Analysis of Wildfire Visualization Systems for Research and Training: Are They Up for the Challenge of the Current State of Wildfires?

Wildfires affect many regions across the world. The accelerated progression of global warming has amplified their frequency and scale, deepening their impact on human life, the economy, and the environment. The temperature rise has been driving wildfires to behave unpredictably compared to those previously observed, challenging researchers and fire management agencies to understand the factors behind this behavioral change. Furthermore, this change has rendered fire personnel training outdated and lost its ability to adequately prepare personnel to respond to these new fires. Immersive visualization can play a key role in tackling the growing issue of wildfires. Therefore, this survey reviews various studies that use immersive and non-immersive data visualization techniques to depict wildfire behavior and train first responders and planners. This paper identifies the most useful characteristics of these systems. While these studies support knowledge creation for certain situations, there is still scope to comprehensively improve immersive systems to address the unforeseen dynamics of wildfires.

Use of virtual reality exercises in disaster preparedness training: A scoping review

Background

The scope and number of disasters have increased over the years. This has called for more robust disaster preparedness training and plans. The use of virtual reality exercises in addition to tabletop exercises is considered a new approach to the preparation of disaster preparedness plans. Virtual reality exercises are being developed to either replace or complement current traditional approaches to disaster preparedness training.

Objectives

To review and summarize the current existing literature regarding the effectiveness, advantages and limitations of using virtual reality exercises in disaster preparedness as a complementary/replacement mechanism for real-time drills and tabletop exercises.

Methods

In this scoping review, we searched PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, PLOS, and Google Scholar for research publications involving virtual reality exercises in disaster training from 2008 to 2022 using "AND" and "OR" operators for the keywords "disaster," "preparedness," "virtual reality," and "tabletop." From a total of 333 articles that resulted in our search and were then evaluated by the authors, 55 articles were finally included in this review.

Results

Virtual reality exercises are found to be better in the formulation of disaster preparedness plans compared to tabletop exercises. Virtual reality exercises can be used as the primary means of creating a real-life-like experience in disaster preparedness training and proved at least as better complementary to tabletop exercises. Virtual reality exercises have many advantages over traditional real-life or tabletop exercises and are more cost-effective, but some drawbacks are still identified.

Conclusion

The advantages of virtual reality exercises are remarkable and underline their benefits and uses versus costs. We highly encourage decision-makers and institutions dealing in disaster preparedness to adopt using virtual reality exercises in training for disaster preparedness.

Metaverse applied to musculoskeletal pathology: Orthoverse and Rehabverse

The Metaverse is 'an integrated network of 3D virtual worlds.' It incorporates digitally created realities into the real world, involves virtual copies of existing places and changes the physical reality by superimposing digital aspects, allowing its users to interact with these elements in an immersive, real-time experience. The applications of the Metaverse are numerous, with an increasing number of experiences in the field of musculoskeletal disease management. In the field of medical training, the Metaverse can help facilitate the learning experience and help develop complex clinical skills. In clinical care, the Metaverse can help clinicians perform orthopedic surgery more accurately and safely and can improve pain management, the performance of rehabilitation techniques and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Virtualization can also optimize aspects of healthcare information and management, increasing the effectiveness of procedures and the functioning of organizations. This optimization can be especially relevant in departments that are under significant care provider pressure. However, we must not lose sight of the fundamental challenges that still need to be solved, such as ensuring patient privacy and fairness. Several studies are underway to assess the feasibility and safety of the Metaverse.

The development of new remote technologies in disaster medicine education: A scoping review

Background

Remote teaching and online learning have significantly changed the responsiveness and accessibility after the COVID-19 pandemic. Disaster medicine (DM) has recently gained prominence as a critical issue due to the high frequency of worldwide disasters, especially in 2021. The new artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced technologies and concepts have recently progressed in DM education.

Objectives

The aim of this article is to familiarize the reader with the remote technologies that have been developed and used in DM education over the past 20 years.

Literature scoping reviews

Mobile edge computing (MEC), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)/drones, deep learning (DL), and visual reality stimulation, e.g., head-mounted display (HMD), are selected as promising and inspiring designs in DM education.

Methods

We performed a comprehensive review of the literature on the remote technologies applied in DM pedagogy for medical, nursing, and social work, as well as other health discipline students, e.g., paramedics. Databases including PubMed (MEDLINE), ISI Web of Science (WOS), EBSCO (EBSCO Essentials), Embase (EMB), and Scopus were used. The sourced results were recorded in a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart and followed in accordance with the PRISMA extension Scoping Review checklist. We included peer-reviewed articles, Epubs (electronic publications such as databases), and proceedings written in English. VOSviewer for related keywords extracted from review articles presented as a tabular summary to demonstrate their occurrence and connections among these DM education articles from 2000 to 2022.

Results

A total of 1,080 research articles on remote technologies in DM were initially reviewed. After exclusion, 64 articles were included in our review. Emergency remote teaching/learning education, remote learning, online learning/teaching, and blended learning are the most frequently used keywords. As new remote technologies used in emergencies become more advanced, DM pedagogy is facing more complex problems.

Discussions

Artificial intelligence-enhanced remote technologies promote learning incentives for medical undergraduate students or graduate professionals, but the efficacy of learning quality remains uncertain. More blended AI-modulating pedagogies in DM education could be increasingly important in the future. More sophisticated evaluation and assessment are needed to implement carefully considered designs for effective DM education.
