Insights into sorption species of Eu(III) on γ-Al2O3 and bentonite under different pH: Studies at macro- and micro-scales

Adsorption behaviour of pollutants: Heavy metals, radionuclides, organic pollutants, on clays and their minerals (raw, modified and treated): A review

The increasing anthropogenic pressure results in environmental pollution and thus adversely affects the integrity of ecosystems. Consequently, various methods of removing pollutants from effluents have been developed and used to minimise this negative impact, with adsorption on clay minerals identified as the most promising approach. This review examines the adsorption of heavy metals, radionuclides, and organic pollutants on clays/clay minerals and their composites under diverse conditions and deals with the applications of these materials in the construction of engineering barriers for waste management. Additionally, we discuss the efficiency and mechanisms of pollutant adsorption on clays subjected to various treatments and modifications while describing the beneficial effects of such modification/treatment on adsorption performance, reusability, and in vivo/in vitro toxicity.

Insight into the adsorption of europium(III) on muscovite and phlogopite: Effects of pH, electrolytes, humic substances and mica structures

Europium(III), i.e., Eu(III), is chemically analogous to the trivalent lanthanides (Ln) and actinides (An). A good understanding of the adsorption behaviour of Eu(III) on mica group minerals is critical to the safety evaluation of the radioactive contamination. Nevertheless, the structural complexity of micaceous minerals makes it difficult to draw a consistent conclusion in the study of Eu(III) migration. In this work, we contrastively studied Eu(III) adsorption on dioctahedral muscovite and trioctahedral phlogopite as functions of pH, ionic strength, background electrolytes, interaction sequence, and fulvic acid (FA). Batch experiments showed that Eu(III) adsorption on both micas was strongly dependent on pH but quite independent on ionic strength that is determined by Na⁺. Planar sites are available on both muscovite and phlogopite while interlayer sites only on phlogopite under Na⁺ and Ca²⁺ electrolytes (not for K⁺ and Cs⁺). An interlayer expansion of phlogopite, as indicated by a newly appeared diffraction peak at ~6° 2-theta, occurred along with Eu(III) adsorption, which was also confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the initial Eu(III) concentrations, the concentration ratios between Eu(III) and Cs⁺, and the reaction sequences of Eu(III)-electrolytes-FA affected both the adsorption behaviour of Eu(III) and reversely the structural alteration of phlogopite. The sequential extraction showed that the adsorbed Eu(III) was mainly in the ion-exchangeable form while the addition of FA could increase the portion of coordinative species. The currently proposed Eu(III) adsorption mechanism can shed new light on predicting the migration of Ln/An(III) at the mica-rich solid-liquid interface on a molecular scale.

An approach for the efficient immobilization of 79Se using Fe-OOH modified GMZ bentonite

Because of high mobility, the immobilization of long-lived fission product 79Se (often existed as 79Se(IV) and 79Se(VI) anions) is a critical consideration in the repository of high-level radioactive waste. In this work, a Fe-OOH modified bentonite (Fe-OOH-bent) was synthesized as a potential filling material in the repository site for effective adsorption and present the migration of different species of 79Se. The adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR, XRD, XFS, zeta potential and BET to clarify its physical properties, compositions and structures. A good thermal and radiation stabilities of Fe-OOH-bent was confirmed by its stable uptake ratio for Se(IV) and Se(VI) compared to original samples. The batch experimental results show that Se(IV) and Se(VI) can be efficiently removed from aqueous by Fe-OOH-bent within 60 min with maximum adsorption capacities of 68.45 mg/g for Se(IV) and 40.47 mg/g for Se(VI) in the optimal conditions, indicating its high potential application in consideration of its simple synthesis process, low cost and high adsorption capacity in view of immobilization of 79Se. The surface species and variation of oxide state of Fe as well as Se(IV) and Se(VI) onto Fe-OOH-bent were investigated by XPS analysis. The values of relative area of Se(IV)–O and Se(VI)–O in XPS spectra followed the same tendency as their adsorption ratio with the variation of system pH, suggesting that the formation of complexes between selenium species and Fe-OOH-bent surface.

Sorption of Eu(III) at feldspar/water interface: effects of pH, organic matter, counter ions, and temperature

The sorption of Eu(III) on potassium feldspar (K-feldspar) was studied under various physicochemical conditions such as pH, temperature, counter ions and organic matter. The results showed that the sorption of Eu(III) on K-feldspar significantly increased with the increase of pH, and high Eu(III) concentration can inhibit such immobility to some extent. The presence of humic acid (HA) can increase the sorption of Eu(III) on K-feldspar in low pH range; while inhibit to a large extent under alkaline conditions. It is very interesting that at pH ~6.5, high ionic strength can promote the sorption of Eu(III) on K-feldspar in the presence of HA. In contrast, Eu(III) sorption was restricted obviously by NaCl in the absence of HA. The sorption procedure was involved with ion exchange and/or outer-sphere complexation as well as inner-sphere complexation. The presence of F− and PO4 3− dramatically enhanced Eu(III) sorption on K-feldspar, whereas both SO4 2− and CO3 2− had negative effects on Eu(III) sorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that Eu(III) tended to form hydrolysates at high initial concentration (3×10−4 mol/L) and high temperature (338 K).
