Current View on Genetic Relationships within the Bunyamwera Serological Group

The Bunyamwera serological group includes a number of geographically widespread viruses that are related but not identical and have serological cross-reactivity. As the first group members were obtained in the pre-sequencing era, their classifications (group attribution, species differentiation) were originally based on serological reactions. At the same time, the accuracy of the typing in each case depended on the variety of viruses that the researcher had as a comparison panel. With the advent of sequencing techniques, it has become customary to use identity thresholds (nucleotide or amino acid composition) as demarcation criteria for the interspecific differentiation of viral species. Identity thresholds are determined by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) and are regularly reviewed. Similar criteria were established for the Orthobunyavirus genus, which includes members of the Bunyamwera serological group. On the basis of these criteria, the species attributions of some members of the serological group need to be clarified. For this purpose, we analyzed sequences (available in NCBI GenBank) of viruses belonging to the Bunyamwera serological group in order to clarify their phylogenetic positions on the basis of the current demarcation criteria established by the ICTV.

The molecular biology of nairoviruses, an emerging group of tick-borne arboviruses

The nairoviruses are a rapidly emerging group of tick-borne bunyaviruses that includes pathogens of humans (Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus [CCHFV]) and livestock (Nairobi sheep disease virus [NSDV], also known as Ganjam virus), as well as a large number of viruses for which the normal vertebrate host has not been established. Studies on this group of viruses have been fairly limited, not least because CCHFV is a BSL4 human pathogen, restricting the number of labs able to study the live virus, while NSDV, although highly pathogenic in naive animals, is not seen as a threat in developed countries, making it a low priority. Nevertheless, recent years have seen significant progress in our understanding of the biology of these viruses, particularly that of CCHFV, and this article seeks to draw together our existing knowledge to generate an overall picture of their molecular biology, underlining areas of particular ignorance for future studies.

Molecular survey for mosquito-transmitted viruses: detection of Tensaw virus in north central Florida mosquito populations

A bunyavirus surveillance was performed in 2,600 pools consisting of 45,728 mosquitoes collected in north-central Florida from May 2006 to April 2007. Fifteen mosquito pools were found to be virus-positive from the total 2,600 mosquito pools tested (0.6% infection rate), which resulted in a minimum infection rate of 0.33 per 1,000 mosquitoes. Sequence data identified the virus to be Tensaw virus, a member of the Bunyaviridae family. All the virus-positive samples were obtained from pools collected from May to October 2006, in 3 of the 4 major locations studied, revealing the presence of Tensaw virus in north-central Florida mosquito populations in 2006.
