Mechanism of strontium sorption by the mixed nickel–potassium ferrocyanide based on hydrated titanium dioxide

Synthesis and Investigation of the Properties of Biphasic Hybrid Composites Based on Bentonite, Copper Hexacyanoferrate, Acrylamide and Acrylic Acid Hydrogel

This article presents a study of the synthesis and characterization of new biphasic hybrid composite materials consisting of intercalated complexes (ICC) of natural mineral bentonite with copper hexaferrocyanide (phase I), which are incorporated into the bulk of the polymer matrix (phase II). It has been established that the sequential modification of bentonite with copper hexaferrocyanide and introduction of acrylamide and acrylic acid cross-linked copolymers into its volume by means of in situ polymerization promote the formation of a heterogeneous porous structure in the resulting hybrid material. The sorption abilities of prepared hybrid composite toward radionuclides of liquid radioactive waste (LRW) have been studied, and the mechanism for binding radionuclide metal ions with the components of the hybrid composition have been described.

Removal of strontium radionuclides from liquid scintillation waste and environmental water samples

Strontium-90 (t_1/2 = 29 y) is one of the most concerned isotopes in both nuclear accidents and reprocessing of nuclear fuel. In this study, the removal of strontium using low cost and valuable Dowex-HCR-S/S (DHS) resin was achieved. The kinetic and equilibrium sorption studies have been investigated using batch technique. The results of kinetic studies showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was found to correlate well with the experimental data. Equilibrium data were also analyzed by sorption isotherm models indicating that the monolayer capacity of Sr(II) at equilibrium is 400.0 mg/g. It was concluded that resin has an efficient sorption capacity compared to many sorbents. The thermodynamic parameters of the removal (ΔH^o, ΔS^o, and ΔG^o) were also determined. The removal process was endothermic and spontaneous. The resin has been successfully applied for the removal of ⁸⁵Sr from organic liquid scintillator waste and some environmental waters such as tap water, river water, sea water and ground water samples. The present work concludes that the low-cost and commercial DHS resin used under these conditions has a major possibility as an efficacious material for the removal of ⁹⁰Sr from environmental and real radioactive wastewaters. It can therefore have a site in the treatment of radioactive liquid waste because it is of an affordable and commercially available retention material.

Amidoxime Functionalization of Algal/Polyethyleneimine Beads for the Sorption of Sr(II) from Aqueous Solutions

There is a need for developing new sorbents that incorporate renewable resources for the treatment of metal-containing solutions. Algal-polyethyleneimine beads (APEI) (reinforced with alginate) are functionalized by grafting amidoxime groups (AO-APEI). Physicochemical characteristics of the new material are characterized using FTIR, XPS, TGA, SEM, SEM-EDX, and BET. AO-APEI beads are tested for the recovery of Sr(II) from synthetic solutions after pH optimization (≈ pH 6). Uptake kinetics is fast (equilibrium ≈ 60-90 min). Sorption isotherm (fitted by the Langmuir equation) shows remarkable sorption capacity (≈ 189 mg Sr g-1). Sr(II) is desorbed using 0.2 M HCl/0.5 M CaCl2 solution; sorbent recycling over five cycles shows high stability in terms of sorption/desorption performances. The presence of competitor cations is studied in relation to the pH; the selectivity for Sr(II) is correlated to the softness parameter. Finally, the recovery of Sr(II) is carried out in complex solutions (seawater samples): AO-APEI is remarkably selective over highly concentrated metal cations such as Na(I), K(I), Mg(II), and Ca(II), with weaker selectivity over B(I) and As(V). AO-APEI appears to be a promising material for selective recovery of strontium from complex solutions (including seawater).

Evaluation of hydroxyapatite/poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid) for sorptive removal of strontium ions from aqueous solution

A composite polymer, hydroxyapatite/poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid), was synthesized by gamma-induced polymerization. The factors affecting the sorption process were evaluated. The removal increased with time and achieved equilibrium after 1 h for all initial concentration ranges (10-50 mg/L). The highest removal of Sr(II) was achieved using 50 mg/L at pH 6. The sorption process was found to follow a pseudo-first-order mechanism. The equilibrium data are best described by the Langmuir model, with a monolayer capacity of 53.59 mg/g. The values of thermodynamic parameters indicate that the sorption process is endothermic (ΔH > 0), increases randomness (ΔS > 0) and is spontaneous (ΔG < 0). The results imply that the composite could be used as a promising low-cost material for the removal of radionuclides from radioactive waste.
