Synthesis of cobalt–nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon from chitosan and its performance for pollutant degradation as Fenton-like catalysts

Activation of H2O2-HCO3- by Ca2Co2O5 for pollutant degradation

The bicarbonate-activated hydrogen peroxide (BAP) system is widely studied for organic pollutant degradation in wastewater treatment. Ca2Co2O5, a heterogeneous catalyst containing multivalent cobalt including Co(II) and Co(III), was herein investigated as a BAP activator, and Acid Orange 7 (AO7) was used as a model pollutant. Ca2Co2O5 exhibited good activation performance. The degradation rate and the initial rate constant of the Ca2Co2O5-activated BAP system were 5.4 and 11.2 times as high as the BAP system, respectively. The removal rate of AO7 reached 90.9% in 30 min under optimal conditions (AO7 20 mg/L, Ca2Co2O5 0.2 g/L, H2O2 1 mM, NaHCO3 5 mM, pH 8.5, 25℃). The Ca2Co2O5 catalyst exhibited good stability and recyclability, retaining 85% of AO7 removal rate in the fifth run. Compared to the BAP system, a lower dosage of H2O2 was required and a higher initial concentration of pollutants allowed for effective degradation in the Ca2Co2O5-BAP system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the catalytic mechanism. The analysis showed that the good catalytic performance of Ca2Co2O5 attributes to its high proportion of oxygen vacancies and Co(III) species, and the presence of Ca. The active species O2•-, •OH, and 1O2 are responsible for the degradation, as indicated by the quenching experiments. The degradation mechanism of AO7 was speculated based on UV-Vis spectral analysis and the identification of degradation intermediates. The azo form, naphthalene and benzoic rings in the AO7 structure are destroyed in the decomposition. This research provides a feasible approach to designing effective and reusable BAP activators for pollutant degradation in wastewater treatment.

Polymer-Supported Heterogeneous Fenton Catalysts for the Environmental Remediation of Wastewater

Materials based on polymer hydrogels have demonstrated potential as innovative Fenton catalysts for treating water. However, developing these polymer-supported catalysts with robust stability presents a significant challenge. This paper explores the development and application of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for the environmental remediation of wastewater, emphasizing the enhancement of metal incorporation into catalysts for improved efficiency. The study begins with an introduction to the heterogeneous Fenton process and its relevance to wastewater treatment. It further delves into the specifics of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, focusing on iron oxide, copper complexes/nanoparticles, and ruthenium as key components. The synthesis methods employed to prepare these catalysts are discussed, highlighting the innovative approaches to achieve substantial metal incorporation. Operational parameters such as catalyst dosage, pollutant concentration, and the effect of pH on the process efficiency are thoroughly examined. The catalytic performance is evaluated, providing insights into the effectiveness of these catalysts in degrading pollutants. Recent developments in the field are reviewed, showcasing advancements in catalyst design and application. The study also addresses the stability and reusability of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, critical factors for their practical application in environmental remediation. Environmental applications are explored, demonstrating the potential of these catalysts in addressing various pollutants. The Conclusions offers future perspectives, underlining the ongoing challenges and opportunities in the field, and the importance of further research to enhance the efficacy and sustainability of polymer-supported heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Synergistic Effect of Sn and Fe in Fe-Nx Site Formation and Activity in Fe-N-C Catalyst for ORR

Iron-nitrogen-carbon (Fe-N-C) materials emerged as one of the best non-platinum group material (non-PGM) alternatives to Pt/C catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of O₂ in fuel cells. Co-doping with a secondary metal center is a possible choice to further enhance the activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, classical Fe-N-C materials were co-doped with Sn as a secondary metal center. Sn-N-C according to the literature shows excellent activity, in particular in the fuel cell setup; here, the same catalyst shows a non-negligible activity in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ electrolyte but not as high as expected, meaning the different and uncertain nature of active sites. On the other hand, in mixed Fe, Sn-N-C catalysts, the presence of Sn improves the catalytic activity that is linked to a higher Fe-N₄ site density, whereas the possible synergistic interaction of Fe-N₄ and Sn-N_x found no confirmation. The presence of Fe-N₄ and Sn-N_x was thoroughly determined by extended X-ray absorption fine structure and NO stripping technique; furthermore, besides the typical voltammetric technique, the catalytic activity of Fe-N-C catalyst was determined and also compared with that of the gas diffusion electrode (GDE), which allows a fast and reliable screening for possible implementation in a full cell. This paper therefore explores the effect of Sn on the formation, activity, and selectivity of Fe-N-C catalysts in both acid and alkaline media by tuning the Sn/Fe ratio in the synthetic procedure, with the ratio 1/2 showing the best activity, even higher than that of the iron-only containing sample (j_k = 2.11 vs 1.83 A g^-1). Pt-free materials are also tested for ORR in GDE setup in both performance and durability tests.

