Abstract
The green energy transition requires rare earth elements (REE) for the permanent magnets used in electric cars and wind turbines. REE extraction and beneficiation are chemically intensive and highly damaging to the environment. We investigated the use of eggshell waste as a sustainable alternative sorbent for the capture and separation of REE from aqueous solutions. Hen eggshell calcite was placed in multi-REE (La, Nd, Dy) solutions at 25 to 205 °C for up to 3 months. A pervasive diffusion of the REE inside the eggshell calcite was observed along pathways formed by the intracrystalline organic matrix and calcite crystal boundaries. At 90 °C, kozoite (REECO3OH, orthorhombic) spherulites precipitate on the surface of the dissolving calcite. At 165 and 205 °C, an interface-coupled dissolution-precipitation mechanism is observed, resulting in the complete dissolution of the calcite shell and its pseudomorphic replacement by polycrystalline kozoite. At 205 °C, kozoite is slowly replaced by hydroxylbastnäsite (REECO3OH, hexagonal), the stable form of the rare earth hydroxycarbonate polymorphs. Our results demonstrate two potential applications of eggshell waste for the uptake of rare earth elements in solution: at low temperatures, as a mixed organic-inorganic adsorbent and absorbent, given sufficient sorption time; and at higher temperatures, as an efficient sacrificial template for the precipitation of rare earth hydroxycarbonates.

Abstract
Echinacea purpurea marc (EPM), a residual of echinacea herb after the extraction process, was used as a natural low-cost sorbent for competitive sorption of 152+154Eu(III), 60Co(II) and 134Cs(I) radionuclides. The EPM was ground to prepare it for use in the sorption process. The variables influencing the sorption process were assessed, including pH, contact time, concentrations of metal ions, and temperature. EPM was characterized by different analytical instruments such as FTIR, SEM, XRD, and DTA/TGA. pH 4.0 was selected as the ideal pH value for competitive sorption of the studied ions. Adsorption kinetics data found that the sorption followed a pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherm data was significantly better suited by the Langmuir isotherms in the case of Eu(III) ions while following Freundlich in the case of Co(II) and Cs(I) ions. Positive ΔHo values confirm the endothermic character of metal ion sorption onto EPM. The loading efficiencies of Eu(III), Co(II), and Cs(I) ions in the EPM column were 66.67%, 9.59%, and 4.81%, respectively. The EPM is a cost-effective and efficient separation of Eu(III) ions more than Cs(I) and Co(II) ions. Therefore, in the future, it will be a starting point for the separation of trivalent elements of lanthanide ions.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to investigate the potential of the efficient resource utilization of waste cow manure and corn straw in an agricultural ecosystem. In this study, a magnetic cow manure and straw biochar were synthesized by a co-precipitation method, and cadmium (Cd(II)) was removed by adsorption in aqueous solution. Several physicochemical characterization techniques were applied, including SEM, BET, Zeta, FTIR, Raman, XPS, and VSM. The effects of pH value, magnetic biochar content, adsorption kinetics, and isothermal adsorption on the adsorption of Cd(II) were investigated. The physicochemical characterizations revealed that the physical and chemical properties of the magnetic biochar were substantially changed compared to the unmodified biochar. The results showed that the surface of the biochar became rough, the number of oxygen (O)-containing functional groups increased, and the specific surface area increased. The results of the adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity was affected by pH, magnetic biochar addition, Cd(II) concentration, and adsorption time. The adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption experiments showed that the Cd(II) adsorption processes of the cow manure and corn straw magnetic biochars were consistent with the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results also showed that the Cd(II) adsorption effect of cow manure magnetic biochar was found to be more effective than that of corn straw magnetic biochar. The optimal conditions for Cd(II) adsorption were 800 ℃ for cow manure magnetic biochar, with a pH value of 5 and 0.14 g biochar addition, and 600 ℃ for straw magnetic biochar with a pH value of 8 and 0.12 g biochar addition. In conclusion, the cow manure magnetic biochar was an effective adsorbent for the absorption of Cd(II) in wastewater.

Abstract
By using methyl orange (MO) removal as a model reaction, the best temperatures for processing eggshells are 750 °C and above to obtain biobased CaO materials, a raw material for producing CuCa hydroxy double salt (HDS) materials with high efficiency in treatments of highly polluted wastewater (the initial concentration of MO is 500 ppm). Characterization techniques employed in this study include power X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and the colorimetric method, as well as energy-dispersive X-ray, infrared-, and electron spin resonance spectroscopies. Complete MO removal and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) efficiencies (>90%) can be achieved after 3 min treatments of the aqueous MO with the calcined eggshell-derived CuCa HDS materials. The spent, deactivated HDS materials can be regenerated by an acid wash method. The activity of CuCa HDS materials in MO removal is unaffected by eggshell sources, implying that sorting steps may be unnecessary when eggshell food waste (duck, quail, and hen eggshells) is collected to produce biobased CaO. The findings of this study demonstrated that eggshells can be used in place of limestone and could be a more sustainable, renewable, and cost-effective source for material development and other applications.

