Abstract
BACKGROUND Musculoskeletal injuries can cause distress, and distress is associated with delayed recovery. Numerous interventions have been developed to facilitate recovery from injury, and several systematic reviews evaluate the efficacy of these interventions for reducing psychological distress. OBJECTIVES This scoping review aims to map the synthesised evidence for the relationship between treatment interventions and distress-related outcomes following acute injury. The objectives were (1) to describe the types of interventions that have been evaluated in relation to distress-related outcomes following accidental injury, (2) to examine the scope of distress-related outcomes that have been measured in relation to these interventions and (3) to explore the range of clinical professions that deliver these interventions. DESIGN We searched nine electronic databases and grey literature (to 21 April 2022). We included any systematic review reporting on the relationship between interventions delivered in the time following injury and distress-related outcomes. Data relevant to the specific objectives of this scoping review were extracted and described using narrative synthesis. RESULTS From 8412 systematic reviews imported for screening, 8266 unique records were screened. 179 were selected for full-text review. 84 systematic reviews were included in the study. Interventional types were pharmacological, psychological, exercise based, physical/manual therapies, virtual reality based, multimodal and workplace based. Interventions were delivered digitally, face to face and using virtual reality by a variety of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, psychologists and physiotherapists. The most frequently reported distress-related variables included anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosis. CONCLUSION A wide range of interventions may help to mitigate distress following acute accidental musculoskeletal or orthopaedic injury. Even interventions that were not designed to reduce distress were found to improve distress-related outcomes. In view of the important role of distress in recovery from injury, it is recommended that distress-related variables are measured as core outcomes in the evaluation of treatments for acute injuries.

Abstract
PURPOSE Many countries have developed clinical decision-making support tools, such as the smart work injury management (SWIM) system in Hong Kong, to predict rehabilitation paths and address global issues related to work injury disability. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of SWIM by comparing its predictions on real work injury cases to those made by human case managers, specifically with regard to the duration of sick leave and the percentage of permanent disability. METHODS The study analyzed a total of 442 work injury cases covering the period from 2012 to 2020, dividing them into non-litigated and litigated cases. The Kruskal-Wallis post hoc test with Bonferroni adjustment was used to evaluate the differences between the actual data, the SWIM predictions, and the estimations made by three case managers. The intra-class correlation coefficient was used to assess the inter-rater reliability of the case managers. RESULTS The study discovered that the predictions made by the SWIM model and a case manager possessing approximately 4 years of experience in case management exhibited moderate reliability in non-litigated cases. Nevertheless, there was no resemblance between SWIM's predictions regarding the percentage of permanent disability and those made by case managers. CONCLUSION The findings indicate that SWIM is capable of replicating the sick leave estimations made by a case manager with an estimated 4 years of case management experience, albeit with limitations in generalizability owing to the small sample size of case managers involved in the study. IMPLICATIONS These findings represent a significant advancement in enhancing the accuracy of CDMS for work injury cases in Hong Kong, signaling progress in the field.

Abstract
PURPOSE Investigate components of care for rotator cuff related shoulder pain in workers' compensation in relation to claim outcomes (claim duration, total medical spend, total claim cost, return to work outcome). METHODS Engagement with (had care, time to care) four components of care (prescribed exercise, imaging, injections, surgery) were obtained from auditing 189 closed workers' compensation files. Associations were analysed between components of care and claim outcomes. RESULTS 80% received prescribed exercise, 81% imaging, 42% injection and 35% surgery. Median time to imaging (11 days) was shorter than the prescribed exercise (27 days), with injection at 38 days and surgery 118.5 days. With univariable regression analysis higher age, the involvement of legal representation and the presence of rotator cuff pathology from diagnostic imaging (partial thickness tear or full thickness tear) were all associated with increased claim duration, total medical spend, total claim cost and less successful return to work outcomes. After adjusting for these three associations, having an injection or surgery were both positively associated with longer claim duration and greater medical spend, and surgery with greater total claim costs. In general, longer time to receiving components of care was associated with increased claim duration and reduced odds of returning to full duties at work. CONCLUSION Early management was not consistent with clinical guidelines for managing workers' compensation rotator cuff related shoulder pain. This may negatively affect claims outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose This study investigates the impact of an intensive case management program on sick leave days, permanent work incapacity levels and treatment costs for severe vocational injuries set up by the French National Insurance Fund in five health insurance districts. Methods The method employed relies on a four-step matching procedure combining Coarsened Exact Matching and Propensity Score Matching, based on an original administrative