Highly Graphitized Fe-N-C Electrocatalysts Prepared from Chitosan Hydrogel Frameworks

The development of platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts derived from cheap and environmentally friendly biomasses for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a topic of relevant interest, particularly from the point of view of sustainability. Fe-nitrogen-doped carbon materials (Fe-N-C) have attracted particular interest as alternative to Pt-based materials, due to the high activity and selectivity of Fe-Nx active sites, the high availability and good tolerance to poisoning. Recently, many studies focused on developing synthetic strategies, which could transform N-containing biomasses into N-doped carbons. In this paper, chitosan was employed as a suitable N-containing biomass for preparing Fe-N-C catalyst in virtue of its high N content (7.1%) and unique chemical structure. Moreover, the major application of chitosan is based on its ability to strongly coordinate metal ions, a precondition for the formation of Fe-Nx active sites. The synthesis of Fe-N-C consists in a double step thermochemical conversion of a dried chitosan hydrogel. In acidic aqueous solution, the preparation of physical cross-linked hydrogel allows to obtain sophisticated organization, which assure an optimal mesoporosity before and after the pyrolysis. After the second thermal treatment at 900 °C, a highly graphitized material was obtained, which has been fully characterized in terms of textural, morphological and chemical properties. RRDE technique was used for understanding the activity and the selectivity of the material versus the ORR in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. Special attention was put in the determination of the active site density according to nitrite electrochemical reduction measurements. It was clearly established that the catalytic activity expressed as half wave potential linearly scales with the number of Fe-Nx sites. It was also established that the addition of the iron precursor after the first pyrolysis step leads to an increased activity due to both an increased number of active sites and of a hierarchical structure, which improves the access to active sites. At the same time, the increased graphitization degree, and a reduced density of pyrrolic nitrogen groups are helpful to increase the selectivity toward the 4e- ORR pathway.

Ibuprofen degradation using a Co-doped carbon matrix derived from peat as a peroxymonosulphate activator

The wider presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in nature is a major cause for concern in society. Among pharmaceuticals, the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen has commonly been found in aquatic and soil environments. We produced a Co-doped carbon matrix (Co-P 850) through the carbonization of Co²⁺ saturated peat and used it as a peroxymonosulphate activator to aid ibuprofen degradation. The properties of Co-P 850 were analysed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy filtered transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The characterization results showed that Co/Fe oxides were generated and tightly embedded into the carbon matrix after carbonization. The degradation results indicated that high temperature and slightly acidic to neutral conditions (pH = 5 to 7.5) promoted ibuprofen degradation efficiency in the Co-P 850/peroxymonosulphate system. Analysis showed that approx. 52% and 75% of the dissolved organic carbon was removed after 2 h and 5 h of reaction time, respectively. Furthermore, the existence of chloride and bicarbonate had adverse effects on the degradation of ibuprofen. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirmed that SO₄^·-, ·OH and O₂^·- radicals together contributed to the high ibuprofen degradation efficiency. In addition, we identified 13 degradation intermediate compounds and an ibuprofen degradation pathway by mass spectrometry analysis and quantum computing. Based on the results and methods presented in this study, we propose a novel way for the synthesis of a Co-doped catalyst from spent NaOH-treated peat and the efficient catalytic degradation of ibuprofen from contaminated water.

MOFs derived Co/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles embedded in graphitized carbon nanocubes as efficient Fenton catalysts

In this work, Cu-Co bimetallic nanoparticles embedded carbon nanocubes (Cu_xCo_10-x/CNC) are synthesized by direct carbonization of Cu-Co bimetal ZIF. The ratio of Cu and Co nanoparticles in Cu_xCo_10-x/CNC as well as morphology, pore structure and graphitization degree of carbon substrates can be tuned by adjusting the molar ratio of Cu/Co (0:10, 1:9, 2:8, 3:7, 4:6 and 5:5) in ZIF precursors. The Fenton catalytic performances of Cu_xCo_10-x/CNC are further studied by degrading a typical azo dye, Acid Orange II (AOII). The results show the Cu_xCo_10-x/CNC with a Cu/Co ratio of 4/6 display the highest catalytic activity with faster dye degradation rate than other catalysts, which may be ascribed to the synergetic effects of optimized ratio of Cu/Co bimetals, high surface area and graphitized carbon framework. The stability and reusability of the catalyst has been investigated, showing a good performance after five consecutive runs. The catalysts prepared in this study can be used as an attractive alternative in heterogeneous Fenton chemistry and wastewater treatment.