Abstract
With the increase of organic emissions in production and human life, the pollution control of organic is now an urgent problem in the environmental field. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization rice husk-loaded Al-modified biochar (Al-BC) was synthesized, and the results of scanning electron microscopy could be used to determine that Al oxide composite was loaded on the surface of the material. The specific surface area was 57.049 m2 g-1, pore volume was 0.254 cm3 g-1, and average pore diameter was 8.922 nm for BC and 109.617 m2 g-1, 0.215 cm3 g-1, and 3.969 nm for Al-BC, respectively. The control effects of these two adsorption materials on organic pollutant ibuprofen (IBU) under different pH conditions were also investigated. The research results show that the adsorption capacity of Al-BC (30.24-1.48 mg g-1) is better than BC (19.98-0.92 mg g-1) at pH from 2 to 11. Solution pH plays a crucial role in IBU adsorption from organic solution. The Langmuir fitting results show that at pH = 7, the saturated adsorption capacity of IBU on BC could reach up to 18.68 mg g-1; the adsorption capacity on Al-BC was 60.49 mg g-1. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic, and increased disorder. The adsorption material prepared in this study could provide a reference for organic pollution control in water.

Abstract
Radiocesium remediation is of great significance for the sustainable development of nuclear energy and ecological protection. It is very challenging for the effective recovery of 137Cs from aqueous solutions due to its strong radioactivity, solubility and mobility. Herein, the efficient recovery of Cs+ ions has been achieved by three layered vanadyl oxalatophosphates, namely (NH4)2[(VO)2(HPO4)2C2O4]·5 H2O (NVPC), Na2[(VO)2(HPO4)2C2O4]·2 H2O (SVPC), and K2.5[(VO)2(HPO4)1.5(PO4)0.5(C2O4)]·4.5 H2O (KVPC). NVPC exhibits the ultra-fast kinetics (within 5 min) and high adsorption capacity for Cs+ (qmCs = 471.58 mg/g). It also holds broad pH durability and excellent radiation stability. Impressively, the entry of Cs+ can be directly visualized by the single-crystal structural analysis, and thus the underlying mechanism of Cs+ capture by NVPC from aqueous solutions has been illuminated at the molecular level. This is a pioneering work in the removal of radioactive ions by metal oxalatophosphate materials which highlights the great potential of metal oxalatophosphates for radionuclide remediation.

Utilization of synthetic nano-cryptomelane for enhanced scavenging of cesium and cobalt ions from single and binary solutions. J Radioanal Nucl Chem 2022. Abstract
AbstractThe feasibility of using nano-cryptomelane for elimination of cobalt and cesium metal ions from their single and binary solutions was studied. In this respect, the material was prepared and characterized to confirm its chemical composition and structure. Results illustrate that the synthesized nano-cryptomelane has a tunnel structure with particle size ranged between 4 and 6 nm. The material feasibility was detected by conducting a series of batch experiments for determination of the kinetic and equilibrium performance of the removal process. All characteristic Raman bands for Mn–O lattice vibrations within the (2 × 2) tunnel structure of MnO6 octahedral are observed which confirm formation of nano-cryptomelane. The specific surface area (SSA) for nano-cryptomelane was calculated and equal to 299.03 m2/g while the surface fractal information (Ds) was2.53. The process sensitivity to changes of H+ concentration is attributed to changes in structural elements-species distribution at the solid/aqueous interface. The pH optimum value was desired at pH 5 for exchange of Cs+ and/or Co2+ with K+ ions. The equilibrium studies show that Langmuir isotherm model was more fitted to the experimental data than that of Freundlich model.

