Dual Responsive (pH and Magnetic) Nanocomposites Based on Fe3O4@Polyaniline/Itaconic Acid: Synthesis, Characterization and Removal of Toxic Hexavalent Chromium from Tannery Wastewater

Stimuli-Responsive Ion Adsorbents for Sustainable Separation Applications

Stimuli-responsive ion absorbents (SRIAs) with reversible ion adsorption and desorption properties have recently attracted immense attention due to their outstanding functionalities for sustainable separation applications. Over the past decade, a series of SRIAs that respond to single or multiple external stimuli (e.g., pH, gas, temperature, light, magnetic, and voltage) have been reported to achieve excellent ion adsorption capacity and selectivity while simultaneously allowing for their reusability. In contrast to traditional adsorbents that are mainly regenerated through chemical additives, SRIAs allow for reduced chemical and even chemical-free regeneration capacities, thereby enabling environmentally friendly and energy-efficient separation technologies. In this review, we systematically summarize the materials and strategies reported to date for synthesizing single-, dual-, and multiresponsive ion adsorbents. Following a discourse on the fundamental mechanisms that govern their adsorption and desorption under various external stimuli, we provide a concise discussion of the regeneration capacity and application of these responsive ion adsorbents for sustainable water desalination, toxic ion removal, and valuable ion extract and recovery. Finally, we discuss the challenges in developing and deploying these promising multifunctional responsive ion adsorbents together with strategies to overcome these limitations and provide prospects for their future.

A review of novel green adsorbents as a sustainable alternative for the remediation of chromium (VI) from water environments

The presence of heavy metal, chromium (VI), in water environments leads to various diseases in humans, such as cancer, lung tumors, and allergies. This review comparatively examines the use of several adsorbents, such as biosorbents, activated carbon, nanocomposites, and polyaniline (PANI), in terms of the operational parameters (initial chromium (VI) concentration (C_o), temperature (T), pH, contact time (t), and adsorbent dosage) to achieve the Langmuir's maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) for chromium (VI) adsorption. The study finds that the use of biosorbents (fruit bio-composite, fungus, leave, and oak bark char), activated carbons (HCl-treated dry fruit waste, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) PEI-KOH alkali-treated rice waste-derived biochar, and KOH/hydrochloric acid (HCl) acid/base-treated commercial), iron-based nanocomposites, magnetic manganese-multiwalled carbon nanotubes nanocomposites, copper-based nanocomposites, graphene oxide functionalized amino acid, and PANI functionalized transition metal are effective in achieving high Langmuir's maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) for chromium (VI) adsorption, and that operational parameters such as initial concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, and adsorbent dosage significantly affect the Langmuir's maximum adsorption capacity (q_m). Magnetic graphene oxide functionalized amino acid showed the highest experimental and pseudo-second-order kinetic model equilibrium adsorption capacities. The iron oxide functionalized calcium carbonate (IO@CaCO₃) nanocomposites showed the highest heterogeneous adsorption capacity. Additionally, Syzygium cumini bark biosorbent is highly effective in treating tannery industrial wastewater with high levels of chromium (VI).

Advances in Sorptive Removal of Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)) in Aqueous Solutions Using Polymeric Materials

Sorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) bears the advantages of simple operation and easy construction. Customized polymeric materials are the attracting adsorbents due to their selectivity, chemical and mechanical stabilities. The mostly investigated polymeric materials for removing Cr(VI) were reviewed in this work. Assembling of robust functional groups, reduction of self-aggregation, and enhancement of stability and mechanical strength, were the general strategies to improve the performance of polymeric adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacities of these polymers toward Cr(VI) fitted by Langmuir isotherm model ranged from 3.2 to 1185 mg/g. Mechanisms of complexation, chelation, reduction, electrostatic attraction, anion exchange, and hydrogen bonding were involved in the Cr(VI) removal. Influence factors on Cr(VI) removal were itemized. Polymeric adsorbents performed much better in the strong acidic pH range (e.g., pH 2.0) and at higher initial Cr(VI) concentrations. The adsorption of Cr(VI) was an endothermic reaction, and higher reaction temperature favored more robust adsorption. Anions inhibited the removal of Cr(VI) through competitive adsorption, while that was barely affected by cations. Factors that affected the regeneration of these adsorbents were summarized. To realize the goal of industrial application and environmental protection, removal of the Cr(VI) accompanied by its detoxication through reduction is highly encouraged. Moreover, development of adsorbents with strong regeneration ability and low cost, which are robust for removing Cr(VI) at trace levels and a wider pH range, should also be an eternally immutable subject in the future. Work done will be helpful for developing more robust polymeric adsorbents and for promoting the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Highly efficient poly(acrylic acid-co-aniline) grafted itaconic acid hydrogel: Application in water retention and adsorption of rhodamine B dye for a sustainable environment

The present study used a free radical co-polymerization approach to synthesize a smart hydrogel of itaconic acid grafted poly(acrylic acid-co-aniline) (ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi)). ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Rhodamine B (RhB) dye was removed from an aqueous medium using ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel. To determine the maximum adsorption, the effect of parameters such as initial dye concentration, contact time, pH, and adsorbent dose were examined. The ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel had a high swelling percentage of 1755.3%. The high water penetration of ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel with a high swelling rate exposed the internal adsorption sites for RhB dye adsorption. The adsorption performance of ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel was explained by the pseudo-first-order and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. Moreover, after four adsorption-desorption cycles, the ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel maintained an adsorption efficiency of 85.2%. The high water retention ability of ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel improved the moisture maintenance limit of soil for irrigation up to 23 days. As a result, ItA-g-poly(AA-co-ANi) hydrogel can be used in the elimination of toxic dyes as well as in irrigation systems.

Phyto-inspired Cu/Bi oxide-based nanocomposites: synthesis, characterization, and energy relevant investigation

A modified and sustainable approach is reported in this research for the synthesis of a spherical-shaped CuO–Bi₂O₃ electrode material for electrochemical studies. Aqueous extract derived from the plant Amaranthus viridis L. (Amaranthaceae) (AVL) was used as a reducing agent for morphological control of the synthesis of CuO–Bi₂O₃ nanocomposites. The modified nanomaterial revealed an average crystal size of 49 ± 2 nm, which matches very well with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) findings. Furthermore, the synthesized material was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission SEM and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The optical band gap energy of 3.45 eV was calculated using a Tauc plot. Finally, the bioorganic framework-derived CuO–Bi₂O₃ electrode was tested for energy generating and storage applications and the results revealed a capacitance of 389 F g⁻¹ by cyclic voltammetry, with a maximum energy density of 12 W h kg⁻¹ and power density of 5 kW kg⁻¹. Hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction studies showed good potential of CuO–Bi₂O₃ as an electrocatalyst for water splitting, with maximum efficiency of the electrode up to 16.5 hours.