dataset. Average Treatment effects on the Treated were estimated using a parametric model with a large set of covariates. Results After one-year follow-up, workers in the treatment group had higher sickness absence rates, with 22 extra days, and the program led to 2.7 (95% CI 2.3-3.1) times more diagnoses of permanent work incapacity in the treatment group. With an estimated yearly operational cost of 2,722 € per treated worker, the average total extra treatment cost was 4,569 € for treated workers, which corresponds to a cost increase of 29.2% for the insurance fund. Conclusions The higher costs found for the treatment group are mainly due to longer sick leave duration for the moderate severity group, implying higher cash transfers in the form of one-off indemnities. Even though workers in the treated group have more diagnoses of permanent work incapacity, the difference of severity between groups is small. Our results on longer sick leave duration are partly to be explained by interactions between the case managers and the occupational physicians that encouraged patients to stay longer off-work for better recovery, despite the higher costs that this represented for the insurance fund and the well-documented adverse side effects of longer periods off-work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Case management interventions have shown to be effective to prevent musculoskeletal pain and disability, but a single definition has not been achieved, nor an agreed profile for case managers. OBJECTIVE To describe the elements that define case management and case managers tasks for return-to-work of workers with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). METHODS A comprehensive computerized search of articles published in English until February 16, 2021 was carried out in several bibliographic databases. Grey literature was obtained through a search of 13 key websites. A peer-review screening of titles and abstracts was carried out. Full text in-depth analysis of the selected articles was performed for data extraction and synthesis of results. RESULTS We identified 2,422 documents. After full-text screening 31 documents were included for analysis. These were mostly European and North American and had an experimental design. Fifteen documents were published between 2010 to 2021 and of these 7 studies were published from 2015. Fifteen elements were identified being the commonest "return-to-work programme" (44.4%) and "multidisciplinary assessment/interdisciplinary intervention" (44.4%). Of 18 tasks found, the most frequent was "establishing goals and planning return-to-work rehabilitation" (57.7%). Eighteen referral services were identified. CONCLUSIONS Despite there were several elements frequently reported, some elements with scientific evidence of their importance to deal with MSDs (e.g. early return-to-work) were almost not mentioned. This study proposes key points for the description of case management and case managers tasks.

Abstract
Identifying who might develop disabling pain or poor mental health after injury is a high priority so that healthcare providers can provide targeted preventive interventions. This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify predictors of disabling pain or probable mental health conditions at 12 months post-injury. Participants were recruited 12-months after admission to a major trauma service for a compensable transport or workplace injury (n = 157). Injury, compensation claim, health services and medication information were obtained from the Victorian Orthopaedic Trauma Outcome Registry, Victorian State Trauma Registry and Compensation Research Database. Participants completed questionnaires about pain, and mental health (anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder) at 12 months post-injury. One third had disabling pain, one third had at least one probable mental health condition and more than one in five had both disabling pain and a mental health condition at 12 months post-injury. Multivariable logistic regression found mental health treatment 3-6 months post-injury, persistent work disability and opioid use at 6-12 months predicted disabling pain at 12 months post-injury. The presence of opioid use at 3-6 months, work disability and psychotropic medications at 6-12 months predicted a mental health condition at 12 months post-injury. These factors could be used to identify at risk of developing disabling pain who could benefit from timely interventions to better manage both pain and mental health post-injury. Implications for healthcare and compensation system are discussed.

Abstract
Objective This study determined if partial sick leave was associated with a shorter duration of sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) based on routinely collected health data in Dutch sick-listed employees. Furthermore, the effect of timing of partial sick leave on sick leave duration was determined. Methods This cohort study consisted of 771 employees with partial sick leave and 198 employees with full-time sick leave who participated in an occupational health check, and had sick leave due to MSD for minimally 4 weeks and were diagnosed by an occupational physician. Multivariable linear regression models were performed to determine the effects of partial sick leave (unadjusted and adjusted for confounders and MSD diagnosis) and Kaplan-Meier curves were presented for visualization of return to work for different timings of starting partial sick leave. Furthermore, linear regression analysis were done in subsets of employees with different minimal durations of sick leave to estimate the effects of timing of partial sick leave. Results Initial results suggest that partial sick leave was associated with longer sick leave duration, also when adjusted for confounders and sick leave diagnosis. Secondary results which accounted for the timing of partial sick leave suggest that partial sick leave had no effect on the duration of sick leave. Conclusion Partial sick leave does not influence MSD sick leave duration in this study when accounting for the timing of partial sick leave.

