Retention profile and kinetics characteristics of the radionuclide 90-Sr(II) onto kaolinite

Anisotropic hydrogel scaffold by flow-induced stereolithography 3D printing technique

Essential organs, such as the heart and liver, contain a unique porous network that allows oxygen and nutrients to be exchanged, with distinct random to ordered regions displaying varying degrees of strength. A novel technique, referred to here as flow-induced lithography, was developed. This technique generates tunable anisotropic three-dimensional (3D) structures. The ink for this bioprinting technique was made of titanium dioxide nanorods (Ti) and kaolinite nanoclay (KLT) dispersed in a GelMA/PEGDA polymeric suspension. By controlling the flow rate, aligned particle microstructures were achieved in the suspensions. The application of UV light to trigger the polymerization of the photoactive prepolymer freezes the oriented particles in the polymer network. Because the viability test was successful in shearing suspensions containing cells, the flow-induced lithography technique can be used with both acellular scaffolds and cell-laden structures. Fabricated hydrogels show outstanding mechanical properties resembling human tissues, as well as significant cell viability (> 95 %) over one week. As a result of this technique and the introduction of bio-ink, a novel approach has been pioneered for developing anisotropic tissue implants utilizing low-viscosity biomaterials.

Evaluation of the Effect of Polyethylenimine on Boron Adsorption by Soil Minerals

The removal of hazardous ions from water is crucial for safeguarding both the environment and human health. Soil minerals, integral components of soil, play a vital role as adsorbents for various contaminants, including heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and detergents. This study investigates the interaction between boron ions and soil minerals (gibbsite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite) in the presence of polyethylenimine (PEI). The minerals underwent characterization based on specific surface area, particle size distribution, zeta potential, and the presence of functional groups. The influence of PEI addition on the stability of the soil mineral suspension was evaluated by turbidimetry. Mineral-boron and mineral-boron-PEI interactions were explored under varying conditions, including pH, initial boron concentration, and mineral quantity, with all adsorption experiments conducted over 24 hours. Using the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacity of the studied minerals was determined for boron both without and in the presence of PEI. For gibbsite, kaolinite and montmorillonite, it was 30.63, 24.55 and 26.62 mg g-1, respectively, while in the presence of PEI, it increased to 33.11, 26.61 and 45.47 mg g-1, respectively. The addition of PEI enhanced boron adsorption from aqueous solutions, increasing the removal efficiency from 65 % to about 80 %.

Sorption Characteristics and Chromatographic Separation of 90Y3+ from 90Sr2+ from Aqueous Media by Chelex-100 (Anion Ion Exchange) Packed Column

There is growing demand for separation of 90Y carrier free from 90Sr coexisting to produce high purity 90Y essential for radiopharmaceutical uses. Thus, in this context the sorption profiles of Y3+ and Sr2+ from aqueous solutions containing diethylenetriaminepenta acetic acid (DTPA), ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA), acetic acid, citric acid, or NaCl onto Chelex-100 (anion ion exchange) solid sorbent were critically studied for developing an efficient and low-cost methodology for selective separation of Y3+ from Sr2+ ions (1.0 × 10-5 M). Batch experiments displayed relative chemical extraction percentage (98 ± 5.4%) of Y3+ from aqueous acetic acid solution onto Chelex-100 (anion ion exchanger), whereas Sr2+ species showed no sorption. Hence, a selective separation of Y3+ from its parent 90Sr2+ has been established based upon percolation of the aqueous solution of Y3+ and Sr2+ ions containing acetic acid at pH 1-2 through Chelex-100 sorbent packed column at a 2 mL min-1 flow rate. Y3+ species were retained quantitatively while Sr2+ ions were not sorbed and passed through the sorbent packed column without extraction. The sorbed Y3+ species were then recovered from the sorbent packed column with HNO3 (1.0 M) at a 1.0 mL min-1 flow rate. A dual extraction mechanism comprising absorption associated to "weak-base anion exchanger" and "solvent extraction" of Y3+ as (YCl6)3- and an extra part for "surface adsorption" of Y3+ by the sorbent is proposed. The established method was validated by measuring the radiochemical (99.2 ± 2 1%), radionuclide purity and retardation factor (Rf = 10.0 ± 0.1 cm) of 90Y3+ recovered in the eluate. Ultimately, the sorbent packed column also presented high stability for reusing 2-3 cycles without drop in its efficiency (±5%) towards Y3+ uptake and relative chemical recovery. A proposed flow sheet describing the analytical procedures for the separation of 90Y3+ from 90Sr2+ using chelating Chelex 100 (anion exchange) packed column is also included.

