Effects of level of concentrate supplementation on growth performance of Arsi-Bale and Boer × Arsi-Bale male goats consuming low-quality grass hay

Evaluation of growth and efficiency-related traits of different levels of Boer x Central Highland crossbred goats

The growth and efficiency-related traits of the Boer x Central Highland goats raised semi-intensively were evaluated. Besides, genetic and non-genetic factors affecting growth and efficiency-related traits were identified. Data were collected over a period of nine years in a flock of Boer crossbred goats and analyzed using general linear model procedure of SAS. The overall least-squares mean live weight at birth, 3-, 6-, 9- and 12 months of age were 2.52 ± 0.01, 9.81 ± 0.13, 13.8 ± 0.15, 17.8 ± 0.19, and 20.5 ± 0.29 kg, respectively. The average weight gains from birth to 3 months, 3 to 6, 6 to 9 and 9–12 months of age were 80.3, 37.5, 41.9, and 31.2 g day⁻¹, respectively. Boer blood level, birth type, season and year of kidding had a significant effect on growth traits. The overall least-squares mean of Kleiber ratio from birth to 3 months, 3–6 months, 6–9 months, and 9 month to yearling age were 13.99 ± 0.11, 5.23 ± 0.14, 4.66 ± 0.16, and 2.95 ± 0.18, respectively. Parity, birth type, Boer blood level, season and year of birth had a significant influence on the expression of efficiency-related traits (Kleiber ratios) in different growth phases. In terms of growth performance and efficiency-related traits, F2 and F3 crossbred goats did not show any benefit over F1 crossbred goats. Increasing Boer blood level above 50% would be worthless under the existing minimal input production system. Therefore, besides to improving the management of goats, producing the first filial generation would be suitable for medium to high input production systems.

Biochemical indices and heamtological parameters of goats fed lablab purpureus and vigna unguiculata as supplements to a chloris gayana basal diet

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of forage legume diets on haematological and biochemical indices of Xhosa goats. Eighteen animals, one-year-old, of average live weight 14.13 ± 0.24 kg were assigned, in a completely randomized design, to three treatment diets. Animals were housed individually and sex was equally represented among treatments with 6 animals per treatment. Weights and blood samples were taken every fortnight. A pair of blood samples (5 ml each) were collected from each goat, via jugular vein puncture and were subjected to either haematological or biochemical analysis. The results show that treatment diets and sex significantly (P < 0.05) affected DMI, total gain, ADG, and feed conversion ratio. Treatment diets and sex had no effects (P > 0.05) on serum total proteins, globulins, urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma- glutamyl transferase concentrations. The diet influenced albumin was (P < 0.05) while sex influenced ALP concentration (P < 0.05). Measured over time, the plasma concentration of urea and ALP significantly increased (P < 0.05) while creatinine and cholesterol concentration decreased (P < 0.05). Although the overall blood biochemical properties remain unchanged among the treatments and between sexes; treatment by sex, treatment by day and sex by day interactions were significant (P < 0.05). The white blood cells, red blood cell, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, haemoglobin, haematocrit, and platelet and mean platelet volume levels were similar among treatments and between sexes (P > 0.05). The mean cell volume and red cell distribution width were different among treatments (P < 0.05). Treatment diets significantly (P < 0.05) influenced neutrophil (%) content while sex influenced basophile (%) content. In conclusion forage legumes did not cause toxicity in goats or any pathological condition.

Effects of diet on leather quality and longissimus muscle composition of three Ethiopian indigenous goat types

A 3 × 2 factorial experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of breed or genotype and levels of concentrate on muscle composition and skin and leather quality characteristics. The three indigenous goat genotypes used were Bati, Hararghe highland (HH), and short-eared Somali (SS), (12/genotype) with an average initial weight of 15.2 ± 0.245 kg. The goats were all males ~1 year of age. After grouping based on their initial weight, they were randomly assigned to two levels of concentrate feeding (six goats per genotype per treatment) and fed for 90 days. The two concentrate feeding levels were C1 and C2, where goats were fed at 1% and 1.5% of their bodyweights, respectively. At the end of the study, all goats were slaughtered and samples were taken from the longissimus muscle for chemical composition analysis. The skins were weighed, preserved and processed into leather for physico-chemical analysis. The longissimus muscle of SS goats had higher (P < 0.05) fat content (7.01%) than Bati (6.05%) and HH (6.02%) goats. Feeding concentrate at 1.5% bodyweight increased carcass weights (P < 0.01), and increased the protein and fat contents of the longissimus muscle by ~5.4% and 3.5%, respectively. Similarly, goats under C2 feeding group had heavier skin than those under C1. However, Bati and HH goats produced 250 g more heavier leather than SS goats. Leathers made from skins of HH goats were thicker (1.56 mm) than those from Bati (1.32 mm) and SS goats (1.23 mm). Leathers from SS goats tended to have lower (P = 0.07) tear strength and higher (P = 0.05) fat content than those from Bati and HH goats. Goats fed C2 produced leathers with higher (P < 0.05) tear strength (51.6 N/mm) and fat content (6.2%) than those fed C1. In conclusion, the study revealed that the meat obtained from the three goat types had low to medium fat content that can meet the needs of diversified consumers. Moreover, they produced quality leather comparable to the quality standard set for good quality leather despite leathers from SS goats tending to have lower tear strength and higher fat content.
