoncik et al. (2017). Furthermore, the level of religious experience was significantly related to loneliness in that those with high levels of religious experience displayed lower levels of loneliness than those with low levels of religious experience. These results may suggest the need for interventions to raise awareness of potential risks among people with high levels of loneliness.

Perceptions, experiences and barriers to lifestyle modifications in first-generation Middle Eastern immigrants to Sweden: a qualitative study

OBJECTIVE

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among Iraqi immigrants to Sweden is high and partly related to sedentary physical activity and calorie dense food. The aim of the present study was to explore perceptions, experiences and barriers concerning lifestyle modifications (LSM) in Iraqi immigrants to Sweden at risk for T2D.

DESIGN

A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted on data collected from gender-specific focus group interviews which took place during a culturally adapted randomised controlled intervention study addressing motivation to lifestyle change, self-empowerment, behavioural modifications and sociocultural barriers to LSM. Seven focus groups were held, with an interval of 1-4 weeks between January and May of 2015; each session lasted approximately 1.5 hours.

SETTING

The city of Malmö, Sweden.

PARTICIPANTS

Out of 27 women and 23 men assigned to the intervention group, 19 women and 14 men who attended at least one focus group session were included in the study.

RESULTS

Participants expressed awareness of the content of healthy lifestyle practices. They also expressed numerous social and cultural barriers to LSM connected to irregular meals, overeating, food and drinking preferences and family expectations. Overeating was described as a consequence of social and cultural norms and expectations and of poor mental well-being. Facilitators for reaching successful LSM were connected to family involvement and support.

CONCLUSION

Our study reports that facilitators for LSM are connected to presence of family support. Preventive actions addressing family involvement may benefit Middle Eastern immigrants at high risk for T2D to consider healthier lifestyles practices. Identification of sociocultural barriers and facilitators for LSM are crucial for successful health promotion in minority populations at risk for T2D.

Efeitos da crise económica e das políticas de austeridade na saúde e no acesso aos cuidados de saúde da população migrante em países do sul da Europa: revisão scoping

Resumo O objectivo deste artigo é reunir e sintetizar o conhecimento existente sobre o impacto da crise económica e das consequentes políticas de austeridade no estado de saúde e no acesso aos cuidados de saúde das populações migrantes em países do sul da Europa, nomeadamente Portugal, Espanha, Itália e Grécia. Os resultados analisados indicam que a crise económica e as políticas de austeridade tiveram um impacto negativo na saúde e no acesso aos cuidados de saúde dos migrantes em três países, já que não se encontraram dados relativos a Portugal. Os seus efeitos negativos espelham-se na saúde mental, saúde ocupacional, doenças transmissíveis e não transmissíveis, saúde infantil e na perceção subjetiva de saúde. A acessibilidade dos cuidados de saúde tornou-se mais limitada em Espanha, especialmente para a população de imigrantes em situação irregular.

Migration and changes in loneliness over a 4-year period: the case of older former Soviet Union immigrants in Israel

Both older adult and immigrant populations are at a high risk of loneliness. The current research compares older veteran Israelis to older immigrants who arrived in Israel from the former Soviet Union (FSU) after 1989. Early studies have found high levels of loneliness among older FSU immigrants; however, little is known regarding changes in loneliness among this group over time. The present study examines change in loneliness among older FSU immigrants and older veteran Jewish Israelis and its potential predictors. A prospective association between immigrant's status and loneliness over time was examined using the second (2009/2010) and third (2013) waves of SHARE-Israel. The sample consisted of 208 FSU immigrants and 1080 veteran Jewish Israelis. Bivariate analyses indicated that in 2009/2010, older FSU immigrants were significantly lonelier than older veteran Jews, and more disadvantaged on all social and health variables measured. Yet, no significant differences emerged between the two groups with regard to loneliness in 2013. In the adjusted model, older immigrants presented positive change in loneliness (less loneliness over time) compared with veteran Jewish Israelis. Depressive symptoms explained a large part of the variance in change in loneliness. Potential explanations suggest that the long-term psychological adjustment process and the characteristics of the FSU immigrants in Israel as a large and relatively strong immigrant group have served as protective factors with regard to changes in loneliness over time.
