Solutions, in Particular Dilute Solutions of Nonelectrolytes: A Review

The liquid state is one of the three principal states of matter and arguably the most important one; and liquid mixtures represent a large research field of profound theoretical and practical interest. This topic is of importance in many areas of the applied sciences, such as in chemical engineering, geochemistry, the environmental sciences, biophysics and biomedical technology. First, I will concisely present a review of important concepts from classical thermodynamics of nonelectrolyte solutions; this will be followed by a survey of (semi-)empirical approaches to representing the composition and temperature dependence of selected thermodynamic mixture properties, and finally the focus will be on dilute binary nonelectrolyte solutions where one component, a supercritical solute, is present in much smaller quantity than the other component, called the solvent. Partial molar properties in the limit of infinite dilution (indicated by a superscript ∞) are of particular interest. For instance, activity coefficients (Lewis–Randall (LR) convention) are customarily used to characterize mixing behavior, and infinite-dilution values $$\gamma_{i}^{{{\text{LR,}}\infty }}$$ γ i LR, ∞ provide a convenient route for obtaining binary parameters for several popular solution models. When discussing solute (j)—solvent (i) interactions in solutions where the solute is supercritical, the Henry fugacity $$h_{j,i} \left( {T,P} \right)$$ h j , i T , P , also known as Henry’s law (HL) constant, is a measurable thermodynamic key quantity. Its temperature dependence yields information on the partial molar enthalpy change on solution $$\Delta H_{j}^{\infty } \left( {T,P} \right)$$ Δ H j ∞ T , P , while its pressure dependence yields information on the partial molar volume $$V_{j}^{{{\text{L,}}\infty }} \left( {T,P} \right)$$ V j L, ∞ T , P of solute j in the liquid phase (superscript L). I will clarify issues frequently overlooked, touch upon solubility data reduction and correlation, report a few recent high-precision experimental results on dilute aqueous solutions of supercritical nonelectrolytes, and show the equivalency of results for caloric quantities (e.g. $$\Delta H_{j}^{\infty }$$ Δ H j ∞ ) obtained via van ’t Hoff analysis of high-precision solubility data with directly measured calorimetric data.

Local hydration pressures in methanol aqueous solution: a Raman spectroscopy analysis

Raman spectra of methanol-water mixtures were measured over the whole composition range at room conditions. The spectra are used to quantify the strength of intermolecular interactions in terms of local internal pressures. The conclusions derived from the spectroscopic analysis are discussed within the framework of the solvation pressure model using values of the cohesion energy density expected in the mixture. This work demonstrates that an appropriate analysis of Raman spectroscopy experiments can be used to quantify the local internal pressures due to intermolecular interactions in liquid mixtures, provided that high pressure results of the pure liquids are available.

Role of water structure on the high pressure micellization and phase transformations of sodium dodecanoate aqueous solutions

The aim of this work is to study the micelle formation and possible subsequent transformations of sodium dodecanoate aggregates in aqueous solutions at pressures up to 700 MPa. This pressure range is much larger than in most available studies on surfactant solutions and allows for evaluating the possible effect of the low-density to high-density water transformation on the aggregative behavior of the surfactant. The speed-of-sound and attenuation coefficient were determined at 298.15 K as a function of pressure at concentrations up to 0.13 mol kg(-1) in water. The speed-of-sound behavior with concentration is maintained up to pressures around 350 MPa. The attenuation coefficient, initially insensitive to pressure, exhibits a sudden increase around 250 MPa, reaching a maximum around 350 MPa and a plateau above 500 MPa in the case of the highest studied surfactant concentrations. From the analysis of the changes observed in these properties, it was possible to extend the concentration-pressure phase diagram of sodium dodecanoate at constant temperature. Some peculiarities found were: (1) the critical micellar concentration reaches a maximum around 170 MPa, (2) the micellar phase disappears above 400 MPa, (3) a phase transformation starts around 250 MPa, setting the solubility limit of the surfactant at concentrations around 0.06 mol kg(-1) in this pressure region, and (4) further transformations occur between 350 and 500 MPa. We discuss in length the possibility that such transformations might be driven by structural changes linked to the so-called low-density-water to high-density-water transition.
