CO2 capture in humid gas using ZnO/activated carbon and ZnO reactivity with CO2

Study on Zinc-Modified Adsorbent for Adsorption of Trace CO2 in Electronic Special Gas BF3

Usually, the ion implantation gases used in semiconductor production are required to be extremely high in purity. Due to the presence of trace CO2 in electronic special gas BF3, the quality of the material is significantly affected, which makes it crucial to impose control on CO2 content. Unlike a series of blank adsorbents reported in other studies, the zinc-loaded adsorbents prepared in this study are intended for the adsorption of CO2 from CO2/BF3. Firstly, the materials were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM-EDS and TG-DSC analysis, etc., and the breakthrough curves of the adsorbents as obtained under different preparation conditions were investigated at 20 °C and 200 kPa. The results show that the adsorption performance reached the optimal level when the activation temperature was 450 °C and a 13X molecular sieve was impregnated by 0.15 mol/L Zn(NO3)2. Moreover, compared with the Zn-13X, the breakthrough time was reduced to 69% and 44% in two adsorption cycles, respectively. Finally, FTIR was used to reveal the adsorption mechanism of the carbonates produced by CO2 adsorption. It was found that the adsorption performance was affected by the irreversible reduction in the number of active sites due to the continuous formation of polydentate carbonate during adsorption and regeneration.

Identification of Nano-Metal Oxides That Can Be Synthesized by Precipitation-Calcination Method Reacting Their Chloride Solutions with NaOH Solution and Their Application for Carbon Dioxide Capture from Air-A Thermodynamic Analysis

Several metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) were already obtained by mixing NaOH solution with chloride solution of the corresponding metal to form metal hydroxide or oxide precipitates and wash-dry-calcine the latter. However, the complete list of metal oxide NPs is missing with which this technology works well. The aim of this study was to fill this knowledge gap and to provide a full list of possible metals for which this technology probably works well. Our methodology was chemical thermodynamics, analyzing solubilities of metal chlorides, metal oxides and metal hydroxides in water and also standard molar Gibbs energy changes accompanying the following: (i) the reaction between metal chlorides and NaOH; (ii) the dissociation reaction of metal hydroxides into metal oxide and water vapor and (iii) the reaction between metal oxides and gaseous carbon dioxide to form metal carbonates. The major result of this paper is that the following metal-oxide NPs can be produced by the above technology from the corresponding metal chlorides: Al₂O₃, BeO, CaO, CdO, CoO, CuO, FeO, Fe₂O₃, In₂O₃, La₂O₃, MgO, MnO, Nd₂O₃, NiO, Pr₂O₃, Sb₂O₃, Sm₂O₃, SnO, Y₂O₃ and ZnO. From the analysis of the literature, the following nine nano-oxides have been already obtained experimentally with this technology: CaO, CdO, Co₃O₄, CuO, Fe₂O₃, NiO, MgO, SnO₂ and ZnO (note: Co₃O₄ and SnO₂ were obtained under oxidizing conditions during calcination in air). Thus, it is predicted here that the following nano-oxides can be potentially synthesized with this technology in the future: Al₂O₃, BeO, In₂O₃, La₂O₃, MnO, Nd₂O₃, Pr₂O₃, Sb₂O₃, Sm₂O₃ and Y₂O₃. The secondary result is that among the above 20 nano-oxides, the following five nano-oxides are able to capture carbon dioxide from air at least down to 42 ppm residual CO₂-content, i.e., decreasing the current level of 420 ppm of CO₂ in the Earth's atmosphere at least tenfold: CaO, MnO, MgO, CdO, CoO. The tertiary result is that by mixing the AuCl₃ solution with NaOH solution, Au nano-particles will precipitate without forming Au-oxide NPs. The results are significant for the synthesis of metal nano-oxide particles and for capturing carbon dioxide from air.

Porous carbon supported calcium oxide for CO2 adsorption and separation of CO2/CH4

Calcium oxide incorporated porous carbon materials were synthesized by the impregnation method to study CO₂ adsorption and separation of CO₂/CH₄. The X-ray diffraction, Raman analysis, N₂ isotherms at 77 K, and SEM with EDX analysis were used to characterize synthesized materials. XRD and N₂ isotherm results have confirmed that synthesized carbon has porosity, and EDX analysis has reported that the presence of CaO on porous carbon. 10CaO/porous carbon has shown 31 cm³ g^-1 of CO₂ adsorption which was higher than bare porous carbon CO₂ adsorption 17.5 cm³ g^-1 at 298 K, 1 bar. It was attributed to electrostatic interaction between CaO and CO₂. However, CH₄ adsorption was decreased by a decrease in surface area. The selectivity of CO₂/CH₄ was higher for 10CaO/porous carbon and the heat of CO₂ adsorption was 36 KJ/mol at high adsorption of CO₂. Moreover, CO₂ adsorption was the same in each adsorption cycle.
