Salen Type Homo-multinuclear Yb3 and Yb4 Complexes and Their NIR Luminescence

The structural manipulation of a series of Ni4 defective dicubanes: Synthesis, X-ray Structures, Magnetic and Computational analyses

We report the synthesis and characterization of four new tetranuclear Ni(ii) complexes, C1-C4, all of which exhibit defective dicubane cores. C1-C4 are derived from the same salicylaldoxime derived ligand, H2L1. Complexes C1 and C4 have isostructural cores, differing in structure only by solvate molecules. Magnetic and computational analyses have revealed that complexes C1, C2, and C4 exhibit competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions, however the different solvated species in C1 and C4 leads to notably different magnitudes in their magnetic coupling constants. Theoretical magneto-structural studies show that the pairwise magnetic exchange interaction is highly dependent on the Ni-X-Ni angle, as revealed by orbital overlap calculations.

Recent Advances of Near-Infrared (NIR) Emissive Metal Complexes Bridged by Ligands with N- and/or O-Donor Sites

Near-infrared (NIR) emissive metal complexes have shown potential applications in optical communication, chemosensors, bioimaging, and laser and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to their structural tunability and luminescence stability. Among them, complexes with bridging ligands that exhibit unique emission behavior have attracted extensive interests in recent years. The target performance can be easily achieved by NIR light-emitting metal complexes with bridging ligands through molecular structure design. In this review, the luminescence mechanism and design strategies of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands are described firstly, and then summarize the recent advance of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands in the fields of electroluminescence and biosensing/bioimaging. Finally, the development trend of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands are proposed, which shows an attractive prospect in the field of photophysical and photochemical materials.

Cathecol and Naphtol Groups in Salphen-Type Schiff Bases for the Preparation of Polynuclear Complexes

In this paper, we show a strategy to modify salphen-type Schiff base ligands with naphtol (SYML1) and pyrocathecol (2,3-dihydroxyphenyl) groups (SYML2), or a combination of both (ASYML). Each of these ligands can be used to obtain polynuclear metal complexes following two different strategies. One relies on using metals that are either too large for the N₂O₂ cavity or not fond of coordination number 4 and the other one relies on forcing the polynuclear species by adding functional groups to the hydroxybenzaldehayde in order to have extra coordination sites in the ligand. We report and characterize the mononuclear complexes SYML1-Cu and SYML1-Ce, along with the dinuclear complex SYML1-Fe and the tetranuclear species SYML2-Mn. The asymmetric ligand ASYML routinely hydrolyzes into the symmetric ligands in the reaction mixtures. SYML1-Fe displays a nearly linear Fe-O-Fe bridge with very strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the Fe(III) ions.
