Electron beam induced degradation of clopyralid in aqueous solutions

Fabrication and Characterization of Electrospun Cu-Doped TiO2 Nanofibers and Enhancement of Photocatalytic Performance Depending on Cu Content and Electron Beam Irradiation

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is a widely studied material with many attractive properties such as its photocatalytic features. However, its commercial use is limited due to issues such as deactivation in the visible spectrum caused by its wide bandgap and the short lifetime of photo-excited charge carriers. To overcome these challenges, various modifications could be considered. In this study, we investigated copper doping and electron beam treatment. As-spun TiO2 nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning a TiO2 sol, which obtained viscosity through a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix. Cu-doped TiO2 nanofibers with varying dopant concentrations were synthesized by adding copper salts. Then, the as-spun nanofibers were calcined for crystallization. To evaluate photocatalytic performance, a photodegradation test of methylene blue aqueous solution was performed for 6 h. Methylene blue concentration was measured over time using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results showed that Cu doping at an appropriate concentration and electron-beam irradiation showed improved photocatalytic efficiency compared to bare TiO2 nanofibers. When the molar ratio of Cu/Ti was 0.05%, photodegradation rate was highest, which was 10.39% higher than that of bare TiO2. As a result of additional electron-beam treatment of this sample, photocatalytic efficiency improved up to 8.93% compared to samples without electron-beam treatment.

An overview of electrokinetically enhanced chemistry technologies for organochlorine compounds (OCs) remediation from soil

In recent years, electrokinetic (EK) remediation technology has gained significant attention among researchers. This technology has proven effective in the remediation of low-permeability polluted soil. Organochlorines (OCs) are highly toxic, persistent, bioaccumulative, and capable of long-distance migration. They can also accumulate through the food chain, posing significant environmental risks. This paper provides a review of the reaction mechanism of combining chemical technology with EK remediation for the removal of several typical OCs. Furthermore, the factors influencing the efficiency of EK remediation, such as pH and ζ potential, voltage gradients, electrode materials, electrolytes, electrode arrangements, and soil types, are summarized. The paper also presents an overview of recent advancements in the methods of combining chemical technology with EK remediation for the treatment of OCs contaminated soil. Specifically, the research progress in surfactants-combined EK technology, chemical oxidation-combined EK technology, chemical reduction-combined EK technology, and chemical adsorption-combined EK technology is summarized. These findings serve as a foundation for ongoing and future research endeavors in the field. Further exploration and investigation in this area are essential for advancing the field and improving environmental remediation strategies.

Electron beam degradation of the cardiovascular drug salbutamol: Mechanisms and degradation pathways

With the increasing incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases, high consumption of the cardiovascular drug salbutamol (SAL) has made this compound an emerging pollutant in natural water and a challenge for traditional wastewater treatment. In this paper, an efficient advanced oxidation process was used to degrade SAL by electron beam (EB) irradiation. The results revealed that 100 mg L^-1 of SAL could be nearly completely removed (95.1%) at 10 kGy and the degradation kinetic well followed pseudo first-order kinetic model. Different factors, including pH, inorganic ions and water matrix, had varying effects on the degradation of SAL owing to their important influence on the formation of reactive species in the aqueous solution. And it was found that e_aq^- played a major role in the degradation of SAL parent. Moreover, the addition of K₂S₂O₈ (20 mM) increased the SAL mineralization rate from 2.9% to 64.2%, suggesting that oxidation free radicals could greatly improve the mineralization rate of SAL. Combining with the theoretical calculations and determined degradation by-products, four possible degradation pathways of SAL by EB irradiation were proposed, including H•, •OH and e_aq^- all participated in the degradation of SAL. Finally, toxicity evaluation suggested that the toxicity of SAL aqueous solution reduced after EB irradiation, indicating that it is an effective method to degrade SAL.

A high-efficiency decomposition method for mono and dimethylmercury induced by low-energy electron attachment (<≈7 eV): A computational insight into the decomposition mechanism of extremely toxic mercury compounds

Dimethylmercury (DMM) and monomethylmercury (MMM) are extremely toxic and dangerous environmental contaminants. Unfortunately, there is no effective way to remove these substances from the environment. This study looks into the efficient decomposition of DMM and MMM by low-energy electrons. The calculated quantum scattering properties reveal the presence of metastable electronic states in both molecules. An examination of the spatial features of the electronic resonances, as well as the computation and characterization of the vibrational normal modes, suggests possible bond break pathways of the metastable electronic states. Most electronic resonances result in the release of Hg(0), which is easily transported to the gas phase due to its low solubility in water and high volatility.

Electron beam irradiation induced degradation of antidepressant drug fluoxetine in water matrices

With the development of psychiatric disorder in the current society, abuse of antidepressant drug fluoxetine (FLX) has made such compound an emerging contaminant in natural waters, and causes endocrine systems disturbance on some aquatic species. Herein, an efficient advanced oxidation process (AOP), electron beam irradiation was carried out to investigate the decomposition characteristics of such novel environmental pollutant, including the effects of initial concentration, pH, radical scavengers and anions. The results showed that FLX degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The degradation rate and dose constant decreased with increasing initial FLX concentration; and G-values elevated with the increase of initial concentration but reduced with increase of absorbed dose. Acidic condition was more conducive to FLX destruction than neutral and alkaline. The radical scavenger experiments indicated OH was the main reactive species for the decomposition of FLX, while the reductive species e^-_aq and H played an adjuvant role. The presence of anions slightly decreased or even no impact on FLX degradation rate. Various water matrices influenced degradation processes of FLX. Experimental results suggested radiolytic degradation showed the best performance in pure water rather than natural water no matter with filtration or not. Moreover, with the occurrence of defluorination and dealkylation during degradation process, some organic and inorganic intermediates were detected, and the possible degradation mechanisms and pathways of FLX were proposed.
