Assessment of environmental radioactivity in soil samples from Bartın Province, Turkey

Assessment of radioactivity level and associated radiological hazard in riverbed samples within industrial areas

Terrestrial gamma radiation is one of the major outdoor radiation exposures to the general public that varies substantially based on the type and geological properties of the soil. The objective of this study is to evaluate the naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) distribution and assess the hazard parameters in the riverbank soil within various industrial zones in the densely populated Dhaka and Chattogram cities of Bangladesh. The mean activities of 226Ra (37 ± 3), 232Th (58 ± 4), and 40K (1129 ± 18) Bqkg-1 in the assessed soil samples were found to be slightly higher than the world average values 32, 35, and 420 Bqkg-1, respectively. The mean radium equivalent activity (207.49 Bqkg-1) and the external and internal hazard indices were within the recommended limits of 370 Bqkg-1 and <1, respectively. The mean absorbed dose rate (99.47 nGyhr-1), annual effective dose (0.12 mSva-1), ELCR (4.27 × 10-4), and gamma level index (1.58) exceeded the world average values 59 nGyhr-1, 0.07 mSva-1, 2.9 × 10-4, and 1 respectively. However, the studied areas are safe from a radiological viewpoint with no radiation health hazard to the people. The results of this study can be utilized to produce factual baseline data for future studies.

Radiological assessment of urban soil samples in the residents of a central Anatolian volcanic province, Turkey

The concentration of natural and anthropogenic radionuclides, emanation fraction (EF), and mass (χM) and area (χA) exhalation rate of 222Rn in urban soil samples collected from dwelling areas in Nevşehir city located in a region known as the central Anatolian volcanic province of Turkey were determined using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 228Ra, 40K and 137Cs were measured as 60.2 ± 3.8, 50.1 ± 2.8, 631.0 ± 29.7 and 5.5 ± 0.4 Bq/kg, respectively. The average concentration of 222Rn in soil and air was estimated as 27 kBq/m3 and 84 Bq/m3, respectively. The average values of EF, χM and χA were found as 20%, 25.4 μBq/kg⋅s and 20.2 mBq/m2⋅s, respectively. The average values of outdoor absorbed gamma dose rate, external and internal annual effective dose and lifetime cancer risk estimated for radiological assessment were found as 85 nGy/h, 104 µSv/y, 797 µSv/y and 4.1 × 10-4, respectively.

Natural radioactivity and its radiological implications from soils and rocks in Jaintiapur area, North-east Bangladesh

Natural radioactivity concentrations in recent alluvial soils from swampy areas and Tertiary rocks from Jaintiapur were measured using gamma-ray spectrometer equipped with HPGe detector. The average radioactivity concentration of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K were 47 ± 6, 64 ± 5 and 762 ± 40 Bqkg⁻¹ in soils, whereas, 25 ± 2, 37 ± 4 and 884 ± 41 Bqkg⁻¹ in rock samples, respectively. Average radioactivity concentrations of studied soil and rock samples exceeded the world average except ²²⁶Ra for rocks. Radio-elemental ratios suggest that an oxic depositional environment with low uranium and high thorium content. Regarding radiological hazard indices, radium equivalent activities (Ra_eq), external hazard index (H_ex) and internal hazard index (H_in) was found to be below the world permissible limits. Whereas, absorbed dose rate (D), and annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE) averages exceeded the world admissible values. Statistical studies show that radioactivity for ²²⁶Ra and ²³²Th linked to a source enriched in radioactive minerals and ⁴⁰K related to a different sources high in K enriched minerals.
