First Principles Study of Molecular O2 Adsorption on the PdO(101) Surface

Experimental and Density Functional Theory Simulation Research on PdO-SnO2 Nanosheet Ethanol Gas Sensors

Pure SnO2 and 1 at.% PdO-SnO2 materials were prepared using a simple hydrothermal method. The micromorphology and element valence state of the material were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS methods. The SEM results showed that the prepared material had a two-dimensional nanosheet morphology, and the formation of PdO and SnO2 heterostructures was validated through TEM. Due to the influence of the heterojunction, in the XPS test, the energy spectrum peaks of Sn and O in PdO-SnO2 were shifted by 0.2 eV compared with SnO2. The PdO-SnO2 sensor showed improved ethanol sensing performance compared to the pure SnO2 sensor, since it benefited from the large specific surface area of the nanosheet structure, the modulation effect of the PdO-SnO2 heterojunction on resistance, and the catalyst effect of PdO on the adsorption of oxygen. A DFT calculation study of the ethanol adsorption characteristics of the PdO-SnO2 surface was conducted to provide a detailed explanation of the gas-sensing mechanism. PdO was found to improve the reducibility of ethanol, enhance the adsorption of ethanol's methyl group, and increase the number of adsorption sites. A synergistic effect based on the continuous adsorption sites was also deduced.

Synergistic effects of copper and oxygen vacancies in enhancing the efficacy of partially crystalline CuMnxOy catalyst for ozone decomposition

To tackle the challenge of ground-level ozone pollution, this study proposed a potential catalytic design approach for ozone decomposition using Cu-Mn bimetallic oxide. This approach is grounded in an understanding of the intrinsic reactivity for catalyst and incorporates a novel potassium-driven low-temperature oxidation process for catalyst synthesis. The research highlights the creation of a highly reactive Cu-Mn oxide phase with extensive defect coverage, leading to significantly increased reaction rates. It also identifies the MnO2(100) facet as a crucial active phase, where oxygen vacancies simultaneously enhance O3 adsorption and decomposition, albeit with a concurrent risk of O2 poisoning due to the stabilization of adsorbed O2. Crucially, the incorporation of Cu offsets the effects of oxygen vacancies, influencing conversion rates and lessening O2 poisoning. The synergistic interplay between Cu and oxygen vacancies elevates the performance of the defect-rich Cu-Mn oxide catalyst. By combining computational and experimental methods, this study not only advances the understanding of the Cu-Mn oxide system for ozone decomposition but also contributes valuable insights into developing more efficient catalysts to mitigate ozone pollution.

First-principles insights into the adsorption and interaction mechanism of selenium on selective catalytic reduction catalyst

Selenium (Se) species can deposit in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system during the denitrification process, which is harmful to the catalyst. To improve the Se-poisoning resistance of SCR catalysts, the influence mechanism of Se species on vanadium-titanium-based catalysts should be elucidated from an atomic scale. In this paper, theoretical calculations were conducted to reveal the adsorption and interaction mechanism of Se species on V₂O₅-WO₃(MoO₃)/TiO₂ surface based on the first-principles. The impact of Se species on the electronic structure of the catalyst was investigated from electron transfer, bond formation, and VO site activity. The results show that the adsorption of elementary Se (Se⁰) belongs to chemisorption, while SeO₂ can undergo both physisorption and chemisorption. For the chemisorption of Se species, obvious charge transfer with the catalyst is observed and Se-O bond is formed, which enhances the oxidation activity of the catalyst, triggers the reaction of Se⁰ and SeO₂ with the catalyst components to generate SeVO_x and SeW(Mo)O_x. The active sites are thereby damaged and the SCR performance is reduced. The above conclusions are mutually confirmed with the previous experimental research. By studying the correlation with the adsorption energies of Se species, descriptors manifesting the Se species adsorption were initially investigated to unveil the relationship between the electronic structure and the adsorption energy. Finally, the influence of temperature on Se adsorption was investigated. The adsorption can only proceed spontaneously below 500 K and is inhibited at high temperatures.
