Abstract
In this work a new donor of nitric oxide (NO) with antibacterial properties, namely nitrosyl iron complex of [Fe(C6H5C-SNH2)2(NO)2][Fe(C6H5C-SNH2)(S2O3)(NO)2] composition (complex I), has been synthesized and studied. Complex I was produced by the reduction of the aqueous solution of [Fe2(S2O3)2(NO)2]2− dianion by the thiosulfate, with the further treatment of the mixture by the acidified alcohol solution of thiobenzamide. Based on the structural study of I (X-ray analysis, quantum chemical calculations by NBO and QTAIM methods in the frame of DFT), the data were obtained on the presence of the NO…NO interactions, which stabilize the DNIC dimer in the solid phase. The conformation properties, electronic structure and free energies of complex I hydration were studied using B3LYP functional and the set of 6–31 + G(d,p) basis functions. The effect of an aquatic surrounding was taken into account in the frame of a polarized continuous model (PCM). The NO-donating activity of complex I was studied by the amperometry method using an “amiNO-700” sensor electrode of the “inNO Nitric Oxide Measuring System”. The antibacterial activity of I was studied on gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus) bacteria. Cytotoxicity was studied using Vero cells. Complex I was found to exhibit antibacterial activity comparable to that of antibiotics, and moderate toxicity to Vero cells.

Abstract
By means of quantum-chemical calculations using Density Functional Theory, Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules, and Natural Bond Orbitals, theoretical modeling of intermolecular interactions has been performed for eight nitrosyl iron complexes with aliphatic thiourea ligands, which was aimed at discovering the presence of the NO…NO intermolecular interactions and at studying the possibility of the NO…NO supramolecular synthon formation in their crystalline structure for explaining their unusual magnetic properties. Such interactions were shown to be either stacking or T-like interactions, depending on the relative position of nitrosyl ligands and energetically corresponding to Van der Waals bonds. Mainly LP(O), π (NO), and π*(NO) orbitals in various combinations participate in their formation, with π (FeN), π(FeО), and LP(N) orbitals hardly being participants. The involvement of the NO bond orbitals results in quenching the orbital moment of the NO groups. If NO groups are isolated from intermolecular interactions, they can preserve the unquenched orbital moment.

Abstract
A comparative electron density study (from X-ray diffraction and periodic quantum chemistry) of sodium and potassium nitrates is performed to test the performance of a transferrable aspherical atom model, which is based on the invarioms, to describe chemical bonding features of ions occurring in sites of different symmetry typical of inorganic salts and in different crystal environments. Relying on tabulated entries for the isolated ions (although tailor-made to account for different site symmetries), it takes the same time to employ as the spherical atom model routinely used in X-ray diffraction studies but provides an electron density distribution that faithfully reveals all the interionic interactions-even the weakest ones (such as between the nitrate anions or a K···N interaction found in the metastable form of KNO3) yet important for properties of inorganic materials-as if obtained from high-resolution X-ray diffraction data.
