Effect of Moringa leaf flavonoids on the production performance, immune system, and rumen fermentation of dairy cows

BACKGROUND

Unreasonable use of antibiotics in animals is a major concern and will remain so, thus affecting people's health. However, the application of plant extracts can better solve this problem.

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to study the effect of Moringa leaf flavonoids on the production performance, immunity, and rumen fermentation of dairy cows.

METHODS

Nine Holstein multiparous cows (average weight: 550 kg; days of lactation: 150 ± 6 days) were used in the experiment, using a 3 × 3 Latin square design. Cows were divided into three groups, each of which was supplemented with 0, 50, or 100 mg/body weight (BW) Moringa oleifera leaf flavonoids. Each experimental period consisted of three periods of 21 days, and the prefeeding period lasted 15 days.

RESULTS

Our results indicated that supplementation with Moringa leaf flavonoids increased the protein content and decreased the number of somatic cells in milk; had little effect on the biochemical indices of blood, the rumen fermentation, and serum biochemical indicators; and improved the activity of antioxidant enzymes, the antioxidant capacity, and immunity.

CONCLUSIONS

Addition of 50 mg/BW Moringa leaf flavonoids to cow enhanced the antioxidant and immunity capacity in dairy cows but did not affect physiological levels of common biochemical parameters in blood or fermentation parameters in rumen.

In vitro gas production in rumen fluid of buffalo as affected by urea-calcium mixture in high-quality feed block

This study aimed to determine the effect of urea-calcium sulphate mixture (U-cas) levels in high-quality feed block (HQFB) on ruminal digestibility, fermentation and gas kinetics in rumen fluid of swamp buffalo by using in vitro techniques. The treatments were seven levels of U-cas incorporated in HQFB at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18% and the experimental design was a completely randomized design. Gas production rate constants for the insoluble fraction, potential extent of gas and cumulative gas were linearly increased with increasing levels of U-cas in HQFB. The in vitro dry matter digestibility, in vitro organic matter digestibility, true digestibility and microbial mass were altered by treatments and were greatest at 18% U-cas supplementation. Concentrations of propionate were linearly increased with increasing levels of U-cas and was highest with U-cas supplementation at 18%. The NH3 -N concentration was highest when urea was added in the HQFB while NH3 -N concentration tended to be reduced with increasing level of U-cas. The findings suggest supplementation of 18% U-cas in HQFB improves kinetics of gas production, rumen fermentation, digestibility and microbial mass as well as controlling the rate of N degradation in the rumen of swamp buffalo.

Enhancing mulberry leaf meal with urea by pelleting to improve rumen fermentation in cattle

Four, ruminally fistulated crossbred (Brahman×native) beef cattle with initial body weight of 420±15 kg were randomly assigned according to a 4×4 Latin square design. The dietary treatments were mulberry leaf pellet (MUP) supplementation at 0, 200, 400 and 600 g/hd/d with rice straw fed to allow ad libitum intake. All steers were kept in individual pens and supplemented with concentrate at 5 g/kg of body weight daily. The experiment was 4 periods, and each lasted 21 d. During the first 14 d, all steers were fed their respective diets ad libitum and during the last 7 d, they were moved to metabolism crates for total urine and fecal collection. It was found that increasing MUP levels resulted in linearly increasing rice straw and total intakes (p<0.05). Ruminal temperature and pH were not significantly affected by MUP supplementation while NH3-N concentration was increased (p<0.05) and maintained at a high level (18.5 mg/dl) with supplementation of MUP at 600 g/hd/d. Similarly, viable total bacteria in the rumen and cellulolytic bacteria were enriched by MUP supplementation at 600 g/hd/d. However, the rumen microbial diversity determined with a PCR-DGGE technique showed similar methanogenic diversity between treatments and sampling times and were similar at a 69% genetic relationship as determined by a UPGMA method. Based on this study, it could be concluded that supplementation of MUP at 600 g/hd/d improved DM intake, ruminal NH3-N, and cellulolytic bacteria thus iimproving rumen ecology in beef cattle fed with rice straw.