Effect of Ca(II) on U(VI) and Np(VI) retention on Ca-bentonite and clay minerals at hyperalkaline conditions - New insights from batch sorption experiments and luminescence spectroscopy

In deep geological repositories for radioactive waste, interactions of radionuclides with mineral surfaces occur under complex geochemical conditions involving complex solution compositions and high pH resulting from degradation of cementitious geo-engineered barriers. Ca²⁺ cations have been hypothesized to play an important role as mediators for the retention of U(VI) on Ca-bentonite at (hyper)alkaline conditions, despite the anionic character of both the mineral surface and the aqueous uranyl species. To gain deeper insight into this sorption process, the effect of Ca²⁺ on U(VI) and Np(VI) retention on alumosilicate minerals has been comprehensively evaluated, using batch sorption experiments and time-resolved laser-induced luminescence spectroscopy (TRLFS). Sorption experiments with Ca²⁺ or Sr²⁺ and zeta potential measurements showed that the alkaline earth metals sorb strongly onto Ca-bentonite at pH 8-13, leading to a partial compensation of the negative surface charge, thereby generating potential sorption sites for anionic actinyl species. U(VI) and Np(VI) sorption experiments in the absence and presence of Ca²⁺ or Sr²⁺ confirmed that these cations strongly enhance radionuclide retention on kaolinite and muscovite at pH ≥ 10. Concerning the underlying retention mechanisms, site-selective TRLFS provided spectroscopic proof for two dominating U(VI) species at the alumosilicate surfaces: (i) A ternary U(VI) complex, where U(VI) is bound to the surface via bridging Ca cations with the configuration surface ≡ Ca - OH - U(VI) and, (ii) U(VI) sorption into the interlayer space of calcium (aluminum) silicate hydrates (C-(A-)S-H), which form as secondary phases in the presence of Ca due to partial dissolution of alumosilicates under hyperalkaline conditions. Consequently, the present study confirms that alkaline earth elements, which are ubiquitous in geologic systems, enable strong retention of hexavalent actinides on clay minerals under hyperalkaline repository conditions.

A Study of Sr Sorption Behavior in Claystone from a Candidate High-Level Radioactive Waste Geological Disposal Site under the Action of FeOOH Colloids

Colloids have a significant influence on the migration of nuclides in claystone, which is an important geological barrier. The sorption of strontium on claystone in the presence of FeOOH colloids was investigated in samples from the Suhongtu site, a candidate high-level radioactive waste disposal site in China. The effects of colloid amount, solid content, and pH were investigated by batch tests, and the sorption reaction mechanism was analyzed by kinetic modeling and microscopic characterization techniques. The results indicate that the sorption of Sr by claystone increased with the solids content, and the claystone had a stronger Sr sorption capacity under alkaline conditions. The Sr sorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, which revealed that the progress is affected by physical diffusion and chemical sorption. Furthermore, the microscopic characterization results demonstrate that cation exchange reactions and surface complex reactions are the main sorption mechanisms for Sr sorption on claystone. Ca and Mg plasmas in claystone minerals can have cation replacement reactions with Sr, and functional groups such as -OH and [CO₃]^2- can have complexation reactions with Sr to adsorb Sr on the surface of the claystone. Additionally, the presence of the FeOOH colloid inhibited the sorption effect of claystone slightly. The FeOOH colloid could occupy sorption sites on the claystone surface, which reduces the activity of the functional groups and inhibits the sorption of Sr on claystone.

Effectiveness and Characterization of Novel Mineral Clay in Cd2+ Adsorption Process: Linear and Non-Linear Isotherm Regression Analysis

The excellent adsorption properties of clay minerals make the optimization of heavy metal removal the subject of numerous research projects. In the present study, ASLAVITAL cosmetic clay (ACC) powder was applied for the removal of Cd2+ from water. The main deposit of ACC clay is the Pădurea Craiului Mountains in Romania. A wide range of morpho-structural approaches (SEM, EDX, FTIR, Raman, XRD) were used to characterize the morphology and elemental composition of the adsorbent. As expected for clay minerals, Al (Wt(%) = 11.4 ± 0.9) and Si (Wt(%) = 13.7 ± 1.4) are the main constituents of ACC. After adsorption, Wt(%) = 0.2 ± 0.01 Cd2+ was detected in the sample. As proved before, the initial metal concentration is the primary influencing factor; therefore, batch adsorption of 10–160 mg/L Cd2+ was investigated. After 190 min, an efficiency of 99% was reached, and the quantity in equilibrium increased from 1–8 mg/g. The best fit in linear form was obtained for the Langmuir II. model, where R2 = 0.954 (RL = 0.037–0.027). Based on linear isotherm models, physical bonds formed between ACC and Cd2+ during the favorable adsorption. For the non-linear fits, the Liu model proved to be the best R2 = 0.965, χ2 = 1.101. Pseudo-II-order kinetic model described the experimental data R2 = 0.988–0.999; qexp and qcalc were almost identical (the differences ranged 0.03–0.34).
