The prospect of synthesis of PES/PEG blend membranes using blend NMP/DMF for CO2/N2 separation

Highly sensitive and repeatable recording photopolymer for holographic data storage containing N-methylpyrrolidone

The low photosensitivity of phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) severely limits its recording speed for holographic data storage. A high-performance holographic recording medium based on a unique combination of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) regulated PQ/PMMA has been developed. A NMP-PQ/PMMA photopolymer with high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency and negligible volume shrinkage was successfully fabricated by tuning the composition of the PMMA matrix by varying the ratio of NMP to monomers. The photosensitivity is increased by 6.9 times (from 0.27 cm J-1 to 1.86 cm J-1), the diffraction efficiency is increased from 60% to > 80%, and volume shrinkage is decreased by a factor of 2 (from 0.4% to 0.2%). Further investigation revealed that the addition of NMP significantly reduced the molecular weight of PMMA and increased the amount of MMA residuals, while also improving the solubility of PQ molecules. More interestingly, for the first time, the NMP-PQ/PMMA material could record data information repeatedly at least 6 times. The present study elucidates that the introduction of NMP not only modulates the molecular weight of PMMA but also enables the residual monomer MMA to more easily combine with PQ to form a photoproduct for improved holographic performance.

Dimethylformamide Impurities as Propylene Polymerization Inhibitor

This research study examined how the use of dimethylformamide (DMF) as an inhibitor affects the propylene polymerization process when using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Several experiments were carried out using TiCl4/MgCl2 as a catalyst, aluminum trialkyl as a cocatalyst, and different amounts of DMF. Then, we analyzed how DMF influences other aspects of the process, such as catalyst activity, molecular weight, and the number of branches in the polymer chains obtained, using experimental and computational methods. The results revealed that as the DMF/Ti ratio increases, the catalyst activity decreases. From a concentration of 5.11 ppm of DMF, a decrease in catalyst activity was observed, ranging from 45 TM/Kg to 44 TM/Kg. When the DMF concentration was increased to 40.23 ppm, the catalyst activity decreased to 43 TM/Kg, and with 75.32 ppm, it dropped even further to 39 TM/Kg. The highest concentration of DMF evaluated, 89.92 ppm, resulted in a catalyst productivity of 36.5 TM/Kg and lost productivity of 22%. In addition, significant changes in the polymer's melt flow index (MFI) were noted as the DMF concentration increased. When 89.92 ppm of DMF was added, the MFI loss was 75%, indicating a higher flowability of the polymer. In this study, it was found that dimethylformamide (DMF) exhibits a strong affinity for the titanium center of a Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalyst, with an adsorption energy (Ead) of approximately -46.157 kcal/mol, indicating a robust interaction. This affinity is significantly higher compared to propylene, which has an Ead of approximately -5.2 kcal/mol. The study also revealed that the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of DMF and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (SOMO) of the Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalyst is energetically favorable, with a value of approximately 0.311 eV.

Methanol production and purification via membrane-based technology: Recent advancements, challenges, and the way forward

Industrail revolution on the back of fossil fuels has costed humanity higher temperatures on the planet due to ever-growing concentration of CO₂ emissions in Earth's atmosphere. To tackle global warming demand for renewable energy sources continues to increase. Along renewables, there has been a growing interest in converting carbon dioxide to methanol, which can be used as a fuel or a feedstock for producing chemicals. The current review study provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements, challenges, and future prospects of methanol production and purification via membrane-based technology. Traditional downstream processes for methanol production, such as distillation and absorption, have several drawbacks, including high energy consumption and environmental concerns. In comparison to conventional technologies, membrane-based separation techniques have emerged as a promising alternative for producing and purifying methanol. The review highlights recent developments in membrane-based methanol production and purification technology, including using novel membrane materials such as ceramic, polymeric, and mixed matrix membranes. Additionally, integrating photocatalytic processes with membrane separation has been investigated to improve the conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol. Despite the potential benefits of membrane-based systems, several challenges need to be addressed. Membrane fouling and scaling are significant issues that can reduce the efficiency and lifespan of the membranes. Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness of membrane-based systems compared to traditional methods is a critical consideration that must be evaluated. In conclusion, the review provides insights into the current state of membrane-based technology for methanol production and purification and identifies areas for future research. The development of high-performance membranes and the optimization of membrane-based processes are crucial for improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of this technology and for advancing the goal of sustainable energy production.

