A review on pollutants remediation competence of nanocomposites on contaminated water

Clean freshwater has been required for drinking, sanitation, agricultural activities, and industry, as well as for the development and maintenance of the eco - systems on which all livelihoods rely. Water contamination is currently a significant concern for researchers all over the world; hence it is essential that somehow this issue is resolved as soon as possible. It is now recognised as one of the most important research areas in the world. Current wastewater treatment techniques degrade a wide range of wastewaters efficiently; however, such methods have some limitations. Recently, nanotechnology has emerged as a wonderful solution, and researchers are conducting research in this water remediation field with a variety of potential applications. The pollutants remediation capability of nanocomposites as adsorbents, photocatalysts, magnetic separation, and so on for contaminant removal from contaminated water has been examined in this study. This study has spotlighted the most significant nanocomposites invention reported to date for contaminated and effluent remediation, as well as a research gap as well as possible future perspectives.

Photocatalytic Synthesis of Materials for Regenerative Medicine Using Complex Oxides with β-pyrochlore Structure

Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto cod collagen was carried out under visible light irradiation (λ = 400-700 nm) at 20-25 °C using the RbTe_1.5W_0.5O₆, CsTeMoO₆, and RbNbTeO₆ complex oxides with β-pyrochlore structure as photocatalysts. The as-prepared materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. It was also found that RbNbTeO₆ with β-pyrochlore structure was not able to photocatalyze the reaction. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the obtained graft copolymers proceeds with the formation of peptides with a molecular weight (MW) of about 20 and 10 kDa. In contrast to collagen, which decomposes predominantly to peptides with MW of about 10 kDa, the ratio of fractions with MW of about 10 kDa and 20 kDa differs much less, their changes are symbatic, and the content of polymers with MW of more than 20 kDa is about 70% after 1 h in the case of graft copolymers. The data obtained indicate that synthetic fragments grafted to the collagen macromolecule do not prevent the hydrolysis of the peptide bonds but change the rate of polymer degradation. This is important for creating network matrix scaffolds based on graft copolymers by cross-linking peptides, which are products of enzymatic hydrolysis.

Environmental assessment of wastewater management via hybrid nanocomposite matrix implications-an organized review

Pollution of water is currently a significant worry for scientific communities all over the world, and it is imperative that this problem be solved as quickly as possible. It is today recognized to be one of the most important foci of research worldwide. The present dilemma of clean, fresh waste is being addressed by the subsequent ejection of impurities from polluted water following recycling. There are several effective solutions that have been promoted as a solution to this problem. Even if the present procedures for wastewater treatment degrade a wide variety of effluents efficiently, these protocols still have some kind of restrictions. The most cutting-edge research in this area is being done on the subject of nanotechnology, which has an astounding number of potential uses, one of which is the treatment of wastewater. One of the value-added alternatives utilized for water purification by eliminating the many types of pollutants found in wastewater is the green synthesis of nanocomposites in adsorbents, magnetic separation, photocatalysts, and other similar processes. Within the scope of this study, the most significant discoveries of nanocomposites to date that have been made towards the remediation of wastewater are highlighted.

Copper oxide nanoparticles doped with lanthanum, magnesium and manganese: optical and structural characterization

Copper oxide (Cu₂O) is a promising semiconductor for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications since this material has a high optical absorption coefficient and lower band gap (2.17 eV). Doped lanthanum (La), magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn) Cu₂O nanoparticles (Cu₂O Nps) were prepared by a displacement reaction. The doped and undoped Cu₂O Nps were characterized with scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The EDS results confirm the presence of La, Mg and Mn in the Cu₂O Nps. The XRD results confirm the formation a single cubic phase of Cu₂O with a cuprite structure. TEM images confirm the formation of Nps with mean diameters between 12.0 ± 6.1 and 30.8 ± 11.0 nm. Doped and undoped Nps present a narrow band gap (2.40 eV), blue shifted with respect to bulk Cu₂O.

Core-shell magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer for selective recognition and detection of sunset yellow in aqueous environment and real samples

Magnetic Molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) have been recently recognized as an exceptional tool for monitoring and decontamination of environmental and biological samples of diverse nature. Based on the potential applications as sorbents and biomimetic sensors, herein, a core-shell magnetic-molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was developed as a selective material for separation and sensing of sunset yellow (SY) dye in an aqueous environment and real samples. The MMIP was synthesized via precipitation polymerization using SY as a template, MAA as a functional monomer (chosen based on simulation studies), EGDMA as a cross-linking agent, and AIBN as an initiator. To elaborate the specificity of MMIP, a comparative agent, magnetic non-imprinted polymer (MNIP) was also synthesized. The XRD results showed that the MMIP showed both crystalline and amorphous structure attributed to the presence and polymeric and non-polymeric groups. The FTIR spectra confirmed synthesis of intermediate and final MMIP product. The SEM results showed spherical morphology and porous structure of the MMIP with an average particle size of 0.636 μm in diameter. The MMIP was first employed as a sorbent for the removal of SY from the aqueous environment. The binding experiments performed at optimized operating conditions (pH 2; time 30 min; sorbent dosage 3 mg; sorbate concentration 80 ppm) showed more selectivity when compared with MNIP. The data fitted best to Langmuir's sorption isotherm (Q_o 359.8 mg/g) and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The synthesized MMIP was also used as an electrochemical sensor for detection of SY dye in the aqueous environment, which exhibited a linear range of detection as (1.51 × 10^-6 - 1.5 × 10^-3 M). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found to be 0.00413 M and 0.0137 M, respectively. While the R² value was found to be 0.997 at optimized analytical conditions. These results suggested that the synthesized MMIP can be applied for the selective separation and quantification of SY dye in sample of diverse nature.

