On the Hydration of the Rare Earth Ions in Aqueous Solution

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, Electronic Ground State, and Electron Spin Relaxation of Seven Lanthanide Ions Bound to Lanmodulin and the Bioinspired Chelator, 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO)

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of lanthanide(III) ions besides Gd3+ , bound to small-molecule and protein chelators, are uncharacterized. Here, the EPR properties of 7 lanthanide(III) ions bound to the natural lanthanide-binding protein, lanmodulin (LanM), and the synthetic small-molecule chelator, 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) ("HOPO"), were systematically investigated. Echo-detected pulsed EPR spectra reveal intense signals from ions for which the normal continuous-wave first-derivative spectra are negligibly different from zero. Spectra of Kramers lanthanide ions Ce3+ , Nd3+ , Sm3+ , Er3+ , and Yb3+ , and non-Kramers Tb3+ and Tm3+ , bound to LanM are more similar to the ions in dilute aqueous:ethanol solution than to those coordinated with HOPO. Lanmodulins from two bacteria, with distinct metal-binding sites, had similar spectra for Tb3+ but different spectra for Nd3+ . Spin echo dephasing rates (1/Tm ) are faster for lanthanides than for most transition metals and limited detection of echoes to temperatures below ~6 to 12 K. Dephasing rates were environment dependent and decreased in the order water:ethanol>LanM>HOPO, which is attributed to decreasing librational motion. These results demonstrate that the EPR spectra and relaxation times of lanthanide(III) ions are sensitive to coordination environment, motivating wider application of these methods for characterization of both small-molecule and biomolecule interactions with lanthanides.

Adsorption of Sc on the Surface of Kaolinite (001): A Density Functional Theory Study

The adsorption behavior of Sc on the surface of kaolinite (001) was investigated using the density functional theory via the generalized gradient approximation plane-wave pseudopotential method. The highest coordination numbers of hydrated Sc3+, ScOH2+, and ScOH2 + species are eight, six, and five, respectively. The adsorption model was based on ScOH2H2O5+, which has the most stable ionic configuration in the liquid phase. According to the adsorption energy and bonding mechanism, the adsorption of Sc ionic species can be categorized into outer layer and inner layer adsorptions. We found that the hydrated Sc ions were mainly adsorbed on the outer layer of the kaolinite (001)Al-OH and (00-1)Si-O surfaces through hydrogen bonding while also being adsorbed on the inner layer of the deprotonated kaolinite (001)Al-OH surface through coordination bonding. The inner layer adsorption has three adsorption configurations, with the lying hydroxyl group (Ol) position having the lowest adsorption energy (-653.32 KJ/mol). The adsorption energy for the inner layer is lower compared to the outer layer, while the extent of deprotonation is limited. This is because the deprotonation of the inner adsorption layer is energetically unfavorable. We speculate that Sc ions species predominantly adsorb onto the surface of kaolinite (001) in an outer layer configuration.

Superparamagnetic Spinel-Ferrite Nano-Adsorbents Adapted for Hg2+, Dy3+, Tb3+ Removal/Recycling: Synthesis, Characterization, and Assessment of Toxicity

In the present work, superparamagnetic adsorbents based on 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (APTMS)-coated maghemite (γFe₂O₃@SiO₂-NH₂) and cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄@SiO₂-NH₂) nanoparticles were prepared and characterized using transmission-electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM/EDXS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), specific surface-area measurements (BET), zeta potential (ζ) measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and magnetometry (VSM). The adsorption of Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺ ions onto adsorbent surfaces in model salt solutions was tested. The adsorption was evaluated in terms of adsorption efficiency (%), adsorption capacity (mg/g), and desorption efficiency (%) based on the results of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Both adsorbents, γFe₂O₃@SiO₂-NH₂ and CoFe₂O₄@SiO₂-NH₂, showed high adsorption efficiency toward Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺ ions, ranging from 83% to 98%, while the adsorption capacity reached the following values of Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺, in descending order: Tb (4.7 mg/g) > Dy (4.0 mg/g) > Hg (2.1 mg/g) for γFe₂O₃@SiO₂-NH₂; and Tb (6.2 mg/g) > Dy (4.7 mg/g) > Hg (1.2 mg/g) for CoFe₂O₄@SiO₂-NH₂. The results of the desorption with 100% of the desorbed Dy³⁺, Tb³⁺, and Hg²⁺ ions in an acidic medium indicated the reusability of both adsorbents. A cytotoxicity assessment of the adsorbents on human-skeletal-muscle derived cells (SKMDCs), human fibroblasts, murine macrophage cells (RAW264.7), and human-umbilical-vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was conducted. The survival, mortality, and hatching percentages of zebrafish embryos were monitored. All the nanoparticles showed no toxicity in the zebrafish embryos until 96 hpf, even at a high concentration of 500 mg/L.