Abstract
Abstract
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes/strontium hydroxyapatite (MWCNT/SH) composite was synthesized, where CNTs were applied to improve the properties of HAP and increase the reinforcement of the composite. The composite CNTs/Sr-HAP and its precursor Sr-HAP were successfully applied in removal of Co(II) and Eu(III) ions from aqueous solutions. Sorption of Co(II) and Eu(III) onto the synthesized sorbents was investigated as a function of contact time and pH. The synthesized sorbents highly removed the studied radionuclides from their aqueous solutions with necessary time of 6 h to reach equilibrium. The maximum sorption capacity was 33.31 and 48.93 mg g−1 for Co(II) sorption onto Sr-HAP and CNTs/Sr-HAP composite at pH 4.5, while it was 115.74 and 127.11 mg g−1 for sorption of Eu(III) onto Sr-HAP and CNTs/Sr-HAP composite at pH 2.5, respectively. Desorption of Co(II) and Eu(III) from loaded samples was studied using various eluents and maximum recovery was obtained using FeCl3 and HCl solutions. Co(II) was completely separated from Eu(III) by a ratio of 85.1 % using Cd(NO3)2 as an eluent in CNTs/Sr-HAP composite packed column.

JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2018; 352:1-16. [PMID: 29567406 DOI: 10.1016/j.jhazmat.2018.03.020] [Citation(s) in RCA: 20] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/13/2017] [Revised: 03/10/2018] [Accepted: 03/12/2018] [Indexed: 06/08/2023]
Abstract
Nano-cryptomelane was prepared and characterized using SEM with mapping, HRTEM, FT-IR spectra, thermal analysis and surface area. The diameter distribution of nano-cryptomelane was found to be 4-6 nm. Sorption performance of the prepared material was studied for the removal of Co2+, Cs+ and Pb2+ from a multi-system solution of equal molar ratio, 1:1:1. The sorption capacity of nano-cryptomelane was found to be 179.6, 442.6 and 716.9 mg/g for Co2+, Cs+ and Pb2+, respectively. The kinetic studies revealed that the sorption process obeys non-linear pseudo-second-order model and is controlled by an intra-particle diffusion mechanism. The equilibrium isotherm investigations outlined that the extended Langmuir isotherm model fits the data reasonably well and it is more applicable than Freundlich multicomponent sorption isotherm. The value of diffusion coefficient for the three metal ions is in the order 10-17 m2/s which indicates the chemisorption nature of the process. The desorption percentage attains the maximum value (98.13%, 97.29 and 97.04 for lead, cesium and cobalt ions, respectively) using 0.7 mol/L of HNO3. This revealed that nano-cryptomelane can be regenerated and reused for farther sorption of Pb2+, Cs+ and Co2+ from wastewater.

Abstract
Abstract
Green composites emphasize renewable starting materials for better economy using biomass materials. Therefore, low-cost composite biosorbent was prepared by modification of eggshell material using heteropoly acid for removal of strontium ions from aqueous solution. The resulted composite was characterized and evaluated for the sorption process using the batch technique. Low concentration of strontium ions was used to evaluate the sorption sensitivity of the prepared composite. The obtained experimental results illustrated that the modification process of eggshell material enhanced the percent uptake from 49.9 to 95.7%. From kinetic studies, the sorption of strontium ions follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isotherm studies indicated that Langmuir is more applicable than Freundlich isotherm. Moreover, Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm was studied. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the sorption process is spontaneous and has endothermic nature. Strontium ions can be desorbed from the modified eggshell using HNO3, desorption percent was found to be 96.4%; the results revealed the reusability of the modified eggshell for further sorption.

Abstract
Abstract
The radioactive wastes from different activities have to be safely disposed of and isolated from the human environment. The retardation of radioactive materials by designed barriers is originally controlled by the sorption ability of the mineral compositions. In this work, a naturally available mineral composite, a hydroxyl magnesium silicate (HMS) was investigated as potential natural inorganic sorbent for the retention of long-lived radionuclides (134Cs, 60Co and 152+154Eu) from aqueous solutions. The factors affecting the sorption process, such as contact time and pH were evaluated. Furthermore X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal and thermogravimetry analyses (DTA/TGA) measurements were examined in order to assess the physicochemical properties of the magnesium silicate mineral. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms fitted the result s substantially better than the Flory–Huggins isotherm and the sorption was found to follow pseudo-first order kinetic model. The proposed mineral has been successfully applied for the sorption of 134Cs, 60Co and 152+154Eu radionuclides from real radioactive waste. The results indicated that about 97.4–99% of 134Cs, 60Co and 152+154Eu radionuclides were efficiently retained onto the HMS mineral. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the HMS mineral is an economic and efficient retaining material for environmental hazardous migration and/or leakage of some radionuclides such as 134Cs, 60Co and 152+154Eu and trivalent actinide (241Am, 242mAm and 243Am) ions. Therefore, this study could be used as a starting point to establish and consider that mineral as an engineered barrier around the disposal facilities at the nuclear activity centres.
