Molecular modelling of fullerene C60 functionalized by nitric oxide for use in biological environment

The unique potential of fullerene C60 for various biological applications has ignited significant interest. However, its inherent non-polarity poses a critical challenge for its effective integration within biological systems. This study delves into the intricate physicochemical characteristics of the innovative [C60 + NO] complex using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. The computational analyses encompass molecular charge, surface electrostatic potential, and dipole moment evaluations. Impressively, the dipole moment of the [C60 + NO] complex significantly increases to 12.92 D. Meticulous surface analysis reveals a subtle interplay between molecular structures, indicating weak interactions. The analysis of the absorption spectrum unveils a noteworthy red-shift of 200 nm subsequent to complex formation. To elucidate the electron transfer mechanisms, we explore photo-induced electron transfer through CAM-B3LYP. This exploration elucidates intricate pathways governing electron transfer, with complementary insights gleaned from Marcus theory's outputs, especially the Gibbs free energy of electron transfer. Changes in the physicochemical properties of approaching C60 and NO molecules reveal interesting results compared to separate molecules. These findings resonate profoundly in the context of potential biological and pharmaceutical utilization. With implications for the biomedical area, the outcomes linked to the [C60 + NO] complex kindle optimism for pioneering biomedical applications.

Structural and electronic properties of H2, CO, CH4, NO, and NH3 adsorbed onto Al12Si12 nanocages using density functional theory

In this study, the adsorption of gases (CH₄, CO, H₂, NH₃, and NO) onto Al₁₂Si₁₂ nanocages was theoretically investigated using density functional theory. For each type of gas molecule, two different adsorption sites above the Al and Si atoms on the cluster surface were explored. We performed geometry optimization on both the pure nanocage and nanocages after gas adsorption and calculated their adsorption energies and electronic properties. The geometric structure of the complexes changed slightly following gas adsorption. We show that these adsorption processes were physical ones and observed that NO adsorbed onto Al₁₂Si₁₂ had the strongest adsorption stability. The E _g (energy band gap) value of the Al₁₂Si₁₂ nanocage was 1.38 eV, indicating that it possesses semiconductor properties. The E _g values of the complexes formed after gas adsorption were all lower than that of the pure nanocage, with the NH₃-Si complex showing the greatest decrease in E _g. Additionally, the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital were analyzed according to Mulliken charge transfer theory. Interaction with various gases was found to remarkably decrease the E _g of the pure nanocage. The electronic properties of the nanocage were strongly affected by interaction with various gases. The E _g value of the complexes decreased due to the electron transfer between the gas molecule and the nanocage. The density of states of the gas adsorption complexes were also analyzed, and the results showed that the E _g of the complexes decreased due to changes in the 3p orbital of the Si atom. This study theoretically devised novel multifunctional nanostructures through the adsorption of various gases onto pure nanocages, and the findings indicate the promise of these structures for use in electronic devices.

Highly sensitive work function type room temperature gas sensor based on Ti doped hBN monolayer for sensing CO2, CO, H2S, HF and NO. A DFT study

The adsorptions of toxic gas molecules (CO2, CO, H2S, HF and NO) on pristine and Ti atom doped hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) monolayer are investigated by density functional theory. Weak physisorption of gas molecules on pristine hBN results in micro seconds recovery time, limiting the gas sensing ability of pristine hBN. However Ti atom doping significantly enhances the adsorption ability. Ti atom best fits to be doped at B vacancy in hBN with lowest formation energy (-3.241 eV). Structural analysis reveals that structures of gas molecules change after being chemisorbed to Ti doped hBN monolayer. Partial density of states analysis illustrates strong hybridization among Ti-3d, gas-2p and BN-2p orbitals, moreover Bader charge transfer indicates that gas molecules act as charge acceptors. Ti doped hBN monolayer undergoes transition from semiconductor to narrow band semiconductor with adsorption of CO2, H2S and NO, while with CO and HF adsorption it transforms into metal. The change of conductance of Ti doped hBN monolayer in response to adsorption of gas molecules reveals its high sensitivity, however it is not selective to HF and NO gases. The recovery times of gas molecules desorption from monolayer are too long at ambient condition however it can significantly be shortened by annealing at elevated temperature with UV exposure. Since recovery time for NO removal from monolayer is still very long at 500 K with UV exposure, Ti doped hBN monolayer is more suitable as a scavenger of NO gas rather than as a gas sensor. It is thus predicted that Ti doped hBN monolayer can be a work-function type CO2, CO, H2S and HF sensor and NO gas scavenger.

Theory for designing mechanically stable single- and double-walled SiGe nanopeapods

Herein, we utilized molecular dynamic (MD) simulations using LAMMPS software and selecting Tersoff and Lennard-Jones potentials to design and investigate mechanical properties of (8,8), (9,9), (10,10), and (11,11) single-walled and (8,8)@(11,11) double-walled silicon-germanium (SiGe) armchair nanopeapods. The number of encapsulated fullerenes and the working temperature were changed as variables to evaluate the mechanical properties. The larger nanopeapods had lower Young's modulus and failure strain, but, surprisingly enough, no significant variation was found in failure strain values by increasing the number of Si₃₀Ge₃₀ cages and the temperature (300-900 K). Overall, higher mechanical properties were the case for double-walled SiGe nanopeapods and that the more the number of encapsulated cages, the lower the mechanical properties whatever the nanopeapod. Amazingly, fullerenes remained undamaged even after the SiGe nanopeapods ruptured. Thus, thermally/mechanically stable nanopeapods developed theoretically herein can be considered potential super-carriers for drug and gene encapsulation.
