Abstract
A reaction of acyl chlorides derived from 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acids with piperazine allows the preparation of the corresponding 24-membered macrocycles in good yield. The structural and spectral properties of these new macrocyclic ligands were thoroughly investigated, revealing promising coordination properties towards f-elements (Am, Eu). It was shown that the prepared ligands can be used for selective extraction of Am(III) from alkaline-carbonate media in presence of Eu(III) with an SFAm/Eu up to 40. Their extraction efficiency is higher than calixarene-type extraction of the Am(III) and Eu(III) pair. Composition of macrocycle-metal complex with Eu(III) was investigated by luminescence and UV-vis spectroscopy. The possibility of such ligands to form complexes of L:Eu = 1:2 stoichiometry is revealed.

Abstract
99Tc is one of the most problematic nuclear fuel products due to its long half-life and high environmental mobility. Direct removal of TcO4- from the highly alkaline solution of nuclear fuel is a serious and challenging environmental issue. In this work, the first efficient synthetic approach introducing halogens into a two-dimensional metal-organic framework, named Mn-MOF, is established using MnCl2·4H2O coordinating with neutral nitrogen-donor ligand, showing ultrahigh stability in alkaline aqueous even under 1 M NaOH. The luxuriant Mn-Cl bonds and ordered hydrophobic pore channels enable the Mn-MOF to have an efficient adsorption capacity for ReO4- with a large capacity (403 mg g-1), which is higher than most MOF adsorbents. More importantly, the Mn-MOF shows an excellent selectivity toward ReO4- in high-density competitive anions, such as NO3- and SO42-. Moreover, the outstanding performance of Mn-MOF in removing ReO4- endowed it successfully separated ReO4- from the simulated Savannah River Site (SRS) high-level waste (HLW) stream with high removal of 66.84% at the phase ratio of 10. The adsorption mechanism is further demonstrated by FT-IR, XPS analysis, and DFT calculation, showing that the ReO4- can selectively interact with Mn-Cl bonds and imidazole groups, forming unique halogen bonds Cl-O-Re, and a series of hydrogen bonds, respectively. This work suggests a new approach to the removal of TcO4- from nuclear fuel.

Task-Specific Tailored Cationic Polymeric Network with High Base-Resistance for Unprecedented 99TcO 4 - Cleanup from Alkaline Nuclear Waste. ACS CENTRAL SCIENCE 2021; 7:1441-1450. Abstract
Direct removal of 99TcO4 - from alkaline nuclear waste is desirable because of the nuclear waste management and environmental protection relevant to nuclear energy but is yet to be achieved given that combined features of decent base-resistance and high uptake selectivity toward anions with low charge density have not been integrated into a single anion-exchange material. Herein, we proposed a strategy overcoming these challenges by rationally modifying the imidazolium unit of a cationic polymeric network (SCU-CPN-4) with bulky alkyl groups avoiding its ring-opening reaction induced by OH- because of the steric hindrance effect. This significantly improves not only the base-resistance but also the affinity toward TcO4 - as a result of enhanced hydrophobicity, compared to other existing anion-exchange materials. More importantly, SCU-CPN-4 exhibits record high uptake selectivity, fast sorption kinetics, sufficient robustness, and promising reusability for removing 99TcO4 - from the simulated high-level waste stream at the U.S. Savannah River Site, a typical alkaline nuclear waste, in both batch experiment and dynamic column separation test for the first time.