Abstract
Purpose The aim was to develop a tool to be applied by workers' compensation case managers to guide intervention and avoid delayed return to work. Methods The Plan of Action for a CasE (PACE) tool was developed based on a review of existing literature, focus groups with case managers and analysis of existing claims data. Combined with analysis of existing case manager practice, these sources were used to determine key constructs for inclusion in the tool to be aligned with the demands of case manager workload. Mapping of existing interventions was used to match risk identified by the tool with appropriate intervention. Results The final PACE tool consisted of 41 questions divided into Ready (worker), Set (employer) and Go (treating practitioner) categories. Questions in the tool were linked to appropriate case manager actions. Data collection was completed by case managers for 524 claims within the first 2 weeks of the claim being accepted. The most commonly identified risks for delayed RTW included both worker and employer expectations of RTW, as well as certification of capacity. Factor analysis identified two factors operating across the tool categories. Case managers reported benefits in using the tool, but reported it also increased their workload. Conclusions The PACE tool is a unique example of the implementation of risk identification in case management practice. It demonstrates that case managers are ideally placed to collect information to identify risk of delayed RTW. Abstract
BACKGROUND In return-to-work (RTW) programs, coordinators are often provided in order to integrate services. However, models of coordinating services vary widely internationally, and across different programs, where one distinction is between vertical and horizontal integration (i.e. between levels/institutions, or within one service/level). The aim of this study was therefore to explore and describe if and how a coordinator was provided in RTW-programs, and whether the provision of a coordinator was associated with certain personal or intervention characteristics. METHODS The study was designed as a cohort study following employees participating in a variety of Rapid-RTW-programs in Norway (n = 39). Employees (n = 494) answered a self-administered questionnaire, which was linked to register-data on diagnoses and sickness-absence. Employees who replied yes/no to the question "Did the program provide a person who tailored or coordinated your services?" were included in this analysis. Associations for being provided with a coordinator were tested in adjusted logistic regression models. RESULTS Sixty-nine percent of the employees reported having a coordinator. These coordinators were mainly responsible for coordinating treatment within own programs (i.e. horizontal coordination, 68%). As expected, rehabilitation programs more often provided a coordinator compared to treatment programs (OR 3.87 95% CI 2.42-6.24). The odds for being provided with a coordinator were reduced for each additional year of age of the employee (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.96-0.99). More professions were involved in programs that provided coordinators, also more contact with other stakeholders like leaders and social insurance services (NAV), but only contact with supervisor remained statistically significant in adjusted analysis (OR 1.69 95% CI 0.31-9.27). The programs with a coordinator more often provided adaptations at the workplace for the individual employee (OR 0.08 95% CI 0.01-0.60). However, these signs of vertical integration were only evident for a limited number of employees. CONCLUSION In this study, seven of ten employees reported to have a coordinator, which was associated with more professions and stakeholder involvement in the RTW-process. Most of these coordinators did not coordinate vertically between the service levels and types of intervention arenas for sick listed employees (i.e. workplace, social security, and health care services), as recommended in earlier research.

