A New Feature Detection Mechanism and Its Application in Secured ECG Transmission with Noise Masking

A joint application of optimal threshold based discrete cosine transform and ASCII encoding for ECG data compression with its inherent encryption

In this paper, a joint use of the discrete cosine transform (DCT), and differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) based quantization is presented for predefined quality controlled electrocardiogram (ECG) data compression. The formulated approach exploits the energy compaction property in transformed domain. The DPCM quantization has been applied to zero-sequence grouped DCT coefficients that were optimally thresholded via Regula-Falsi method. The generated sequence is encoded using Huffman coding. This encoded series is further converted to a valid ASCII code using the standard codebook for transmission purpose. Such a coded series possesses inherent encryption capability. The proposed technique is validated on all 48 records of standard MIT-BIH database using different measures for compression and encryption. The acquisition time has been taken in accordance to that existed in literature for the fair comparison with contemporary state-of-art approaches. The chosen measures are (1) compression ratio (CR), (2) percent root mean square difference (PRD), (3) percent root mean square difference without base (PRD1), (4) percent root mean square difference normalized (PRDN), (5) root mean square (RMS) error, (6) signal to noise ratio (SNR), (7) quality score (QS), (8) entropy, (9) Entropy score (ES) and (10) correlation coefficient (r _x,y ). Prominently the average values of CR, PRD and QS were equal to 18.03, 1.06, and 17.57 respectively. Similarly, the mean encryption metrics i.e. entropy, ES and r _x,y were 7.9692, 0.9962 and 0.0113 respectively. The novelty in combining the approaches is well justified by the values of these metrics that are significantly higher than the comparison counterparts.

Effective Electrocardiogram Steganography Based on Coefficient Alignment

This study presents two types of data hiding methods based on coefficient alignment for electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, namely, lossy and reversible ECG steganographys. The lossy method is divided into high-quality and high-capacity ECG steganography, both of which are capable of hiding confidential patient data in ECG signals. The reversible data hiding method can not only hide secret messages but also completely restore the original ECG signal after bit extraction. Simulations confirmed that the perceived quality generated by the lossy ECG steganography methods was good, while hiding capacity was acceptable. In addition, these methods have a certain degree of robustness, which is rare in conventional ECG stegangraphy schemes. Moreover, the proposed reversible ECG steganography method can not only successfully extract hidden messages but also completely recover the original ECG data.

Discrete wavelet transform and singular value decomposition based ECG steganography for secured patient information transmission

ECG Steganography provides secured transmission of secret information such as patient personal information through ECG signals. This paper proposes an approach that uses discrete wavelet transform to decompose signals and singular value decomposition (SVD) to embed the secret information into the decomposed ECG signal. The novelty of the proposed method is to embed the watermark using SVD into the two dimensional (2D) ECG image. The embedding of secret information in a selected sub band of the decomposed ECG is achieved by replacing the singular values of the decomposed cover image by the singular values of the secret data. The performance assessment of the proposed approach allows understanding the suitable sub-band to hide secret data and the signal degradation that will affect diagnosability. Performance is measured using metrics like Kullback-Leibler divergence (KL), percentage residual difference (PRD), peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and bit error rate (BER). A dynamic location selection approach for embedding the singular values is also discussed. The proposed approach is demonstrated on a MIT-BIH database and the observations validate that HH is the ideal sub-band to hide data. It is also observed that the signal degradation (less than 0.6%) is very less in the proposed approach even with the secret data being as large as the sub band size. So, it does not affect the diagnosability and is reliable to transmit patient information.

Reconstruction of ECG signals in presence of corruption

We present an approach to identifying and reconstructing corrupted regions in a multi-parameter physiological signal. The method, which uses information in correlated signals, is specifically designed to preserve clinically significant aspects of the signals. We use template matching to jointly segment the multi-parameter signal, morphological dissimilarity to estimate the quality of the signal segment, similarity search using features on a database of templates to find the closest match, and time-warping to reconstruct the corrupted segment with the matching template. In experiments carried out on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database, a two-parameter database with many clinically significant arrhythmias, our method improved the classification accuracy of the beat type by more than 7 times on a signal corrupted with white Gaussian noise, and increased the similarity to the original signal, as measured by the normalized residual distance, by more than 2.5 times.
