Comparison and validation of methods for the determination of 90Sr by Cerenkov counting in biological and sediment samples, including green chemistry metrics

An overview of automated flow systems for total and isotopic analysis of strontium and yttrium in samples of environmental interest

Due to the different uses of radioactivity during the last decades, there has been an increase in the concentration of natural and artificial radionuclides in the environment. This, along with some accidents with a high affect public opinion (for example, Chernobyl and Fukushima), have led to the growth and establishment of environmental radioactivity monitoring programs. Currently, trends in legislation and research are focused on the development of accurate, precise, reliable and fast analytical methods with low limits of detection (LOD) for radionuclides determination, such as strontium and yttrium, in environmental samples. In this paper, two comprehensive reviews and four automated analytical systems for total and isotopic determination of yttrium and strontium are presented. The developed methods have been applied in the analysis of environmental samples with low concentrations of these analytes. These methodologies have been automated by exploiting flow analysis techniques, such as multi-syringe flow injection analysis (MSFIA), Sequential injection analysis (SIA) and laboratory-on-valve (LOV) systems, achieving a minimal handling and low consumption of samples and reagents, a significant reduction in waste generation and a high frequency of analysis. In the developed methodologies, some spectrometric methods such as ICP-OES and ICP-MS have been implemented as detection techniques instead of radiometric detectors obtaining a fully automated, low-cost and fast yttrium and strontium determinations.

Modified QuEChERS Method for Extracting Thiamethoxam and Imidacloprid from Stingless Bees: Development, Application, and Green Metrics

In the present study, a method for the determination of residues of the neonicotinoid insecticides thiamethoxam and imidacloprid in the stingless bee Melipona scutellaris Latreille (1811) was optimized through a factorial design, tested using green metrics, and then applied to exposed bees. It combines the extraction with a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method and the determination by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Different parameters such as the mass of the sample, dispersive sorbents, and elution solvents were assessed. Method validation parameters were checked and include sensitivity, specificity, and linearity. The limit of quantification of 0.0025 μg g^-1 was obtained for both insecticides, where accuracy was 94%-100% with satisfactory intraday and interday precisions (relative standard deviation <10%). The qualified method was applied to orally and topically exposed bee samples, and the results indicated that it is suitable for the determination and quantification of neonicotinoid pesticide residues in this species. Moreover, green analytical metrics like the National Environmental Methods Index, Eco Scale score, high-performance liquid chromatography with an environmental assessment tool (HPLC-EAT), waste generation, and amount of sample were compared with methods described in the literature involving neonicotinoid analysis in honeybees. As a result, the present study displayed the highest Eco Scale score and HPLC-EAT score and the second smallest amount of sample and waste generated. Thus, the method meets green analytical metrics more than other methods. In this sense, besides the application, the multicriteria decision analysis tool employed suggests that this is a good option as a green analytical method. Levels of radionuclide concentrations in benthic invertebrate species from the Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean, during 2012-2018

Baseline levels of radionuclides in the marine environment of the Balearic Islands in Western Mediterranean have not been reported in literature. Because of their ecological role and acknowledged sensitivity to pollutants, herein, the activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po, ⁴⁰K, ²¹⁰Pb, ⁹⁰Sr, and ²³⁴Th were measured in two types of benthic invertebrate species (mussels and sea urchins) sampled during 2012-2018. The activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Po, ⁴⁰K, ²¹⁰Pb, and ²³⁴Th ranged from 38 ± 1 to 325 ± 11 Bq kg^-1 dry weight (d.w.), 220 ± 10 to 996 ± 46 Bq kg^-1 d.w., ND (lower than the limit of detection) to 55 ± 8 Bq kg^-1 d.w., and ND to 70 ± 15 Bq kg^-1 d.w., respectively. In all cases, no artificial ⁹⁰Sr activity was detected in the collected samples. The committed effective dose to humans was calculated to be in the range of 48-640 μSv year^-1.