Abstract
The workplace can provide opportunities to support workers in adopting and sustaining health enhancing behaviours. Health promotion programs based at the workplace need not only to achieve this goal but also the continuing support of the employers. This can best be achieved by demonstrating a return on their investment. The aim of this study therefore was to develop an integrated workplace health management program which could be associated with measurable outcomes related to benefitting the institution's "bottom line". This program was based in a metropolitan surgical hospital in Melbourne, Australia from 2006 to 2010 with a total workforce of 1400 employees aged 18-74 years (86% female 14% male), The program followed two key principles of 1) building safe and familiar support networks in order to build a workplace culture where all the workers felt valued. 2) Providing time for individual workers to focus on themselves as a means to achieve early intervention and management of injuries. Insurance data generated by the Workers Compensation Authority identified the following 'bottom line' benefits over three years: injury management costs reduced by 56%; number of compensation Injury claims dropped by 46%; time to return to work post injury reduced by 68%, and; a reduction. in premiums of 43% achieved over a six-year period. Insurers world-wide calculate workers' compensation insurance premiums on injury claims history. It is concluded that such data as these can offer a reliable and 'persuasive' measure of health and injury outcomes, in workplace interventions of this nature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of very early access to physical therapy and specialty care management in a workers' compensation population. METHODS A prospective pilot (n = 75) was conducted from 2012 to 2013 in which injured workers with musculoskeletal complaints received physical therapy and started care management during their initial occupational medicine clinic visit. Two retrospective comparator groups with workers' compensation claims from 2009 and 2012 were included in this study. RESULTS When comparing 2009 data with the 2012 to 2013 prospective pilot study, statistically significant differences were noted in favor of the prospective pilot for total costs per claim, cost of indemnity, number of therapy visits, and time to access physical therapy. When compared with the 2012 nonpilot cohort, differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Expedited access to physical therapy and care management can reduce duration of care, cost of claims, and therapy visits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insurance workers and physiotherapists are important stakeholders in the rehabilitation of workers with an injury and subsequent musculoskeletal pain. Understanding perceptions of roles may facilitate communication between these stakeholders. OBJECTIVE Increase knowledge around, (i) the self-perception of and (ii) the external perception of the insurance workers and physiotherapists roles in the management of a worker with an injury in an Australian workers' compensation environment. METHODS A cross-sectional study assessed the perceptions of insurance workers and physiotherapists related to the roles of these two professions in managing a worker with an injury via questionnaire. Respondents were also asked about potential communication barriers. RESULTS Insurance workers (n = 48) and physiotherapists (n = 80) reported contrasting role perceptions, with their perception of the other profession leaning towards negative attributes. There was greater alignment of their beliefs of roles in the 'ideal' situation. The perception of barriers to communication also differed between the two professions. Effective and efficient communication was identified as a central component of mismatched role perceptions between stakeholders, but recognised as a critical attribute of 'ideal' stakeholder roles. CONCLUSION Insurance workers and physiotherapists self-perception of their roles differs from external perceptions. This information highlights the importance of a shared understanding of stakeholder roles in the management of a worker with an injury.

Abstract
Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of early multidisciplinary interventions in promoting work participation and reducing work absence in adults with regional musculoskeletal pain. Data sources: Seven databases (CENTRAL, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Scopus, OT Seeker, PEDro; 1990 to December 2016) were searched for eligible studies. Review methods: Trials were included if they reported on work-based outcomes for participants experiencing difficulties at work or ≤ three months’ sick leave. Interventions had to include two or more elements of the biopsychosocial model delivered as a coordinated programme. Quality was assessed using the GRADE criteria. Results were analysed by hazard ratios for return to work data; continuous outcomes were analysed as standardised mean difference with 95% confidence intervals. Results: A total of 20 randomized controlled trials, with 16,319 participants were included; the interventions were grouped according to their main components for meta-analyses. At 12-months follow-up, moderate quality evidence suggests that programmes involving a stepped care approach (four studies) were more effective than the comparisons in promoting return to work (hazard ratio (HR) 1.29 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03 to 1.61), p = 0.03), whereas case management (two studies) was not (HR 0.92 (95% CI 0.69 to 1.24), p = 0.59). Analyses suggested limited effectiveness in reducing sickness absences, in pain reduction or functional improvement across the intervention categories. Conclusion: There is uncertainty as to the effectiveness of early multicomponent interventions owing to the clinical heterogeneity and varying health and social insurance systems across the trials.

