Methane Oxidation by H2O2 over Different Cu-Species of Cu-ZSM-5 Catalysts

Selective C-H Bond Activation in Propane with Molecular Oxygen over Cu(I)-ZSM-5 at Ambient Conditions

Selective activation of C-H bonds in light alkanes under mild conditions is challenging but holds the promise of efficient upgrading of abundant hydrocarbons. In this work, we report the conversion of propane to propylene with ∼95% selectivity on Cu(I)-ZSM-5 with O2 at room temperature and pressure. The intraporous Cu(I) species was oxidized to Cu(II) during the reaction but could be regenerated with H2 at 220 °C. Diffuse reflectance ultraviolet spectroscopy indicated the presence of both Cu+-O2 and Cu2(μ-O2)2+ species in the zeolite pores during the reaction, and electron paramagnetic resonance results showed that propane activation occurred via a radical-mediated pathway distinct from that with H2O2 as the oxidant. Correlation between spectroscopic and reactivity results on Cu(I)-ZSM-5 with different Cu loadings suggests that the isolated intraporous Cu(I) species is the main active species in propane activation.

Selective Oxidation of Methane to Methanol via In Situ H2O2 Synthesis

The selective oxidation of methane to methanol, using H2O2 generated in situ from the elements, has been investigated using a series of ZSM-5-supported AuPd catalysts of varying elemental composition, prepared via a deposition precipitation protocol. The alloying of Pd with Au was found to offer significantly improved efficacy, compared to that observed over monometallic analogues. Complementary studies into catalytic performance toward the direct synthesis and subsequent degradation of H2O2, under idealized conditions, indicate that methane oxidation efficacy is not directly related to H2O2 production rates, and it is considered that the known ability of Au to promote the release of reactive oxygen species is the underlying cause for the improved performance of the bimetallic catalysts.

Leaching Stability and Redox Activity of Copper-MFI Zeolites Prepared by Solid-State Transformations: Comparison with Ion-Exchanged and Impregnated Samples

The catalyst preparation route is well known to affect the copper loading and its electronic state, which influence the properties of the resulting catalyst. Electronic states of copper ions in copper-containing silicalites with the MFI-framework topology obtained by a solid-state transformation S (SST) were studied with using EPR, UV-Vis DR, XRD, H₂-TPR and chemical differentiating dissolution. They were compared with Cu-ZSM-5 and Cu-MFI (silicalite) prepared via the ion-exchange and incipient wetness impregnation. SST route was shown to provide the formation of MFI structure and favor clustering of Cu-ions near surface and subsurface of zeolite crystals. The square-planar oxide clusters of Cu²⁺-ions and the finely dispersed CuO nanoparticles with the size down to 20 nm were revealed in Cu-MFI-SST samples with low (0.5-1.0 wt.%) and high (16 wt.%) Cu-content. The CuO nanoparticles were characterized by energy band gap 1-1.16 eV. The CuO-like clusters were characterized by ligand-to-metal charge transfer band (CTB L → M) at 32,000 cm^-1 and contain EPR-visible surface Cu²⁺-ions. The low Cu-loaded SST-samples had poor redox properties and activity towards different solvents due to decoration of copper-species by silica; whereas CuO nanoparticles were easily removed from the catalyst by HCl. In the ion-exchanged samples over MFI-silicalite and ZSM-5, Cu²⁺-ions were mainly CuO-like clusters and isolated Cu²⁺ ions inside MFI channels. Their redox properties and tendency to dissolve in acidic solutions differed from the behavior of SST-series samples.

Effects of Cu Species on Liquid-Phase Partial Oxidation of Methane with H2O2 over Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 Catalysts

In this study, a Cu-promoted Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst was examined to reveal the effects of Cu species in selective oxidation of methane into methane oxygenates using H2O2 in water. Cu/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5, and Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared using wet impregnation, solid-state ion exchange, and ion-exchange methods. Various techniques, including nitrogen physisorption, temperature-programmed reduction with H2, UV-vis spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy after NO adsorption, were utilized to characterize the catalysts. The promotional effect of Cu on the Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst in terms of methanol selectivity was confirmed. The preparation method has a considerable influence on the catalyst performance, and the ion-exchange method is the most effective. However, leaching of the Cu species was observed during this reaction, which can affect the quantification of formic acid by 1H-NMR. The homogeneous Cu species increase hydrogen peroxide decomposition and CO2 selectivity, which is undesirable for this reaction.

Oxo dicopper anchored on carbon nitride for selective oxidation of methane

Selective conversion of methane (CH₄) into value-added chemicals represents a grand challenge for the efficient utilization of rising hydrocarbon sources. We report here dimeric copper centers supported on graphitic carbon nitride (denoted as Cu₂@C₃N₄) as advanced catalysts for CH₄ partial oxidation. The copper-dimer catalysts demonstrate high selectivity for partial oxidation of methane under both thermo- and photocatalytic reaction conditions, with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and oxygen (O₂) being used as the oxidizer, respectively. In particular, the photocatalytic oxidation of CH₄ with O₂ achieves >10% conversion, and >98% selectivity toward methyl oxygenates and a mass-specific activity of 1399.3 mmol g Cu⁻¹h⁻¹. Mechanistic studies reveal that the high reactivity of Cu₂@C₃N₄ can be ascribed to symphonic mechanisms among the bridging oxygen, the two copper sites and the semiconducting C₃N₄ substrate, which do not only facilitate the heterolytic scission of C-H bond, but also promotes H₂O₂ and O₂ activation in thermo- and photocatalysis, respectively.

Catalytic cycle of the partial oxidation of methane to methanol over Cu-ZSM-5 revealed using DFT calculations

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the catalytic cycle of methane conversion to methanol over both [Cu2(O2)]2+ and [Cu2(μ-O)]2+ active sites in the Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst. The [Cu2(O2)]2+ site is found to be active for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol, and although it has a higher energy barrier in the methane activation step, it involves a very low energy barrier in the methanol formation step (36.3 kJ mol-1) as well as a lower methanol desorption energy (52.5 kJ mol-1). As the [Cu2(O2)]2+ active site is also thermodynamically stable, it may play an important role during methane conversion to methanol. Furthermore, the methane activation step follows the homolytic route and the heterolytic route for the [Cu2(O2)]2+ and [Cu2(μ-O)]2+ active sites, respectively, whereas the methanol formation step follows the direct radical rebound mechanism and the indirect rebound mechanism, respectively. Our calculations further indicate that the electronic properties of the reactive O atoms in the active site influence their reactivity toward methane oxidation. More specifically, the higher the spin density and the more negative the charge of the reactive O atom at the active site are, the lower the energy barrier for methane activation will be; and the more negative the charge of the hydroxyl group in the reaction intermediate during the partial oxidation of methane to methanol is, the higher energy barrier of the methanol formation step will be in the triplet state. Furthermore, we used a larger cluster model to predict the mechanism of the methane activation step and the effect of atomic charge of the O atom at the [Cu2(μ-O)]2+ and [Cu2(O2)]2+ active sites on the energy barriers of partial oxidation of methane to methanol, and the conclusions drawn employing the larger cluster model are consistent with those drawn using the smaller double-5T-ring cluster model. In addition, different from the traditional mechanism for methane activation at [Cu2(O2)]2+, which consists of two transition states, we find that the partial oxidation of methane at [Cu2(O2)]2+ can also occur via a single step by direct insertion of one of the O atoms at the active site into the C-H bond of methane.