Complexation of trivalent metal cations (Al3+, Ga3+, In3+, La3+, Lu3+) to cucurbiturils: a DFT/SMD evaluation of the key factors governing the host-guest recognition

Cucurbiturils (CBs), the pumpkin-shaped macrocycles, are suitable hosts for an array of neutral and cationic species. A plethora of host-guest complexes between CBs and a variety of guest molecules has been studied. However, much remains unknown, even in the complexation of very simple guests such as metal cations. In the computational study herein, DFT molecular modeling has been employed to investigate the interactions of a series of trivalent metal cations (Al³⁺, Ga³⁺, In³⁺, La³⁺, Lu³⁺) to cucurbit[n]urils and to evaluate the main factors controlling the host-guest complexation. The thermodynamic descriptors (Gibbs energies in the gas phase and in a water environment) of the corresponding complexation reactions have been estimated. This research is a logical continuation of an earlier study on the interaction between CB[n]s and a series of biologically essential mono- and divalent metal cations (Na⁺/K⁺ and Mg²⁺/Ca²⁺, respectively).

Preparation of Gellan Gum-Inorganic Composite Film and Its Metal Ion Accumulation Property

Gellan gum is one of the water-soluble anionic polysaccharides produced by the bacteria Sphingomonas elodea. In this study, we prepared gellan gum-inorganic composite films by mixing the gellan gum and a silane coupling reagent—3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). These gellan gum-GPTMS composite films were stable in an aqueous solution and showed a thermal stability. In addition, these composite films indicated a mechanical strength by the formation of the three-dimensional network of siloxane. We demonstrated the accumulation of metal ions from a metal ion-containing aqueous solution by the composite film. As a result, although the composite film indicated the accumulation of heavy and rare-earth metal ions, the light metal ions, such as Mg(II) and Al(III) ions, did not interact with the composite material. Therefore, the accumulative mechanism of metal ions using a composite film was evaluated by IR measurements. As a consequence, although the accumulation of heavy and rare-earth metal ions occurred at both the −COO− group and the −OH group in the gellan gum, the accumulation of light metal ions occurred only at the −OH group.

Electronic Structure of Ytterbium(III) Solvates-a Combined Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study

The wide range of optical and magnetic properties of lanthanide(III) ions is associated with their intricate electronic structures which, in contrast to lighter elements, is characterized by strong relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling. Nevertheless, computational methods are now capable of describing the ladder of electronic energy levels of the simpler trivalent lanthanide ions, as well as the lowest energy term of most of the series. The electronic energy levels result from electron configurations that are first split by spin-orbit coupling into groups of energy levels denoted by the corresponding Russell-Saunders terms. Each of these groups are then split by the ligand field into the actual electronic energy levels known as microstates or sometimes m_J levels. The ligand-field splitting directly informs on the coordination geometry and is a valuable tool for determining the structure and thus correlating the structure and properties of metal complexes in solution. The issue with lanthanide complexes is that the determination of complex structures from ligand-field splitting remains a very challenging task. In this paper, the optical spectra-absorption, luminescence excitation, and luminescence emission-of ytterbium(III) solvates were recorded in water, methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The electronic energy levels, that is, the microstates, were resolved experimentally. Subsequently, density functional theory calculations were used to model the structures of the solvates, and ab initio relativistic complete active space self-consistent field calculations (CASSCF) were employed to obtain the microstates of the possible structures of each solvate. By comparing the experimental and theoretical data, it was possible to determine both the coordination number and solution structure of each solvate. In water, methanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide, the solvates were found to be eight-coordinated and have a square antiprismatic coordination geometry. In DMSO, the speciation was found to be more complicated. The robust methodology developed for comparing experimental spectra and computational results allows the solution structures of homoleptic lanthanide complexes to be determined.