Application of Poly(ether sulfone)-Based Membranes in Clean Energy Technology

Poly(ether sulfone) (PES) is a kind of polymer materials with excellent electrical insulation and acid/alkali stability. PES can be operated at high temperature continuously for a long time and still maintain excellent property stability in the environments with rapidly changed temperature, namely, great thermostability. Moreover, PES has low molding shrinkage, good dimensional stability and excellent film-forming characteristics. Compared with inorganic membranes, PES-based membranes have lower cost, which have received more attention and wide recognition in the field of clean energy technologies in recent years, such as flow batteries, fuel cells, water treatment, and gas separation. Therefore, this review summarizes the research status and prospect of the utilization of PES-based membranes in clean energy fields, in order to further promote their development and application.

Investigation of transport properties of 6FDA-durene polymeric membrane for landfill gas application using molecular simulation approach

Gas separation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) from landfill gas (LFG) is very crucial to be undertaken to treat significant greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted to the atmosphere. Among the well-developed conventional technologies, membrane has drawn a huge attraction from many researchers to leverage on its application, which favors an efficient and environmentally safe process. In membrane technology, inorganic membrane type requires a complex and pricey fabrication process which is contradictory from the polymeric membrane features. The impressive gas permeability and acceptable value of selectivity possessed by polymeric membranes has contributed to its main attractiveness over the other types of membranes available. Besides, the frequent approach used which is through experimental methods requires complicated procedures and possess high difficulty to obtain a defect-free membrane sample. In this work, 6FDA-durene has been investigated by employing a molecular simulation approach to further examine its fractional free volume within the membrane matrix and transport properties. The structure creation of complete framework and the analysis of project deliverables has been adopted through a molecular dynamic simulation in Materials Studio software. FFV value obtained based on the simulated framework is 0.1743 which establishes about 3.15% deviation to the published experimental works. Upon the increment of operating temperature, most of the gasses would be in their activation condition and possess higher gas diffusivities and permeabilities. However, with increasing operating pressure simulation, the membrane framework was compressed and reached its asymptotic limit at 7 atm which acts as a maximum point when the membrane system becomes saturated. In both cases, the selectivity of CO₂/CH₄ gas pairs are validated with low percentage deviation (less than 10%) towards the reported experimental works hence affirms the reliability of results and methodology conducted.

A Prospective Concept on the Fabrication of Blend PES/PEG/DMF/NMP Mixed Matrix Membranes with Functionalised Carbon Nanotubes for CO2/N2 Separation

With an ever-increasing global population, the combustion of fossil fuels has risen immensely to meet the demand for electricity, resulting in significant increase in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. In recent years, CO₂ separation technology, such as membrane technology, has become highly desirable. Fabricated mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have the most desirable gas separation performances, as these membranes have the ability to overcome the trade-off limitations. In this paper, blended MMMs are reviewed along with two polymers, namely polyether sulfone (PES) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Both polymers can efficiently separate CO₂ because of their chemical properties. In addition, blended N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylformamide (DMF) solvents were also reviewed to understand the impact of blended MMMs’ morphology on separation of CO₂. However, the fabricated MMMs had challenges, such as filler agglomeration and void formation. To combat this, functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs-F) fillers were utilised to aid gas separation performance and polymer compatibility issues. Additionally, a summary of the different fabrication techniques was identified to further optimise the fabrication methodology. Thus, a blended MMM fabricated using PES, PEG, NMP, DMF and MWCNTs-F is believed to improve CO₂/nitrogen separation.
