Irradiation of Fe–Mn@SiO2 with microwave energy enhanced its Fenton-like catalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue

Fabrication of magnetic MnFe2O4@HL composites with an in situ Fenton-like reaction for enhancing tetracycline degradation

Novel magnetic MnFe2O4@honey locust-derived carbon (MnFe2O4@HL) composites were synthesized via an in-situ hydrothermal precipitation method, and were characterized as an excellent Fenton-like catalyst for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Results showed that the vast majority of TC was mineralized in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)/MnFe2O4@HL system after 120 min of reaction time with 92.3% of removal efficiency and the removal of 71.3% of total organic carbon (TOC). Systematic characterization approaches including scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were introduced to reveal the microstructure and properties of magnetic MnFe2O4@HL composites. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were identified as the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) via the quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, while superoxide radicals (·O2-) played a negligible role. The dual cycles of both Fe3+/Fe2+ and Mn3+/Mn2+ were significant enhanced through the bimetallic redox effect and the electron transfer effect of the carbon-based functional group, accelerating the generation of •OH. The removal of TC was still up to 79.3% after five reuses of magnetic composites, demonstrating the MnFe2O4@HL with excellent stability and reuse performance. The influence of various experimental control conditions involving initial pH, catalyst and H2O2 dosage, temperature, as well as common anions (Cl-, NO3-, and HCO3-) on the degradation of TC were finally evaluated. This study provides an efficient in-situ generation method of emerging magnetic materials, and systematically reveals its mechanism of homogeneous Fenton-like catalysis, which shows promising applications for the degradation of environmental contaminants.

Synthesis of the MnO2-Fe3O4 catalyst support on amorphous silica: a new Fenton's reagent in the degradation of the reactive blue-19 in aqueous solution

In this study, a new Fenton's reagent was synthesized via two steps: (1) the dispersed Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of the SiO₂ carrier via the precipitation process, and (2) the MnO₂ nano-sheets were coated on the surface of Fe₃O₄/SiO₂ via hydrothermal method. The SiO₂ carrier has been synthetically utilized from Vietnamese rice husk. The successful formation of the MnO₂-Fe₃O₄/SiO₂ composite has been analytically characterized by the XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscope), EDS (energy dispersive spectrometry)-mapping, FTIR (Fourier transform infrared), S_BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area), and adsorption/desorption isotherms. This Fenton system was employed to catalyze degradation process of the reactive-blue 19 (RB19) with approximately 100% of removal efficiency after 25 min at the optimal condition of 0.15 g/100 mL of catalyst dosage, pH = 3, and the H₂O₂ concentration of 3 mL/100 mL. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused at least six times with high catalytic activity that was more than 90%. In conclusion, this study showed that the mesoporous MnO₂-Fe₃O₄/SiO₂ composite has a great potential for the removal application of dyes from wastewater, and the application of Vietnam rice husk in environmental treatment was developed.

Spherical ZVI/Mn-C Bimetallic Catalysts for Efficient Fenton-Like Reaction under Mild Conditions

The heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction has been receiving increasing attention for its inexpensiveness and high efficiency in water treatment. In this study, a novel strategy was proposed for preparing spherical ZVI/Mn-C bimetallic catalysts with a high activity for a Fenton-like reaction by using the ammonium alginate assisted sol–gel method coupled with a carbothermic reduction. The results showed that the obtained ZVI/Mn-C spheres had a uniform size, smooth surface and good sphericity, and the particle size of ZVI was limited to about 30 nm by the carbon layer. Among all catalysts, the ZVI/Mn-C-31 catalyst exhibited the highest phenol degradation efficiency in the Fenton-like process, and almost 100% phenol degradation efficiency was achieved under neutral pH at room temperature within 5 min. Moreover, the ZVI/Mn-C-31/H2O2 system showed a 100% degradation efficiency for removing a wide range of aromatic pollutants, including catechol, resorcinol and o-nitrophenol. Moreover, the radicals-scavenging experiment illustrated that the ·OH played a key factor in mineralizing the organic matters, and the ·O2− generated from the MnO-H2O2 system accelerated the conversion rate of ferric iron to ferrous iron. Due to the synergistic effects between ZVI and MnO, the ZVI/Mn-C-31 catalyst performed excellently in the Fenton-like reaction at an extended pH range.