Nanoadsorbents in focus for the remediation of environmentally-related contaminants with rising toxicity concerns

Modern lifestyle demands high-end commodities, for instance, cosmetics, detergents, shampoos, household cleaning, sanitary items, medicines, and so forth. In recent years, these products' consumption has increased considerably, being antibiotics and some other pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs). Several antibiotics and PPCPs represent a wide range of emerging contaminants with a straight ingress into aquatic systems, given their high persistence in seawater, effluent treatment plants, and even drinking water. Under these considerations, the necessity of developing new and affordable technologies for the treatment and sustainable mitigation of pollutants is highly requisite for a safer and cleaner environment. One possible mitigation solution is an effective deployment of nanotechnological cues as promising matrices that can contribute by attending issues and improving the current strategies to detect, prevent, and mitigate hazardous pollutants in water. Focused on nanoparticles' distinctive physical and chemical properties, such as high surface area, small size, and shape, metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been investigated for water remediation. MNPs gained increasing interest among research groups due to their superior efficiency, stability, and high catalyst activity compared with conventional systems. This review summarizes the occurrence of antibiotics and PPCPs and the application of MNPs as pollutant mitigators in the aquatic environment. The work also focuses on transportation fate, toxicity, and current regulations for environmental safety.

Zirconium-Doped Chromium IV Oxide Nanocomposites: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photocatalysis towards the Degradation of Organic Dyes

Degradation of organic dyes and their byproducts by heterogeneous photocatalysts is an essential process, as these dyes can be potentially discharged in wastewater and threaten aquatic and xerophyte life. Therefore, their complete mineralization into nontoxic components (water and salt) is necessary through the process of heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this study, Zr/CrO2 (Zirconium-doped chromium IV oxide) nanocomposite-based photocatalysts with different compositions (1, 3, 5, 7 & 9 wt.%) were prepared by an environmentally friendly, solid-state reaction at room temperature. The as-prepared samples were calcined under air at 450 °C in a furnace for a specific period of time. The synthesis of Zr/CrO2 photocatalysts was confirmed by various techniques, including XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and BET. The photocatalytic properties of all samples were tested towards the degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange organic dyes under UV light. The results revealed a concentration-dependent photocatalytic activity of photocatalysts, which increased the amount of dopant (up to 5 wt.%). However, the degradation efficiency of the catalysts decreased upon further increasing the amount of dopant due to the recombination of holes and photoexcited electrons.

Enhanced Osseointegration by the Hierarchical Micro-Nano Topography on Selective Laser Melting Ti-6Al-4V Dental Implants

Currently, selective laser melting (SLM) has been thriving in implant dentistry for on-demand fabricating dental implants. Based on the coarse microtopography of SLM titanium surfaces, constructing nanostructure to form the hierarchical micro-nano topography is effective in enhancing osseointegration. Given that current nanomodification techniques of SLM implants, such as anodization and hydrothermal treatment, are facing the inadequacy in costly specific apparatus and reagents, there has been no recognized nanomodified SLM dental implants. The present study aimed to construct hierarchical micro-nano topography on self-made SLM dental implants by a simple and safe inorganic chemical oxidation, and to evaluate its contribution on osteoblastic cells bioactivity and osseointegration. The surface chemical and physical parameters were characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, profilometer, AFM, and contact angle meter. The alteration on bioactivity of MG-63 human osteoblastic cells were detected by qRT-PCR. Then the osseointegration was assessed by implanting implants on the femur condyle of New Zealand Rabbits. The hierarchical micro-nano topography was constituted by the microrough surface of SLM implants and nanoneedles (diameter: 20∼50 nm, height: 150∼250 nm), after nanomodifying SLM implants in 30% hydrogen peroxide and 30% hydrochloride acid (volume ratio 1:2.5) at room temperature for 36 h. Low chemical impurities content and high hydrophilicity were observed in the nanomodified group. Cell experiments on the nanomodified group showed higher expression of mitophagy related gene (PINK1, PARKIN, LC3B, and LAMP1) at 5 days and higher expression of osteogenesis related gene (Runx2 and OCN) at 14 days. In the early stage of bone formation, the nanomodified SLM implants demonstrated higher bone-to-implant contact. Intriguingly, the initial bone-to-implant contact of nanomodified SLM implants consisted of more mineralized bone with less immature osteoid. After the cessation of bone formation, the bone-to-implant contact of nanomodified SLM implants was equal to untreated SLM implants and marketable TixOs implants. The overall findings indicated that the inorganic chemical oxidized hierarchical micro-nano topography could enhance the bioactivity of osteoblastic cells, and consequently promote the peri-implant bone formation and mineralization of SLM dental implants. This study sheds some light on improvements in additive manufactured dental implants.
