Synthesis and membranoprotective properties of new disulfides with monoterpene and carbohydrate fragments

Synthesis and Biological Activity of Unsymmetrical Monoterpenylhetaryl Disulfides

New unsymmetrical monoterpenylhetaryl disulfides based on heterocyclic disulfides and monoterpene thiols were synthesized for the first time in 48–88% yields. Hydrolysis of disulfides with fragments of methyl esters of 2-mercaptonicotinic acid was carried out in 73–95% yields. The obtained compounds were evaluated for antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal activity, cytotoxicity and mutagenicity.

Glycosyl o-[1-(p-MeO-Phenyl)vinyl]benzoates (PMPVB) as Easily Accessible, Stable, and Reactive Glycosyl Donors for O-, S-, and C-Glycosylations under Brønsted Acid Catalysis

Methods suitable for the synthesis of both O- and S-glycosylations are relatively rare because commonly used promoters like halonium sources or gold catalysts are incompatible with thiols as nucleophiles. Here, we present (p-MeO)phenylvinylbenzoates (PMPVB) as easily accessible, stable, and reactive alkene-based glycosyl donors that can be activated with catalytic amounts of a Brønsted acid. This activation protocol not only allows us to synthesize O-glycosides but also can successfully provide S- and C-linked glycosides. The armed and disarmed donors lead to product formation in 5 min, showcasing the high reactivity of the donors. Competitive experiments show that the PMPVB donors are much more reactive than the corresponding PVB donors even under NIS/TMSOTf conditions, whereas PVB donors are not reactive enough to be efficiently activated under Brønsted acid conditions. The potential of the catalytic glycosylation protocol has also been showcased by synthesizing trisaccharides. The Brønsted acid activation of PMPVB donors also allows access to C-glycosides in a stereoselective fashion. The easy accessibility of the donor aglycon on a multigram scale in just two steps makes the PMPVB donors highly attractive alternatives.

Caryophyllane Thiols, Vinyl Thioethers, Di- and Bis-Sulfides: Antioxidant and Membrane Protective Activities

Caryophyllane thioterpenoids were synthesized in 23 - 81% yields. The antioxidant properties of the obtained compounds in various model systems were found. It was revealed that 4,5-epoxycaryophyll-9-ylmethanethiol has the greatest antioxidant activity. The isomerism of sesquiterpenic fragments was shown to have a significant effect on the biological activity of the compounds.

Studies on oxidative transformations of thiols, sulfides and alcohols in the presence of chlorine dioxide

Our recent studies on the chemical reactivity of chlorine dioxide in the reactions with sulfur and oxygen containing compounds are reviewed. A special attention is given to chlorine dioxide interaction with alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, monoterpenyl thiols, sulfides and disulfides. The data on the oxidation of monoterpene alcohols and phenols are also presented. The directions of reactions depending on the structure of the compounds were identified.
