SiO2/polyvinylimidazole hybrid polymer as a sorbent for extraction by matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD): synthesis, characterization, and evaluation

Tailoring Structural, Chemical, and Photocatalytic Properties of ZnO@β-SiC Composites: The Effect of Annealing Temperature and Environment

For achieving unified functionalities of rare-earth free materials, the development of innovative zinc oxide and β-silicon carbide (ZnO@β-SiC) composites by a solid-state reaction method is presented. The evolution of zinc silicate (Zn₂SiO₄) is evidenced by X-ray diffraction when annealed in air beyond 700 °C. Detailed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses reveal the involvement of silicon dioxide in forming Zn₂SiO₄. Transmission electron microscopy and the associated energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elucidate the evolution of the zinc silicate phase at the ZnO/β-SiC interface, though it can be averted by vacuum annealing. These results manifest the importance of air in oxidizing SiC before a chemical reaction with ZnO from 700 °C. Finally, ZnO@β-SiC composites are found to be promising for methylene blue dye degradation under ultraviolet radiation, but the annealing above 700 °C is detrimental due to the evolution of a potential barrier in the presence of Zn₂SiO₄ at the ZnO/β-SiC interface.

Hierarchical Graphene/Metal-Organic Framework Composites with Tailored Wettability for Separation of Immiscible Liquids

Membrane filtration is a promising technology for the separation of organic immiscible liquids. Surface topography has a direct impact on the wettability of membranes, and it remains largely unexplored. Here, we introduce on-demand liquid separation by coating porous graphene/metal-organic framework (MOF) composites with tunable wettability on porous substrates. Our results have shown that polydopamine (PDA) coating mediates the controlled growth of MOF nanostructures and subsequent fluorination on the porous graphene framework. Surface topography of the graphene frameworks strongly depends on the loading content of MOF nanostructures. The concurrent control of surface coverage of MOF and surface chemistry allows tailoring of the trapped air fraction underneath the porous graphene frameworks in the range of 0.97 to 0.8. As a result, the surface energy of the graphene/MOF coatings can be programmed to afford the change in surface properties from superamphiphobicity to lyophobicity and the selective penetration of low-surface-energy (SE) liquids and the interception of high-SE liquids were achieved. The tailored wettability of graphene/MOF coatings allows for the separation of liquid mixtures of different ranges of SE, making it a general strategy for complex liquid treatment and chemical purification.

Boronic acid-containing polycyclosiloxane showed unique self-assembly nanofilm formation (6 nm film thickness) on various substrates and provided film-based metal ion sensor capability through dynamic covalent bonding.

Reaction-Based Semiconducting Polymer Nanoprobes for Photoacoustic Imaging of Protein Sulfenic Acids

Protein sulfenic acids play a key role in oxidative signal transduction of many biological and pathological processes; however, current chemical tools rely on visible fluorescence signals, limiting their utility to in vitro assays. We herein report reaction-based semiconducting polymer nanoprobes (rSPNs) with near-infrared absorption for in vivo photoacoustic (PA) imaging of protein sulfenic acids. rSPNs comprise an optically active semiconducting polymer as the core shielded with inert silica and poly(ethylene glycol) corona. The sulfenic acid reactive group (1,3-cyclohexanedione) is efficiently conjugated to the surface of nanoparticles via click chemistry. Such a nanostructure enables the specific recognition reaction between rSPNs and protein sulfenic acids without compromising the fluorescence and PA properties. In addition to in vitro tracking of the production of protein sulfenic acids in cancer cells under oxidative stress, rSPNs permit real-time PA and fluorescence imaging of protein sulfenic acids in tumors of living mice. This study thus not only demonstrates the first reaction-based PA probes with submolecular level recognition ability but also highlights the opportunities provided by hybrid nanoparticles for advanced molecular imaging.
