Abstract
We investigated circulating levels of inflammatory biomarkers pentraxin-3 (PTX3), cyclophilin A (CypA), and heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF); oxidative stress; and antioxidant status markers in the patients with ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) to better understand a relationship between inflammation and oxidative stress. We examined the impact of oxidative stress on high values of inflammatory parameters. The study included 87 patients with STEMI and 193 controls. We observed a positive correlation between PTX3 and HB-EGF (ρ = 0.24, P = .027), CyPA, and sulfhydryl (SH) groups (ρ = 0.25, P = .026), and a negative correlation between PTX3 and SH groups (ρ = -0.35, P = .001) in patients with STEMI. To better understand the effect of the examined parameters on the occurrence of high concentrations of inflammatory parameters, we grouped them using principal component analysis. This analysis identified the 4 most contributing factors. Optimal cutoff values for discrimination of patients with STEMI from controls were calculated for PTX3 and HB-EGF. An independent predictor for PTX3 above the cutoff value was a "metabolic-oxidative stress factor" comprised of glucose and oxidative stress marker prooxidant-antioxidant balance (odds ratio = 4.449, P = .030). The results show that higher PTX3 values will occur in patients having STEMI with greater metabolic and oxidative stress status values.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) oxidizes targets through the production of secondary reactive oxygen species (SOS). Cancers induce oxidative stress changing with progression, the resulting antioxidant status differing from one patient to the other. The aim of this study was to determine the oxidative status of patients with resectable Non-Small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) and the potential influence of antioxidants, compared to sera from healthy donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum samples from 10 women and 28 men, 19 adenocarcinomas (ADK), 15 patients N1 or M1 were submitted to a photoreaction producing ¹O₂. Then, samples were supplemented with vitamins (Vit C, Vit E), or glutathione (GSH). RESULTS Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and metastatic SCCs induced a lower SOS rate. While Vit C increased SOS in controls as in patients with metastases, Vit E or the combination of Vit E and C strongly reduced SOS. GSH alone lightly decreased SOS in controls but had no effect in patients either alone or combined with Vit C. CONCLUSION In "early" lung cancers, SOS are comparable or lower than for healthy persons. The role of Vitamins varies with gender, cancer type, and metastases. This suggests that an eventual supplementation should be performed on a per-patient basis to evidence any effect.

Abstract
In the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, oxidative stress plays a major role in plaque instability, rupture, and erosion, which subsequently leads to thrombus formation and causes total infarct-related artery (IRA) occlusion. We investigated the relationship between spontaneous reperfusion (SR) of IRA and oxidative stress in patients with anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. A total of 341 consecutive patients with anterior STEMI were prospectively included in the present study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to their thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) flow grade: SR group (66 patients, TIMI flow 3) and non-SR group (275 patients, TIMI flow 0-2). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, oxidative stress index (β = 0.868, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.806-0.934, P < .001), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, uric acid, mean platelet volume, Killip 2 to 4 class, and initial SYNTAX score were independently associated with SR. Oxidative stress as well as inflammation may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of SR in patients with STEMI.
