Preparation of mechanically strong poly (ether block amide)/Mercaptoethanol breathable membranes for biomedical applications

A nanofiber-hydrogel composite from green synthesized AgNPs embedded to PEBAX/PVA hydrogel and PA/Pistacia atlantica gum nanofiber for wound dressing

A polyamide/Pistacia atlantica (P.a) gum nanofiber, fabricated by electrospinning method, was coated on a layer of PEBAX/PVA hydrogel embedded with green synthesized Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) and the prepared nanofiber-hydrogel composite was assessed for wound dressing application. The AgNPs were characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Zeta potential analysis. The PEBAX/PVA/Ag hydrogel, prepared using solution casting method, displayed strong mechanical properties as Young's modulus and the elongation at break for the hydrogel containing AgNPs increased by 12 % and 96 %, respectively. The PEBAX/PVA/Ag hydrogel showed a high antimicrobial activity towards the E. coli (22.8 mm) with no cytotoxicity. The effect of adding the P.a gum on the properties of polyamide nanofiber was investigated using FTIR, SEM, and tensile tests. Samples were assessed by swelling, degradation, and water vapor transfer measurements. Very fine and continuous fibers with average diameters of ≤200 nm were observed by SEM analysis due to the addition of the P.a gum. The result of tensile test indicated that the addition of P.a gum improves the mechanical properties of nanofibers. The physical properties and biocompatibility of the two layers were shown to be complementary when combined.

Polyether Block Amide as Host Matrix for Nanocomposite Membranes Applied to Different Sensitive Fields

The cornerstones of sustainable development require the treatment of wastes or contaminated streams allowing the separation and recycling of useful substances by a more rational use of energy sources. Separation technologies play a prominent role, especially when conducted by inherently environmentally friendly systems such as membrane operations. However, high-performance materials are more and more needed to improve the separative performance of polymeric materials nanocomposites are ideally suited to develop advanced membranes by combining organic polymers with suitable fillers having superior properties. In this area, polyether block amide copolymers (Pebax) are increasingly adopted as host matrices due to their distinctive properties in terms of being lightweight and easy to process, having good resistance to most chemicals, flexibility and high strength. In this light, the present review seeks to provide a comprehensive examination of the progress in the development of Pebax-based nanocomposite films for their application in several sensitive fields, that are challenging and at the same time attractive, including olefin/paraffin separation, pervaporation, water treatment, flexible films for electronics, electromagnetic shielding, antimicrobial surfaces, wound dressing and self-venting packaging. It covers a wide range of materials used as fillers and analyzes the properties of the derived nanocomposites and their performance. The general principles from the choice of the material to the approaches for the heterogeneous phase compatibilization as well as for the performance improvement were also surveyed. From a detailed analysis of the current studies, the most effective strategies to overcome some intrinsic limitations of these nanocomposites are highlighted, providing guidelines for the correlated research.

Poly(ether-block-amide) copolymer membrane for CO2/N2 separation: the influence of the casting solution concentration on its morphology, thermal properties and gas separation performance

The present work is focused on the study of the effect that the casting solution concentration has on the morphology and gas separation performance of poly(ether-block-amide) copolymer membranes (Pebax^® MH 1657). With this aim, three different concentrations of Pebax^® MH 1657 in the casting solution (1, 3 and 5 wt%) were used to prepare dense membranes with a thickness of 40 µm. The morphology and thermal stability of all membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, rotational viscometry and thermogravimetric analyses. An increase in crystallinity was notable when the amount of solvent in the Pebax^® MH 1657 solution was higher, mainly related to the polymer chains arrangement and the solvent evaporation time. Such characteristic seemed to play a key role in the thermal degradation of the membranes, confirming that the most crystalline materials tend to be thermally more stable than those with lower crystallinity. To study the influence of their morphology and operating temperature on the CO₂ separation, gas separation tests were conducted with the gas mixture CO₂/N₂. Results indicated that a compromise must be found between the amount of solvent used to prepare the membranes and the crystallinity, in order to reach the best gas separation performance. In this study, the best performance was achieved with the membrane prepared from a 3 wt% casting solution, reaching at 35°C and under a feed pressure of 3 bar, a CO₂ permeability of 110 Barrer and a CO₂/N₂ selectivity of 36.
