Facile synthesis of Pd-decorated ZnO nanoparticles for acetone sensors with enhanced performance

Progress in ZnO Nanosensors

Developing various nanosensors with superior performance for accurate and sensitive detection of some physical signals is essential for advances in electronic systems. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a unique semiconductor material with wide bandgap (3.37 eV) and high exciton binding energy (60 meV) at room temperature. ZnO nanostructures have been investigated extensively for possible use as high-performance sensors, due to their excellent optical, piezoelectric and electrochemical properties, as well as the large surface area. In this review, we primarily introduce the morphology and major synthetic methods of ZnO nanomaterials, with a brief discussion of the advantages and weaknesses of each method. Then, we mainly focus on the recent progress in ZnO nanosensors according to the functional classification, including pressure sensor, gas sensor, photoelectric sensor, biosensor and temperature sensor. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the research status and constraints for the development of ZnO nanosensor in each category. Finally, the challenges and future research directions of nanosensors based on ZnO are prospected and summarized. It is of profound significance to research ZnO nanosensors in depth, which will promote the development of artificial intelligence, medical and health, as well as industrial, production.

Nanostructured ZnO/Ag Film Prepared by Magnetron Sputtering Method for Fast Response of Ammonia Gas Detection

Possessing a large surface-to-volume ratio is significant to the sensitive gas detection of semiconductor nanostructures. Here, we propose a fast-response ammonia gas sensor based on porous nanostructured zinc oxide (ZnO) film, which is fabricated through physical vapor deposition and subsequent thermal annealing. In general, an extremely thin silver (Ag) layer (1, 3, 5 nm) and a 100 nm ZnO film are sequentially deposited on the SiO₂/Si substrate by a magnetron sputtering method. The porous nanostructure of ZnO film is formed after thermal annealing contributed by the diffusion of Ag among ZnO crystal grains and the expansion of the ZnO film. Different thicknesses of the Ag layer help the formation of different sizes and quantities of hollows uniformly distributed in the ZnO film, which is demonstrated to hold superior gas sensing abilities than the compact ZnO film. The responses of the different porous ZnO films were also investigated in the ammonia concentration range of 10 to 300 ppm. Experimental results demonstrate that the ZnO/Ag(3 nm) sensor possesses a good electrical resistance variation of 85.74% after exposing the sample to 300 ppm ammonia gas for 310 s. Interestingly, a fast response of 61.18% in 60 s for 300 ppm ammonia gas has been achieved from the ZnO/Ag(5 nm) sensor, which costs only 6 s for the response increase to 10%. Therefore, this controllable, porous, nanostructured ZnO film maintaining a sensitive gas response, fabricated by the physical deposition approach, will be of great interest to the gas-sensing community.

Pyrolysis molecule of Torreya grandis bark for potential biomedicine

Torreya grandis is a unique tree species in China. Although full use has been made of the timber, the processing and utilization of the bark has not been effective. In order to explore a new way to utilize the bark of Torreya grandis, a powder of T. grandis bark was prepared and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Differential scanning calorimetry (TG) and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (PY-GC/MS) revealed many bioactive components in the bark of T. grandis, such as acetic acid, 2-methoxy-4-vinyl phenol, D-mannose, and furfural. These substances have potential broad applications in the chemical industry, biomedicine, and food additives. The chemical constituents of the bark of T. grandis suggest a theoretical basis for the future development and utilization of the bark of T. grandis.

Well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles on porous ZnO nanoplates via surface ion exchange for chlorobenzene-selective sensor

The extensive use of chlorobenzene in chemical, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical industries poses a severe health hazard to human beings, because it is highly toxic. The detection of chlorobenzene by metal oxide gas sensors is difficult, owing to its chemically inert molecular structure. In this study, well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles were deposited on porous ZnO nanoplates via surface ion exchange, followed by H₂ reduction. The preparation process effectively prevented the aggregation and uncontrollable growth of Pd particles. A gas-sensing test was conducted, and the modification of size-controlled Pd nanoparticles was found to effectively enhance the sensing properties of porous ZnO nanoplates to chlorobenzene over 300 °C (higher sensitivity at a low operating temperature). At 440 °C, 5% Pd@ZnO sensor showed a drastic increase in response by nearly 4.5-fold, as well as excellent sensing selectivity to chlorobenzene. Its repeatability and stability were acceptable. As known, Pd nanocatalysts contribute to the oxidation of chlorinated aromatic compounds. Pd@ZnO sensors generated more catalytic sites and oxygen species (confirmed by XPS), thus enhancing chlorobenzene oxidation and improving the sensitivity of ZnO-based gas sensors.

NiO/NiCo2O4 Truncated Nanocages with PdO Catalyst Functionalization as Sensing Layers for Acetone Detection

Achieving a novel structural construction and adopting appropriate catalyst materials are key to overcoming inherent limitations of gas sensors in terms of designing sensing layers. This work introduces NiO/NiCo₂O₄ truncated nanocages functionalized with PdO nanoparticles, which were proved to possess the ability of effective acetone detection. The device realized an enhanced acetone-sensing sensitivity, together with excellent selectivity and long-term stability. The sensing performance is far better than sensors based on NiO/NiCo₂O₄ solid nanocubes and NiO/NiCo₂O₄ truncated nanocages without PdO decorating, which is related to cooperative effects of the high specific surface area and efficient catalytic activity. The results provide promising metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived material with the optimization of catalytic performance, demonstrating the remarkable potential for acetone sensors.
