Nursing Students' Spiritual Orientations and Their Attitudes Toward the Principles of Dying with Dignity: A Sample from Turkey

Nurses' Perceptions on Good Death and Their Attitudes Towards the Care of Dying Individuals

This study was conducted to determine the good death perceptions of intensive care and oncology inpatient unit nurses, their attitudes toward care of the dying and the correlation between them. The sample of this study consisted of 134 intensive care and oncology inpatient unit nurses. The data were collected using the Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale and the Good Death Scale. As the results of the study, the nurses had high good death perceptions. They had moderately positive attitudes toward care of the dying patients. As their good death perceptions increased, their positive attitudes toward care of the dying individual also increased. It is recommended to organize programs to raise awareness of nurses about good death and attitudes toward the dying patients and to strengthen their communication and coping methods.

Nursing students' perceptions of a good death: A mixed method study

BACKGROUND

Social aging tendencies and increasing chronic disease burdens draw people's attention to the concept of a good death.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated how Chinese nursing students perceive a good death.

DESIGN

A mixed quantitative and qualitative design.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

Four hundred and ninety-three nursing students from one mainland China university and one Macao SAR university participated in the study.

METHODS

The Good Death Inventory (Chinese version) was used to collect quantitative data. Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Four hundred seventy-two questionnaires were collected, and 21 participants were interviewed. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed through statistics and thematic analysis, respectively.

RESULTS

Chinese nursing students gained an average score of 3.76 ± 0.39 in GDI-C. Students from mainland China, female, and with senior grades scored higher in the GDI-C (p < 0.05). Students' good death perception comprised four themes: positive psychological status, no physical suffering, open and supportive social surroundings, and spiritual/religious perfection. Mainland China and Macao students showed high consistency in their ranking of good death dimensions. The first five rankings in GDI-C were domains of being respected as an individual, dying in a favorite place, preparation for death, good relationships with family/medical staff, and environmental comfort. The last five rankings in GDI-C were domains of religious and spiritual comfort, independence, unawareness of death, pride and beauty, and not being a burden to others.

CONCLUSION

Chinese nursing students had a moderate degree of good death perception, characterized by the emphasis on social domains. Nursing students from mainland China and Macao SAR shared a similar perception of a good death in the Chinese context. More hospice care opportunities should be provided to students to train their empathy. Educators should guide students to apply principles of respect/dignity and open communication in the nursing practice.

Qualitative study on the perception of good death in patients with end-stage cancer in oncology nurses

OBJECTIVE

To explore the perception of good death of patients with end-stage cancer by nurses in the oncology department.

METHOD

In the study we used a phenomenological approach and semi-structured interviews. A total of 11 nurses from the oncology department of a Grade A hospital in Taizhou were interviewed on the cognition of good death from July 1 to September 30, 2022. Colaizzi's analysis method was used to analyse the interview data. This study followed the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ).

RESULT

Four themes were identified: a strong sense of responsibility and mission; To sustain hope and faith; The important role of family members; Improve patients' quality of life.

CONCLUSION

The nurses in the department of oncology have a low level of knowledge about the "good death", and the correct understanding and view of the "good death" is the premise of the realization of " good death". The ability of nursing staff to improve the "good death", attention, and meet the needs and wishes of individuals and families, is the guarantee of the realization of "good death".

Perception of Good Death and Level of Perceived Stress in Relatives of Palliative Care Patients

This study aimed to examine the perception of a good death and the level of perceived stress in relatives of palliative care patients. Relatives of 110 patients hospitalized in a palliative care center constituted the research sample. A personal information form, the "Good Death Scale," and the "Perceived Stress Scale" were used for data collection. The patients' relatives defined good death as being with family members and living this process without suffering. The mean total Good Death Scale score of the relatives of palliative care patients was 54.86 ± 7.78, and their mean total Perceived Stress Scale score was 31.11 ± 10.10. These findings showed that patients' relatives had high perceptions of good death and that their stress levels were above average. To expand the scope of nursing care, it is important to know how patients' relatives are affected by this process. It is recommended that more studies be conducted on this subject.

Attitudes of Oncology Nurses Towards Care of Dying Patients and the Principles of Dying with Dignity and Their Views on Good Death

This study investigated oncology nurses' attitudes toward caring for dying patients, their principles of dying with dignity, and their views on good death. This descriptive study included 257 oncology nurses working at two university hospitals, an educational research hospital and a state hospital in Turkey. Data were collected using the descriptive characteristics information form, the Frommelt Attitudes toward Care of the Dying scale, the Assessment Scale of Attitudes toward the Principles of Dying with Dignity, and the Good Death Scale. The nurses obtained mean scores of 99.53 ± 7.76 on the Frommelt Attitudes toward Care of the Dying scale, 26.84 ± 12.45 on the Assessment Scale of Attitudes toward the Principles of Dying with Dignity, and 57.23 ± 7.48 on the Good Death Scale. The nurses' personal and professional characteristics influenced their attitudes toward caring for dying patients, the principles of dying with dignity, and their views on good death.

The Meaning of Death for Nursing Students and Their Attitudes Toward Dignified Death Principles

This study aims to determine the meaning of death for nursing students and their attitudes toward dignified death principles. The descriptive study was conducted with nursing students studying at a state university in Turkey. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Personal Meanings of Death Scale (PMDS), and the Assessment Scale of Attitudes toward the Principles of Dying with Dignity (ASAPDD). A positive and low-level significant relationship was determined between the students' age and the scores for the PMDS subdimensions and the ASAPDD. It was found that the students had positive perceptions of death and adopted the principles of a dignified death. It was determined that an increase in the students' perceptions of death positively affected their adoption of the principles of a dignified death.

Nursing Students' Professional Competence in Providing Spiritual Care in Iran

Providing spiritual care as a dimension of holistic nursing care is a task that requires competent caregivers. The present study seeks to examine the relationship of personal characteristics with perceived competence in Iranian nursing students and their professional competence in providing spiritual care. This cross-sectional study was conducted on all the nursing students at Semnan University of Medical Sciences, Semnan, Iran, using the census method (n = 224). The research sample consisted of 179 students who met the eligibility criteria. Data were collected using the Spiritual Care Competence Scale (SCCS). The mean SCCS score for respondents was 3.66. Using the cutoff point of >3.5, approximately three quarters of respondents (72.1%) perceived themselves to be competent in delivering spiritual care. The scores of competence and its domains were not significantly different in terms of history of participation in ethics training workshops, gender and marital status (P > 0.05). The scores were also not significantly correlated with age, semester and work experience. Although more than 70% of the nursing students perceived themselves competent in providing spiritual care, nursing curriculum planners should seek to promote the spiritual capacity and competence of nursing students in providing spiritual care through education and training.

What Intern Nursing Students in Turkey Think About Death and End-of-Life Care? A Qualitative Exploration

This descriptive qualitative study was planned to determine the views of intern nursing students about death and end-of-life care. The study was completed with 12 intern students based on the criterion of data saturation. As a result of the study, the categories of 'end,' 'uncertainty,' 'fear,' 'beginning,' 'helplessness' under the theme of death, 'ensuring peace,' 'continuing communication' 'providing psychosocial/spiritual support,' 'acting in conformity with principles of ethics/morality,' 'continuing to provide physical care,' 'supporting the family,' 'making the best use of the limited remaining time or helping the patient's last wishes come true' under the theme of end-of-life care emerged.
