Web Based Health Education, E-learning, for Weight Management

Use of a web-based educational intervention to improve knowledge of healthy diet and lifestyle in women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus compared to standard clinic-based education

Background

This study introduced a web-based educational intervention for Australian women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The aim was to improve knowledge on healthy diet and lifestyle in GDM. Evaluation of the intervention explored women’s knowledge and understanding of GDM, healthy diet, healthy food, and healthy lifestyle, after using the web-based program compared to women receiving standard clinic-based GDM education.

Methods

A total of 116 women, aged 18–45 years old, newly diagnosed with GDM, participated (Intervention (n) = 56 and control (n) = 60). Women were randomly allocated to the intervention or control groups and both groups attended a standard GDM education class. Group 1(Intervention) additionally used an online touch screen/computer program. All women completed a questionnaire following the computer program and/or the education class. All questions evaluating levels of knowledge had more than one correct answer and scores were graded from 0 to 1, with each correct component receiving a score, eg. 0.25 per each correct answer in a 4 answer question. Chi-square test was performed to compare the two groups regarding knowledge of GDM.

Results

Findings indicated that the majority of women in the intervention group reported correct answers for “types of carbohydrate foods” for pregnant women with GDM, compared to the control group (62.5 % vs 58.3 %, respectively). Most women in both groups had an excellent understanding of “fruits and vegetables” (98.2 % vs 98.3 %), and the majority of women in the intervention group understood that they should exercise daily for 30 min, compared to the control group (92.9 % vs 91.7 %). Both groups had a good understanding across all categories, however, the majority of women in the intervention group scored all correct answers (score = 1) in term of foetal effects (17.9 % vs 13.3 %, respectively), maternal predictors (5.4 % vs 5 %), care requirements (39.3 % vs 23.3 %), GDM perceptions (48.2 % vs 46.7 %) and GDM treatment (67.9 % vs 61.7 %), compared to women in the control group.

Conclusion

The study suggested that both approaches, standard education and standard education plus web-based program, resulted in excellent knowledge scores, but not statistically significant difference between groups. Multiple and immediate access to the web-based education program at home may prove useful as a source of reference for women with GDM. Future study comparing results pre and post intervention is needed.

Usability of a web-based personal nutrition management tool

'Personal Nutrition Management Tool' (PENUMAT) is an interactive web-based application which aims to help individuals seeking nutrition information on the Internet. However, little is known about the usability of such applications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usability of PENUMAT using multi-method approach. For an in-depth usability analysis, using a multi-method approach involving protocol analysis, interviews and a system usability scale (SUS) was adopted. The sample consisted of 10 healthy (five males and five females) volunteers between the ages of 22 and 60. The overall usability score was calculated; usability problems and users' opinions were obtained. All usability problems were classified according to the heuristics and listed with their frequencies. Overall, the usability score ranged from 77.5 to 100, with a median of 88.7. In-depth usability analysis exposed several usability problems mostly related to content, navigation and interactivity. Interview results showed that 'being personal and private' (70%) and 'providing personal feedbacks' (60%) were the most appreciated characteristics of the tool. Although the tool has an acceptable overall usability score, several unnoticed usability problems of the interface design were realised with the in-depth analysis. Therefore, the importance of using a multi-method analysis of usability was pointed out.

Engagement in E-learning opportunities: an empirical study on patient education using expectation confirmation theory

Medical e-learning technology is widely employed to create an online platform for patients and healthcare providers alike. However, there are few studies that have investigated the reasons why some users reject e-learning technology usage after their initial experience. This study was conducted with the aim to better understand the factors leading to patients' continued usage of e-learning technologies. The theoretical foundation was based on the expectation-confirmation theory (ECT). The questionnaire survey was conducted during a two-month period and covered a total sample of 281 outpatients in a regional-teaching hospital. We found that the intention to continue e-learning usage was significantly related to patients' education level, expectation, perceived performance, confirmation and satisfaction. The use of this ECT model may provide administrators in the healthcare industry insights into the implementation of e-learning technologies. This research also opens up a new direction and enhances the completeness of related researches in the fields of medical informatics and health education.

Applying non-synchronized e-learning to the nursing clinical ladder system

The time and spatial constraints of face-to-face learning often affect nursing staff's inclination to enroll in ladder system training classes. Hence, their competence in clinical care may be unable to meet the requirements of the hospitals they work at. The e-learning mechanism offers a way to overcome such constraints. However, the differences in learners' achievement and satisfaction between traditional face-to-face and non-synchronized e-learning classes in the nursing clinical ladder system have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, 155 nursing personnel serving at the case hospital, enrolled in N1/N2 ladder courses, were invited to participate as the subjects. The results showed that those who attended face-to-face learning classes reported higher satisfaction but achieved less in class than those in the e-learning class. The factors which influence the subjects' satisfaction with e-learning were investigated and summarized.
