Fe3O4 supported [Cu(ii)(met)(pro-H)2] complex as a novel nanomagnetic catalytic system for room temperature C-O coupling reactions

In this study, a newly-designed copper(ii) complex of metformin and l-proline which was immobilized on Fe₃O₄ MNPs was developed. The structure of the catalyst platform was fully characterized using spectroscopic analyses. Moreover, the catalytic activity of [Fe₃O₄@Cu(ii)(Met)(Pro-H)₂] was investigated in a one-pot synthesis of a variety of functionalized ethers in reasonable to excellent yields through Ullman reaction in an aqueous environment using various aryl halides, phenol, and Cs₂CO₃ and without using any external Cu-reducing agents. Notably, gentle catalytic conditions, quick reaction times, applicability, low cost, and preventing dangerous chemicals and solvents during synthesis and catalytic application are some of the superior properties of the [Fe₃O₄@Cu(ii)(Met)(Pro-H)₂] complex. Furthermore, the catalyst can be reused for several runs (at least eight times) without remarkable loss in efficiency.

Highly Active Cellulose-Supported Poly(hydroxamic acid)-Cu(II) Complex for Ullmann Etherification

Highly active natural pandanus-extracted cellulose-supported poly(hydroxamic acid)-Cu(II) complex 4 was synthesized. The surface of pandanus cellulose was modified through graft copolymerization using purified methyl acrylate as a monomer. Then, copolymer methyl acrylate was converted into a bidentate chelating ligand poly(hydroxamic acid) via a Loosen rearrangement in the presence of an aqueous solution of hydroxylamine. Finally, copper species were incorporated into poly(hydroxamic acid) via the adsorption process. Cu(II) complex 4 was fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The cellulose-supported Cu(II) complex 4 was successfully applied (0.005 mol %) to the Ullmann etherification of aryl, benzyl halides, and phenacyl bromide with a number of aromatic phenols to provide the corresponding ethers with excellent yield [benzyl halide (70-99%); aryl halide (20-90%)]. Cu(II) complex 4 showed high stability and was easily recovered from the reaction mixture. It could be reused up to seven times without loss of its original catalytic activity. Therefore, Cu(II) complex 4 can be commercially utilized for the preparation of various ethers, and this synthetic technique could be a part in the synthesis of natural products and medicinal compounds.

Mass balance and elimination mechanism of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during the kraft pulping process

Papermaking raw materials are usually digested by NaOH and Na₂S solution. The fate of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during the kraft pulping process is still poorly known. In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted on the variation in PCDD/Fs in the kraft pulping section of 3 modern non-wood pulp mills adopting elemental chlorine-free (ECF) bleaching technology. Similar dioxin homologue profiles, dominated by Cl_1-3DF and Cl₂DD homologues, were observed in the raw materials, black liquors and brown pulps; and the partitioning behaviors of dioxin congeners between black liquor and brown pulp were found to be partly dependent on their octanol-water partitioning coefficients. Dioxin mass flow analysis indicated that the raw materials contributed more than 95 % to the dioxins entering the pulping section. Approximately 7 - 30 % of the input dioxins were exported by black liquor, and the brown pulp carried 44 - 51 % of the input dioxins into the subsequent bleaching section. The kraft pulping process caused a 40 - 48 % reduction in input dioxins. Alkaline hydrolysis and coupling reaction between dioxins and the aromatic fragments of lignin were proposed as two most possible mechanisms for dioxin elimination. In general, modern pulp mills have actually become industrial plants that eliminate environmental dioxins.

Recent Advancement of Ullmann Condensation Coupling Reaction in the Formation of Aryl-Oxygen (C-O) Bonding by Copper-Mediated Catalyst

Transition metal-catalyzed chemical transformation of organic electrophiles and organometallic reagents belong to the most important cross coupling reaction in organic synthesis. The biaryl ether division is not only popular in natural products and synthetic pharmaceuticals but also widely found in many pesticides, polymers, and ligands. Copper catalyst has received great attention owing to the low toxicity and low cost. However, traditional Ullmann-type couplings suffer from limited substrate scopes and harsh reaction conditions. The introduction of homogeneous copper catalyst with presence of bidentate ligands over the past two decades has totally changed this situation as these ligands enable the reaction promoted in mild condition. The reaction scope has also been greatly expanded, rendering this copper-based cross-coupling attractive for both academia and industry. In this review, we will highlight the latest progress in the development of useful homogeneous copper catalyst with presence of ligand and heterogeneous copper catalyst in Ullmann type C-O cross-coupling reaction. Additionally, the application of Ullmann type C-O cross coupling reaction will be discussed.