Abstract
Introduction The aim of this study is to determine whether a workplace-based early intervention injury prevention program reduces work-related musculoskeletal compensation outcomes in poultry meat processing workers. Methods A poultry meatworks in Queensland, Australia implemented an onsite early intervention which included immediate reporting and triage, reassurance, multidisciplinary participatory consultation, workplace modifica tion and onsite physiotherapy. Secondary pre-post analyses of the meatworks' compensation data over 4 years were performed, with the intervention commencing 2 years into the study period. Outcome measures included rate of claims, costs per claim and work days absent at an individual claim level. Where possible, similar analyses were performed on data for Queensland's poultry meat processing industry (excluding the meatworks used in this study). Results At the intervention meatworks, in the post intervention period an 18 % reduction in claims per 1 million working hours (p = 0.017) was observed. Generalized linear modelling revealed a significant reduction in average costs per claim of $831 (OR 0.74; 95 % CI 0.59-0.93; p = 0.009). Median days absent was reduced by 37 % (p = 0.024). For the poultry meat processing industry over the same period, generalized linear modelling revealed no significant change in average costs per claim (OR 1.02; 95 % CI 0.76-1.36; p = 0.91). Median days absent was unchanged (p = 0.93). Conclusion The introduction of an onsite, workplace-based early intervention injury prevention program demonstrated positive effects on compensation outcomes for work-related musculoskeletal disorders in poultry meat processing workers. Prospective studies are needed to confirm the findings of the present study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study examined the relationship between onsite occupational health practice characteristics, provider choice, and workers' compensation outcome metrics. METHODS Cross-sectional survey of 140 medical center occupational health clinics within the Department of Veterans Affairs. Multivariate regression models examined how specific clinical quality factors influenced provider choice and workers' compensation measures. RESULTS Several practice characteristics were associated with higher rates of in-house care selection-longer hours of operation, greater availability of workers' compensation-related medical services, clinic administration by a board certified physician, physician tenure, and adherence to clinical practice guidelines. Access to onsite, occupational and environmental medicine certified physician-directed care was associated with reductions in disability duration among injured healthcare workers. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that occupational medicine board certification can positively impact provider choice among fully insured patients, which may have implications for other healthcare systems.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Workstyle as it is related to symptoms of musculoskeletal symptoms of the upper limbs is the behavioural, cognitive and physical responses that occur in individuals to increases in work demands. A self report measure of this construct was developed that was both associated with and predictive of work related upper extremity symptoms. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt, and validate a Chinese version of the Workstyle Short Form (C-WSF). METHODS The C-WSF was translated following a forward and backward translation approach. Content validity was examined by item- and scale-level content validity indices. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to analyze test-retest reliability. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify factor structures and the internal consistency of these factors was assessed by calculating Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficients. The construct validity of the C-WSF was first determined by convergence in relation to the Cumulative Symptoms Score for Upper Extremity symptoms and then by comparison of those with and without upper extremity pain in Chinese cooks, a work with a high level of exposures to varying levels of work demands coupled with exposure to workplace psychosocial and biomechanical stressors. RESULTS The C-WSF demonstrated excellent item- and scale-level content validity index (>0.9). The factor structure of C-WSF was similar to its original English version. The internal consistency of different subscales of C-WSF ranged from 0.65 to 0.91. The ICC was between 0.79 and 0.93 indicating good test-retest reliability. C-WSF was significantly correlated with upper extremity symptoms (r = 0.34, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS C-WSF is a reliable and valid version of the Workstyle measures for use in Chinese population.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study sought to provide an overview of the main topics and trends in contemporary research on successful non-clinical interventions for preventing prolonged work disability in workers compensated for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs). METHODS A systematic electronic search (English and French) was performed in ten scientific databases using keywords and descriptors. After screening the identified titles and abstracts using specific sets of criteria, categorical and thematic analyses were performed on the retained articles. RESULTS Five main topics appear to dominate the research: (1) risk factors and determinants; (2) effectiveness of interventions (programmes, specific components, strategies and policies); (3) viewpoints, experiences and perceptions of specific actors involved in the intervention process; (4) compensation issues; and (5) measurement issues. A currently widespread trend is early screening to identify risks factors for appropriate intervention and multidisciplinary, multimodal approaches. Morover, workplace-related psychosocial and ergonomic factors are considered vital to the success and sustainability of return-to-work (RTW) interventions. Finally, involving workplace actors, and more specifically, affected workers, in the RTW process appears to be a powerful force in improving the chances of moving workers away from disabled status. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this literature review provide with information about the main topics and trends in research on rehabilitation interventions, revealing some successful modalities of intervention aimed at preventing prolonged work disability. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Successful intervention for preventing prolonged work disability in workers compensated for WRMSDs address workplace issues: physical and psychosocial demands at work, ability of the workers to fill these demands, work organization and support of the worker, and worker' beliefs and attitudes related to work. Successful intervention promotes collaboration, coordination between all actors and stakeholders involved in the process of rehabilitation. Strategies able to mobilize the employees, employers, insurers and health care providers are still needed to be implemented.
