Natural Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogels Used for Dye Removal

Removal of contaminants from discharge water is vital and demands urgent assistance with the goal to keep clean water. Adsorption is one of the most common, efficient, and low-priced methods used in water treatment. Various polysaccharide-based gels have been used as efficient dye adsorbents from wastewater. This review summarizes cutting-edge research of the last decade of different hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides (chitin, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pullulan, and dextran) concerning their dye adsorption efficiency. Beyond their natural abundance, attributes of polysaccharides such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cost make them not only efficient, but also environmentally sustainable candidates for water purification. The synthesis and dye removal performance together with the effect of diverse factors on gels retaining ability, kinetic, and isotherm models encountered in adsorption studies, are introduced. Thermodynamic parameters, sorbent recycling capacity along with conclusions and future prospects are also presented.

Preparation and properties of CS/P(AM-co-AA) composite hydrogels by frontal polymerization of ternary DES

A deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared from choline chloride (ChCl), acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA); chitosan (CS) was used as a filler, and CS/P(AM-co-AA) composite hydrogels were prepared by frontal polymerization (FP). The hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties, pH responsiveness and conductivity of the hydrogel were studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were significantly improved by adding CS, and the tensile strength and compressive strength were increased by 11.61 and 1.65 times respectively due to the increase in number of hydrogen bonds. At the same time, due to the presence of AA, the composite hydrogel has excellent pH response and super high swelling performance under alkaline conditions. The introduction of CS enhanced the conductivity of the hydrogel and gradually increased with the increase of CS content. The conductivity of the hydrogel with CS content of 10 wt% was nearly 160 times that of the hydrogel without CS. In this study, a more convenient and rapid method was proposed to prepare conductive composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and pH responsiveness.

A new methacrylate monomer with two propylene glycol groups on the side chain, di(propylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (diPGMA), was synthesised and homo- and co-polymerised for the first time.

Synthesis and investigation of a self-assembled hydrogel based on hydroxyethyl cellulose and its in vitro ibuprofen drug release characteristics

IBU is solubilized and encapsulated by β-CDP. Then C₁₂ side-chain grafting onto HEC forms inclusion complexes with the cavities of β-CDP in β-CDP/IBU through host–guest interactions to form a new self-assembled hydrogel gel-(β)CDP-HEC/IBU.
