Abstract
With scientific progress and the development of new genomic techniques (NGTs), the spectrum of organisms modified for various purposes is rapidly expanding and includes a wide range of taxonomic groups. An improved understanding of which newly developed products may be introduced into the market and released into the environment in the near and more distant future is of particular interest for policymakers, regulatory authorities, and risk assessors. To address this information need, we conducted a horizon scanning (HS) of potential environmental applications in four groups of organisms: terrestrial animals (excluding insects and applications with gene drives), fish, algae and microorganisms. We applied a formal scoping review methodology comprising a structured search of the scientific literature followed by eligibility screening, complemented by a survey of grey literature, and regulatory websites and databases. In all four groups of organisms we identified a broad range of potential applications in stages of basic as well as advanced research, and a limited number of applications which are on, or ready to be placed on, the market. Research on GM animals including fish is focused on farmed animals and primarily targets traits which increase performance, influence reproduction, or convey resistance against diseases. GM algae identified in the HS were all unicellular, with more than half of the articles concerning biofuel production. GM algae applications for use in the environment include biocontrol and bioremediation, which are also the main applications identified for GM microorganisms. From a risk assessor's perspective these potential applications entail a multitude of possible pathways to harm. The current limited level of experience and limited amount of available scientific information could constitute a significant challenge in the near future, for which risk assessors and competent authorities urgently need to prepare.

Abstract
n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), including α-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are essential nutrients for vertebrates including humans. Vertebrates are n-3 PUFA-auxotrophic; hence, dietary intake of n-3 PUFAs is required for their normal physiology and development. Although fish meal and oil have been utilized as primary sources of n-3 PUFAs by humans and aquaculture, these traditional n-3 PUFA sources are expected to be exhausted because of the increasing consumption requirements of humans. Hence, it is necessary to establish alternative n-3 PUFA sources to reduce the gap between the supply and demand of n-3 PUFAs. Here, we investigated whether insects, which are considered as a novel source of essential nutrients, could store n-3 PUFAs by the forced expression of n-3 PUFA biosynthetic enzymes. We utilized Drosophila as an insect model to generate transgenic strains expressing Caenorhabditis elegans PUFA biosynthetic enzymes and examined their effects on the proportion of fatty acids. The ubiquitous expression of methyl-end desaturase FAT-1 prominently enhanced the proportions of α-linolenic acid, indicating that FAT-1 is useful for metabolic engineering to fortify α-linolenic acid in insect. Furthermore, the ubiquitous expression of nematode front-end desaturases (FAT-3 and FAT-4), PUFA elongase (ELO-1), and FAT-1 led to EPA bioproduction. Hence, nematode PUFA biosynthetic genes may serve as powerful genetic tools for enhancing the proportion of EPA in insects. This study represents the first step toward the establishment of n-3 PUFA-producing insects.

Abstract
Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids play an important role in brain growth and development, as well as in the health of the body. These fatty acids are traditionally found in seafood, such as fish, fish oils, and algae. They can also be added to food or consumed through dietary supplements. Due to a lack of supply to meet current demand and the potential for adverse effects from excessive consumption of fish and seafood, new alternatives are being sought to achieve the recommended levels in a safe and sustainable manner. New sources have been studied and new production mechanisms have been developed. These new proposals, as well as the importance of these fatty acids, are discussed in this paper.

Abstract
Feed efficiency (FE) is a very important trait affecting the economic benefits of pig breeding enterprises. Adipose tissue can modulate a variety of processes such as feed intake, energy metabolism and systemic physiological processes. However, the mechanism by which microRNAs (miRNAs) in adipose tissues regulate FE remains largely unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to screen potential miRNAs related to FE through miRNA sequencing. The miRNA profiles in porcine adipose tissues were obtained and 14 miRNAs were identified differentially expressed in adipose tissues of pigs with extreme differences in FE, of which 9 were down-regulated and 5 were up-regulated. GO and KEGG analyses indicated that these miRNAs were significantly related to lipid metabolism and these miRNAs modulated FE by regulating lipid metabolism. Subsequently, quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) of five randomly selected DEMs was used to verify the reliability of miRNA-seq data. Furthermore, 39 differentially expressed target genes of these DEMs were obtained, and DEMs-target mRNA interaction networks were constructed. In addition, the most significantly down-regulated miRNAs, ssc-miR-122-5p and ssc-miR-192, might be the key miRNAs for FE. Our results reveal the mechanism by which adipose miRNAs regulate feed efficiency in pigs. This study provides a theoretical basis for the further study of swine feed efficiency improvement.

Abstract
Dareshouri, Arabian, and Akhal-Teke are three Middle Eastern horse breeds that have been selected for endurance and adaptation to harsh climates. Deciphering the genetic characteristics of these horses by tracing selection footprints and copy number of variations will be helpful in improving our understanding of equine breeds' development and adaptation. For this purpose, we sequenced the whole-genome of four Dareshouri horses using Illumina Hiseq panels and compared them with publicly available whole-genome sequences of Arabian (n=3) and Akhal-Teke (n=3) horses . Three tests of FLK, hapFLK, and pooled heterozygosity were applied using a sliding window (window size=100kb, step size=50kb) approach to detect putative selection signals. Copy number variation analysis was applied to investigate copy number of variants (CNVs), and the results were used to suggest selection signatures involving CNVs. Whole-genome sequencing demonstrated 8,837,950 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in autosomal chromosomes. We suggested 58 genes and three quantitative trait loci (QTLs), including some related to horse gait, insect bite hypersensitivity, and withers height, based on selective signals detected by adjusted p-value of Mahalanobis distance based on the rank-based P-values (Md-rank-P) method. We proposed 12 genomic regions under selection pressure involving CNVs which were previously reported to be associated with metabolism energy (SLC5A8), champagne dilution in horses (SLC36A1), and synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids (FAT2). Only 10 Middle Eastern horses were tested in this study; therefore, the conclusions are speculative. Our findings are useful to better understanding the evolution and adaptation of Middle Eastern horse breeds.

Abstract
Consumption of red meat contributes to the intake of many essential nutrients in the human diet including protein, essential fatty acids, and several vitamins and trace minerals, with high iron content, particularly in meats with high myoglobin content. Demand for red meat continues to increase worldwide, particularly in developing countries where food nutrient density is a concern. Dietary and genetic manipulation of livestock can influence the nutritional value of meat products, providing opportunities to enhance the nutritional value of meat. Studies have demonstrated that changes in livestock nutrition and breeding strategies can alter the nutritional value of red meat. Traditional breeding strategies, such as genetic selection, have influenced multiple carcass and meat quality attributes relevant to the nutritional value of meat including muscle and fat deposition. However, limited studies have combined both genetic and nutritional approaches. Future studies aiming to manipulate the composition of fresh meat should aim to balance potential impacts on product quality and consumer perception. Furthermore, the rapidly emerging fields of phenomics, nutrigenomics, and integrative approaches, such as livestock precision farming and systems biology, may help better understand the opportunities to improve the nutritional value of meat under both experimental and commercial conditions.
